Barbie (2023)
Unexpectedly good!
I was be able to attend the pre premiere of this movie and I have to say this movie was unexpectetly good and this comes from a non Barbie fan. Barbie is the role Robbie was clearly born to play. Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu were incredible too and actually the whole cast of this movie shines ! Barbie is a brilliantly executed, incredibly fun, brightly colored, completely logical feminist statement that should be remembered come awards season. Ultimately, Barbie is so many things: a stereotype, a toy, an idea; a vessel of imagination; a cultural relic. But in Gerwig's trusted hands, this is Barbie like you've never seen her before.
Fast X (2023)
The franchise is getting better again!
Fast X is the best Fast and Furious since Furious 7. Jason Momoa is incredible and really makes this movie for what it is. And yeah, some parts were a bit fiction, but in f9 they went to space. In Furious 7 they jumped from building to building, so I really don't mind. I had a fantastic time in the theater. One of the greatest movies of the franchise. It had everything. It had comedy that hit at the right point, emotional at each corner and it always kept you on your toes with the action that it had. ( also great cars as always). Excellent, action packed plus the mid credit scene brought me shock (in a good way though). This is exactly what we expected to get, can't wait for the next one.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
One of the best MCU movies since Endgame/No Way Home!
Very brief recap: after Endgame, the Guardians bought Knowhere from the Collector. Kraglin (Sean Gunn) has been training Cosmo the Spacedog (Maria Bakalova) while practicing with Yondu's whistling arrow. Nebula (Karen Gillan), Groot (Vin Diesel), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Drax (Dave Bautista), and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) - revealed to be Peter's half-sister in the Holiday Special - have been carrying out renovations, while Peter (Chris Pratt) spends his days listening to music and drowning his sorrows, still mourning the loss of Gamora. Yes, she's still alive thanks to past time-travel shenanigans, but she's not the woman he loved.
In a charming opening sequence, Rocket strolls around the city listening to Radiohead's 'Creep' - a song with poignant, albeit obvious links to his character with lyrics like, 'I want a perfect body, I want a perfect soul.' Suddenly, he's speared by a Super-Saiyan blur: it's Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), an ultra-powerful "effigy" of the Sovereign ordered to recover the "squirrel" for the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), a super-powered madman hellbent on creating the "perfect species."
Suffice to say, things don't go to plan for Adam or the Guardians, and it puts them on a collision course with the High Evolutionary in order to save Rocket's life. Of course, they'll need Gamora's help along the way.
Marvel movies have been rightfully slapped with memes and mockery about their tropes, like undercutting emotional moments with feeble, "so, that just happened" attempts at humor - but Guardians 3 is an exception, mostly on account of it actually being funny. The laughs don't feel cheap, and quips that don't connect aren't left to linger. Gunn also indulges his more macabre sensibilities, mining giggles from all sorts of wanton carnage.
The cast has never been better: Pratt and Saldana's chemistry is sparkly and moving, Klementieff and Bautista remain the trilogy's best pairing, and Gillan's Nebula is perfectly pitched, especially after rocky beginnings. Cooper, once again, completely disappears into Rocket, and in years to come it'll be revered as one of the best voice performances we've ever had.
Rocket has been at the forefront of the marketing, for good reason. We won't spoil anything, but we'll say this: he may have the most heartbreaking origin story in the MCU - as Nebula says, it's "worse than what Thanos did to her." Any and all scenes that flashback to his past are among the most emotionally potent, overwhelming moments in the film; there's cruelty on display, but the brutality isn't manipulative.
Some may feel the rest of the movie is a bit messy. It's the longest movie in the trilogy at two-and-a-half hours, but for my money, there wasn't a single bum note, thanks to character being at the core of all of Gunn's storytelling. The runtime and narrative hopscotching are clearly structured to give everyone their moment to shine, but they all work. It's all satisfying and, importantly, true to who they are, where they've been, and where they're going.
John Murphy is on composer duties this time, taking over from Tyler Bates. While there's nothing quite on the same goosebump-raising caliber as 'Groot Spores', 'Dad', or even their main theme, it's a strong score that compliments another impeccable soundtrack. We'll be humming to 'Dog Days Are Over' all day.
A triumphant, beautiful closer for a team we're devastated to lose, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is one of the best MCU movies ever made.
Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre (2023)
Funny, Good action and enjoyable! Worth The Wait
Another of Ritchie's frequent collaborators back on board here is Jason Statham, continuing to effortlessly lean into his brand of dry charm as the spectacularly named Orson Fortune, a no-nonsense spy who is often tapped by the British government for the type of operations they would rather keep quiet from the officials. Under the direction of Nathan Jasmine (Cary Elwes), an MI6 operative who seems to always stay calm regardless of the danger he (or his team) are placed in, Fortune is assigned to infiltrate the selling of a convenient narrative macguffin from falling into the wrong hands, lest their be global destruction on his hands; here the macguffin is something known as "The Handle", and the wrong hands would be that of eccentric billionaire Greg Simmonds (a fabulously cheeky Hugh Grant), an arms dealer looking to sell it for a few more billion to Ukrainian terrorists.
In terms of Ritchie's back catalogue, Operation Fortune isn't quite as wicked or gritty as Snatch, RocknRolla or The Gentlemen, but it does have his flair for global aesthetics and a well-oiled ensemble who all commit thoroughly to their archetypal characters that they each elevate off the page; Ritchie co-writing said pages with frequent collaborators Ivan Atkinson (The Gentlemen) and Marn Davies (Wrath of Man).
Overall this was an enjoyable movies and it was worth the wait!
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
The Way Of Water was worth the wait!
Features some of the most incredible spectacle ever created by the absolute master of precise parallel action... The only thing more astonishing than anything in The Way of Water is that Cameron will probably, somehow, top it. Like the first film, Avatar 2 is a flourish of A++ production values and stunning state-of-the-art VFX wrapped around a B-movie action melodrama. It's the epitome of post-content cinema where story comes second to spectacle and appeal to basic emotions. Avatar: The Way of Water is a cinematic spectacle that should be seen on the big screen at least once. Those who loved the original will see their years-long patience rewarded plentifully.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Way better than expected!
I walked in thinking that without Chadwick Boseman that this movie would fill empty. I was right but they wrote and portrayed a story about when death happens, it does leave a 'hole' so to speak. Very impressed with all the characters and their arcs and found myself rooting for the anti hero Namor. This movie does an amazing job at tears, shocks and world building. They knew they couldn't do this movie better than the first because of Chadwick's death, but they produced a solid movie. Will for sure watch a second time in the movie theater. Its hard to continue without Chadwick Boseman, but the movie does justice to his character and the ending is promising for the future.
Black Adam (2022)
Unexpectedly Good!
Just came out of the theatres and I must admit I had low expectations coming in, but it was pleasantly surprised! This movie had great action and dope visuals. I found the entire cast charming and loveable and I had a blast watching them. I even laughed at most of the jokes. There were a few cheesy moments but overall I definitely enjoyed this film. Also the costume design was fantastic! Overall Great movie!, I would definitely recommend and I'll even buy it when it comes out on blu ray. Super heroes and villains are great, Gotta admit sometimes the CGI was a bit too much but still overall I would watch it again for sure!
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022)
Even for the non anime fan or for the non Cyberpunk fan an fantastic anime series!
To start the review, this series is based on the controversial video game from CD Projekt, Cyberpunk 2077. Luckily, you don't need to know anything about the game's universe to dive right into Edgerunners. The anime follows a young man named David, who possesses quite the powerful tech but pays a heavy price in its acquisition. David might not break the mold when it comes to your typical anime protagonist, but he works well as an avatar for the viewers, who could easily see themselves in his shoes, even though those shoes are typically moving at light speed thanks to the new spine implanted in his back.
I am not an anime person and never liked anime but I am a fan of the game and i have to make an exception for this one! Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is hands down a Netflix anime original that screams for your attention and is easily one of the best productions that the streaming service has presented. Fan of anime/game or not, Edgerunners is well worth your time.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
MOVIE OF THE YEAR 2022, BEST SEQEL EVER
This movie was fantastic. It included the nostalgia of the original but made an entirely different feel at the same time. I don't like all the CGI these days, and this movie 'felt' like there was none. I need to know how they did it because it looked like these actors were really flying. It's a must see for the theater as the sounds of the jets were absolutely thrilling. Goosebumps. Tom may be an odd duck (he might even think he's a duck for all I know) but man - he can make fantastic movies. I can't say enough. Go see it. I'm serious - like NOW. Are you still reading this? GO SEE IT!
