The Bob's Burgers Movie (2022)
8/10
Platform: Hulu
Runtime: 1h 42m PG - 13
The Belcher's try to save their restaurant as sinkhole and a dead body pops up in front of it, whilst the kids try to solve a mystery that could save their family's restaurant. I've seen every episode of Bob's Burgers, all 12 seasons worth and I loved every minute of it. Now the movie doesn't disappoint. The humor is on point, the characters are quirky as ever and there a couple musical numbers in the film which are so entertaining. The story strays away the normal Bob's Burgers forte, but it is interesting. The plot keeps pace and keeps me engaged.
The movie does move slow at first, but then picks up. Tina and Bob Belcher are entertaining, but Tina, Louise and Gene are the real stars of the film and shine through their curiosity that gets them into trouble throughout the movie. The Belcher's are always struggling to make ends meet, but they always come together as a family and end up shining in the end and that's such a draw for me. My only gripe is the movie takes place in the same basic locations and and movie is slow at times. But other than that the movie is very entertaining.
Bottom Line: If you never watched a Bob's Burgers episode, you can get right into this film and be entertained. Although it's a kid's cartoon, there are inuendo's in the film which adults will only get.
Bad Hair (2020)
Music Stars are a Plus
Bad Hair stars Elle Loraine as Anna Bludso. It's 1989 and Anna works at a music - television studio. She gets a weave to improve her image and try to get a promotion. Anna goes to an exclusive salon, Virgie's, to get a weave put it. She gets her weave sewn in and from there strange things start to happen.
Supporting cast include Vanessa Williams, Kelly Rowland, Usher, Jay Pharaoh, Blair Underwood and James Van Der Beek. Anna's hair sends her into a nightmare and us responsible for deaths. The film gets the 1989 vibe on point with everything from the clothes to the music and so on. The movie was enjoyable with it's impressive cast, decent story and plot. The special effects were lacking in some parts but I can overlook that because it's a minor nag. This movie is marked as horror but has comedic elements to it and that lightens the mood and doesn't make this movie that scary at all.
Bottom Line:. 80's MTV nostalgia on deck with this horror - comedy film. Big name music stars help the film shine a little. The acting is enjoyable, but not great. I enjoyed the 80's theme more than the main plot of the film.
Moon Knight (2022)
Not What I Expected
Moon Knight stars Oscar Isaac as Steven Grant, Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow and Maya Calamawy as Layla El - Faouly. The series follows Steven Grant who finds out he is granted the powers of the Egyptian Moon God Khonshu. He soon discovers the powers can be a blessing and a curse. Steven battles something he doesn't understand as he sleeps chained to a bed because he would frequently wake up in a different place if he doesn't otherwise. He battles an avatar, Marc, that is existing in reflections. The avatar does Khonshu's bidding by getting rid of evil in the world. He wakes up in different parts of the world and is put in hair raising situations that test his abilities. If you don't pay attention the series will lose you as the series is all over the place.
He also battles Arthur Harrow who is after a golden scarab that Steven is in possession of. The story is unique and the plot moves along nicely. The production values of this Marvel property are as usual, high. The visuals are eye candy don't falter at all. From Budapest to Egypt and beyond the exotic locations are a joy to see. I must talk about the music which is composed by Hesham Nazih which fits perfectly into the Egyptian theme that is through out Moon Knight. He does an awesome job of capturing the sounds of ancient Egypt while maintaining a contempary sound. From the streets to rooftops and music never disappoints.
Even though this series is all over the place meaning that situations switch quite frequently and are sometimes confusing , I thoroughly enjoyed the series filled with exotic locations that pull you in its universe, the writing is good and the characters are interesting and connect very well with each other.
Bottom Line: This Marvel property has potential and it's off to a good start. Oscar Isaac kills it as duel characters. It's a fun ride through an exotic backdrop. But the story just needs to be more tightened up as not to confuse the viewer.
Yip Man 4 (2019)
Donnie Yen is awesome!!
Ip Man 4 stars martial arts mega star Donnie Yen of films like Blade 2, Hero and Star Wars Rogue One and is directed by Wilson Yip. Ip Man 4 follows the previous 3 films, which also star Donnie Yen, as Bruce Lee's mentor who travels to America. Ip Man is looking for schooling for his son and to try to calm the martial arts masters down in San Francisco because his student, Bruce Lee, has opened a Wing Chun School.
Through events trying to get his son into an America school, Ip Man is pulled into chaos. The fight scenes are fire and are so fun to watch especially when Bruce Lee comes on screen. Even though fights are few, the story is consistent and the plot is great. Through the 1 hour and 45 minute run time, I found myself on the edge of my seat and going through a roller-coaster of emotions, from anxious to sad to down right angry.
Where it fails in some areas is the acting is not that great for some of the actors and is laughable. There is racism in the movie and it is overplayed. Those are my only gripes.
I'm closing Ip Man 4, although has flaws, the story, plot and fight scenes carry it along and there is a satisfying close to a great franchise.
Van Helsing (2016)
Overall Good
This series is about the vampire hunter Vanessa Van Helsing and fighting vampires in a post apocalyptic world. I had high hopes for this series. Overall it's good. Story and character development move along pretty well. Some of the acting is lack luster, but what carries the series is definitely the fight scenes. Brutal, visceral and well choreographed. Time travel elements make it interesting, Dracula (In spirit) makes an appearance. What was disappointing was the absence of the main character for almost 2 seasons and the series finale was👎. It's 5 seasons long and sometimes I lose interest. But the fights really do make the series. Watch with caution. 👀
F Is for Family (2015)
Ha!
This Netflix original follows a family in the 1970's. They experience family problems, fights, infedility, sexual frustration. The 5 season Netflix original animation series is voiced by powerhouses Laura Dern, Bill Burr, Justin Long and Debi Derryberry just to name a few. It is very much adult themed throughout every episode so NO KIDS watching. The father, Frank, is constantly at odds with his co-workers and family over various issues and it's hilarious to see him blow up then try to fix the problems he caused.. He hates his job,his wife is a nag , his son is rebellious, and his daughter tries too hard. Through all that Frank eventually manages to come out shining but not before he almost loses his marriage and his family. This series kept me laughing at every turn, the story flowed good throughout and I loved the 1970's retro setting for the series. Although I would if the series creators explored the 1970's more. If you love "Adult Animation" and don't mind raunchy comedy, then by all means, dive in.
Narcos (2015)
Outstanding
I love crime series. Especially true ones. This follows the rise of Pablo Escobar to power in Columbia and the agents tasked with taking him down. It stars Pedro Pascal and Boyd Holbrook as DEA Agents Javier Pena and Steve Murphy. Modeled after the real people. And Wagner Moira as Pablo Escobar. It shows how vicious Pablo was through the years but how the country of Columbia loved him almost to the end. Pablo Escobar was a drug kingpin and will do anything to hold his empire together. He is constantly on the move through the series from the DEA Agents and outsmarts them. On the surface the acting is top notch, the story is good, but could use some finassing in certain areas like I would like to know more of how he came to be what he is. It briefly touches on it with interactions with his father but that's about it. I wanted more detail on cartel operations. It runs 3 seasons on Netflix and the twists and turns are at every corner and keeps me enthralled with each episode. I wish there more seasons. Sadly it ended too soon. But they have a spinoff series, Narcos Mexico, and I will be watching this. If you like a true - crime series with its own spin and then some with wild action, great story and surprises then Narcos is for you.
Grace and Frankie (2015)
Just wow!
This series follows 2 married couples. It stars Jane Fonda, Lilly Tomlin, Sam Waterson and Martin Sheen. Jane Fonda and Martin Sheen play Grace and Robert and Lilly Tomlin and Sam Waterson play Frankie and Sol. Robert and Sol end up cheating on their wives with each other. The couples get divorced and the guys end up marrying and the girls end up living together. Each episode us filled with relatable comedy that is a ball to watch. Each couple has adult kids who get involved in their parents shenanigans. It's heart warming, touching and downright but gusting laughter to watch the situations they get themselves into. The 4 main veterans of the series bring everything together with their wit and charm. The story is awesome, the characters evolve with their situations over the 7 season run on Netflix. If you want something that is down to earth and will make you laugh whole heartedly then this is for you.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
Let down😳
I am a big fan of the franchise, but this disappointed me alot. The movie picks up 40 years after the original. Leatherface has not been caught and Sally Hardesty is a recluse. It updates the franchise by interweaving the social media theme with influencers. The story is very weak and leaves alot to be desired, the writing and acting is laughable the characters die too early. It is trying to be the new Halloween by having Leatherface still around after 40+ years of killing and old characters are trying to kill him. The gore is good, and Leatherface got alot smarter over the years. He was dumb as toast in the first movie. Overall if your looking for something to fill your time with some laughs, this is it. This had potential and they missed the mark. Leatherface the movie was better and that was not that good either.
Ozark (2017)
Ruth makes the series!!
This is about a financial advisor who gets caught up in his former business partners wrongdoing with the cartel and has to move to the Ozarks to launder money for them. It stars Jason Bateman and Laura Kinney, who play Marty and Wendy Byrd. They have 2 kids in the series, Jonah and Charlotte who also help the family business. The series is slow to start but once it gets going it doesn't stop with plenty of twists throughout the series from Netflix. Along the way they meet colorful characters which make their life very difficult in one way or another. Ruth Langmore is as off kilter as they come. She is sweet bad kind but will shoot you in the face real quick if you cross her. She helps Marty launder money, helps cover up murder and gets involved in selling drugs. Ruth holds any scene she is in and keeps me wanting more. I wish there was more back story for the cartel, that is one place the series falls short along with the bosses seem weak. Wendy's father is played by Richard Thomas is amazing in the role and keeps me on the edge of my seat but sadly he is only in it for a few episodes or so. Overall the series has great acting by the whole cast, with interesting character arcs. It is dark but has heart-warming moments throughout but then rips you down into the abyss once you comfortable. The story is awesome and I would definitely re watch this series again.
