House of the Dragon (2022)
Aspect ratio
I recently watched a show called hOuSe Of ThE dRaGoN that had a 2:1 aspect ratio and it was extremely frustrating. The format made it difficult to fully immerse myself in the content as the picture felt cramped and the visual elements were not as impactful as they could have been. Instead of feeling like I was fully transported into the world of the show, I was constantly aware of the aspect ratio and how it was affecting my viewing experience.
One of the most frustrating aspects of the 2:1 aspect ratio was how it affected the way the characters and settings were portrayed on screen. The horizontal field of view felt constricted, and it was difficult to get a sense of the scale and scope of the world. This was especially noticeable in scenes where the characters were moving through large, open spaces. The cramped aspect ratio made these scenes feel claustrophobic and uninviting, rather than expansive and immersive.
In addition to the visual limitations of the aspect ratio, I also found that it affected the way I was able to connect with the characters. Close-up shots of the actors' faces felt cramped, and it was difficult to see the subtle facial expressions and emotions that are so crucial to understanding the characters. This made it harder to become fully invested in their stories and to care about what was happening to them.
Overall, the aspect ratio negatively impacted my viewing experience and I would not recommend this show to others. While the story and acting were good, the 2:1 aspect ratio was a major distraction and detracted from the overall enjoyment of the show. I would hope that in future productions, the creators and producers will consider how the aspect ratio can enhance or detract from the viewing experience and make a more thoughtful decision when choosing the format.
Love, Death & Robots: Suits (2019)
Don't think so
No real story, just the most typical American boom boom, bang bang.
Primal Survivor (2016)
The only reason I am not giving this a solid score..
..is because in the later seasons, whoever wrote this series started to completely miss the point of the show. The exciting part was watching the natives teach him, see how they live, see how they survive. I want to see more of that. As the show goes on, the whole thing just becomes centred around him, which is a dumbed down and boring version of the absolute brilliance this show once was. Whoever made that decision should be fired. This series is now dead to me.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
It's really hard finding good horror films..
..but this is one of them.
Film is not the medium for horror in my opinion. Games are. Books are. Most directors fail to even scratch the most outer itch of what makes horror good horror.
This film is very experimental, but that is what makes it so good. It is real, it is engaging. For the non-engaging medium that film is in this regard, this is some of the best I have seen.
The Favourite (2018)
Masterpiece
Lanthimos has done it again. The absurdity of the acting combined with the genius direction, unusual cinematography and the suspense of the constant power play between the two women makes this film one of the only watchable additions to the heritage film genre.
