FUBAR (2023)
Very solid entertainment
I thoroughly enjoyed this series! Arnold Schwarzenegger is amazingly funny in this, and there's an assortment of colourful side characters that all really add to the fun. The family dynamics of the actual family here but also CIA team family are a joy to watch.
But I particularly enjoyed the villain, too. I hadn't seen the actor in anything else before but he has an amazing presence and voice and managed to not make the character feel cartoonish, despite his over-the-top evil plan and the fact that this is largely a comedy anyway. You could take him seriously which really held together the plot which was a bit illogical and stupid sometimes. Overall I can definitely recommend this for a weekend-bingewatch.
Operation Finale (2018)
Worth a watch
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. That's mostly thanks to Oscar Isaac and Ben Kingsley who did a phenomenal job as always and carried the whole movie.
Valkyrie (2008)
A good movie that Stauffenberg deserves
Not a flawless film, but nevertheless a very exciting, unusual, important one. The biggest mistake in my opinion is depicting Hitler as a lifeless weak character because it reduces the danger of him as a "villain".
Der Überläufer (2020)
Waste of production effort
I love movies set in WW2 but this was really incredibly bad. The main actor has the charisma of a potato bag, and he doesn't get across the difficult inner conflict and emotions of the situation at all. And the love story! God. Never have I seen a less believable love story in all my life. Though the female lead is still the only character with a bit of interest, all the others are flat and cartoonish. Not to be recommended unless you just want to spend a few hours in early 20st century Europe, cause the costumes and sets are nice to look at nonetheless.
Agora (2009)
Wonderful, cannot recommend it enough
This is an extremely underrated movie. It doesn't even feel like a historical movie, but rather a movie that is fully immersed in history; as if someone traveled back in time in order to film this movie in real 4th century Alexandria. At the same time, it's a tribute to astronomy and science as a whole. Rachel Weisz does an amazing job, so do Oscar Isaac and Max Minghella. The set design and costumes are out of this world. The idea to include the story of a slave was extremely smart, as it also shows why so many people converted to Christianity in the first place. Which is why, even though the Christians do terrible things in this movie, it never slips into black and white storytelling. In short, this is a masterpiece, possibly one of my new favorite movies.
Barbarians (2020)
Worth it for the Latin alone
A solid and entertaining series, if a bit theatrical at times and not too focused on historical accuracy. The best part are definitely the Romans and their beautiful Latin, making up for authenticity it lacks in other places and perfectly driving home the difference in culture between the two parties. I truly hope that if there is a second season, it will still feature the Romans prominently; despite the fact that their dominion lies in the past now. Because I highly doubt the series would manage to stay as interesting and exciting without them and their amazing dynamic with the so-called barbarians and their new leader.
