Napoleon (2023)

A great film

I thought that after all the carping and criticism that this was a great film. We should not forget the Napoleon was a military genius and that his tactics are studied by historians and military students.

Josephine is brilliantly portrayed and highlighted the complexity of napoleon's character.

It's such a vast subject that a 2 hour can not possibly do him justice.

I enjoyed the first series because it followed a story with a plot ( sort of) but series 2 is a complete mystery to me. I've re watched the first three episodes but I still don't get what that's all about.

The Umbrella Academy (2019–2024)

It started as bizarre and quirky and as such it drew you in, sort of compelling. Series 2 sort of carries on in the same vain and I lived in hope that it might emulate series 1. But the 3rd instalment is utter bilge. My benchmark is how soon I reach for the iPad and the IMDB site🤣 in this case it was minutes NO seconds 😢

I usually measure the entertainment value of a product by how easily I get distracted. Facebook, putting the kettle on or even pushing the hoover about, it's possibly not a bad story or poorly acted but it was just so un-engaging.

What a gem, among all the utter garbage on subscription tv it is such a pleasure to come across something original, engrossing and unique. It's sometimes difficult to believe that animation could get this good.

Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023)

I enjoyed the first series but the second one was far too wordy and full of silly introspection. It had its moments when it did the "Star Trek" thing and it was watchable and good but that was hidden in a lot of unfollowable rubbish.

Dopesick (2021)

Compelling

This series came very highly recommended so when I was looking for inspiration I put it on...the rest is history.

It is quiet and understated and so slow as to be almost turgid BUT wow it's so desperate because it's true.

If you read some of the heartfelt reviews from ordinary people whose lives were destroyed you will get why it's so well received.

Most series's fade and disappoint as time goes by but not Ozark. It's gripping and interesting to such an extent that I cannot wait for the next episode.

I don't know what the budget for this film was but there were too many silly inaccuracies for me to ignore. Wrong tyres, sock garters, champagne glasses etc please get these irritating facts right.

This is a very plausible and different view of history, the pragmatic comments made by the PM in a very difficult situation are illuminating.

It's well played and the settings seem authentic but it lacks atmosphere it's just too 21 century.

I must have missed something along the way because even at the end a lot just did not make sense. The first series was captivating and original but the script writer have gone overboard adding complexity.

By halfway through series 2 this interesting production had become laughable , dramas based on the truth should be carful not to stray to far as the depth of ignorance in the world won't diminish.

This series was billed as like GOT but in my opinion it most certainly was not. It seemed confused and bitty without direction. I haven't read the books but I'm not sure I will want to now.

Dune (2021)

It's a long time since I read the book after listening to a review of the original Dune and I loved the book and the film.

Anticipating this film has driven me to distraction and wow was it worth the wait.

From the opening sequence to the final credit I was spell bound.

This series might get off to a steady start but it's worth persisting with. Sometimes it seems a bit gun crazy but when faced with an alien invasion who knows! I hope we get another series.

What can I say other than it was predictable but watchable. Don't go looking for depth and meaningful dialogue but you get what you expect.

Not many films make me laugh out loud but this one did.

Meryl Streep is wonderfully cast as the main character ( Who I believe she can sing very well) and the supporting actors are all very good.

This could have been a good funny film but it was let down buy a terrible script and strange editing. The other issue is that many of the cultural references are so US focused that anyone outside that country would fail to get the humour...ergo a failure.

Gentle film

What a wonderful gentle film that tells an interesting story about events in a quite Suffolk village that changed the history of England. A perfect cast do a fantastic job of portraying a pre war sense of impending doom and uncertainty amid the wonderful east Anglian countryside. Worth anyone's time.

It's great to see a film that's different and interesting. The move between Korean, English and sub titles is a bit challenging but the film trips along and the action is great.
