The Predator (2018)
Should have been direct to DVD
Let me start by saying that I'm a huge fan of the franchise. I even liked Predators and the AVP movies (although none are as good as Predator 1 and 2).
But this movie was bad on a whole other level. Seriously. I can't think of 1 positive thing to say about it. The problem was the basic premise, the terrible disjointed script, and the forced comedy.
If I had paid to see this I would have asked for my money back; it's that bad.
Whoever green lit this for $60 million dollars should be fired.
Black Mirror: Nosedive (2016)
Not even that far off from the present
Season 3 really got an upgrade over previous seasons. It shows in the scripts and production values.
Wow, watching this episode, I can't help but feel like this isn't that far off from the ridiculousness that is present day social media. Sure, it was presented in a sterile, picture-perfect environment, but peel back the layers and what it tells us about ourselves is eeriely accurate.
Society today seems to embrace and even reward being up on all the latest celebrity gossip, the Kardashians, "everyone look at me me me" selfies, and "because I'm certain you care what I ate for lunch today". Many people put more importance on being able to boast having 10,000 shallow "friends" than a handful of truly meaningful ones.
This Black Mirror episode is really a reflection into many of our own mirrors. Those that buy into this meaningless rat race of an existance know this is the truth. Those who this doesn't apply to should be thankful; there's hope for you yet as a valuable member of humanity.
Unlike the characters in the episode, we each have a choice as to our level of participation. Next time you walk down the street or go to Starbucks, get your face out of your phone and interact with your fellow man on a genuinely human level. You'll be surprised at how much more positive you'll feel.
Prisoner X (2016)
A notch or 2 above your typical SyFy channel original movie
The best way to describe this movie would be if you took an average episode of The Outer Limits TV series (1995–2002) or the remade Twilight Zone TV series (1985–1989, 2002-2003), and extended it to a 2- hour format.
Sometimes time-travel movies are overly convoluted as a way to come off as original or smart, but Prisoner X handles it in a very straightforward manner.
The actors are unknown, but the majority do a good job. The story is creative, and the budget is high enough to provide believable sets and decent props without looking like something you'd see on MST3K.
Some of the scenes felt rushed, so better editing plus cutting out unnecessary side stories would have allowed other scenes to be extended.
You'll be disappointed if you expect a Michael Bay pew-pew fest or a Hollywood action/thriller film. It's definitely a notch or 2 above a typical SyFy channel original movie though.
Overall, Prisoner X is a good way to kill a few hours of boredom.
