The Batman (2022)
Heartless, soulless, and uncreative
So I just saw the Bat-cat-man-boy movie last night and it was a hilarious waste of three hours of my life. Right off the bat cat we aren't given a reason to care about anything or anyone. No characters were developed, no relationships established. Not a single meaningful conversation was had between these people who are facing a life-threatening criminal? Everyone's motivations were either stupid or uncommunicated. It pains me to say catwoman was pointless but it's okay because literally every one was. You could've made a "noir" movie without the bat if you wanted to do so very badly. The coloring was weird, there were so many missed opportunities for interesting shots. The soundtrack was ugly (I can't believe they dragged Kurt Cobain into this). The movie took itself too seriously to the point where it felt like a parody of itself. I can go into details but I'm just tired at this point. It was a god awful joke.
Paul Dano did his best with what he had and his acting was the only thing that was acceptable in this movie. All the characters were non-characters, the plot was dumb and it...it didn't need batman to happen (idk how to explain this without spoiling). Robert Pattinson was not given much to work with but GOD was he a snooze. The waste of Colin Farell is CRIMINAL, if you'll hire an actor and put him in a fat suit to make him unrecognizable...just hire a fat actor. What's the point? The penguin was pointless, the knock-off God father guys were pointless, the cat's subplot was STUPID and it did nothing for the main plot (every time she almost does something that has any semblance of impact she is stopped to the point where you could remove her entirely from the movie and nothing will change).
Cat and bat chemistry is forced to the point where seeing them kiss made me genuinely uncomfortable. This movie was not written...idk how to explain this, but it felt like they had a vague idea of what they were going for and then just started filming. THERES NO DIALOGUE. The pacing is strange; it is extremely slow and then it becomes abrupt, idk how relatable the following experience is but it felt much like landing on camelback. The communication of information in a THREE HOUR LONG MOVIE is too direct as if they didn't have time to shove in all the nothing they wanted to say.
It was heartless, soulless, and uncreative. It felt like none of the people making it actually cared at all.
Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj (2018)
A pretty excellent version of what it is
It was always clear in Hasan Minhaj's appearances on The Daily Show, in his comedy specials and even in interviews that he has a certain vision and a message that he means to send.
It always seemed like he cared about informing viewers in different aspects of politics, immigrant culture, etc. in the funniest way possible
This show is just that but with a bigger budget and more screen time. If you enjoyed his work before, you'll LOVE this. If you didn't, check it out anyway, what do you have to lose.
