Southern Hospitality (2022)
Great reality show
I'm actually shocked at the other low reviews on here.
I found this show to be on par with any of the other millennial/zillennial counterparts and equally as entertaining and fulfilling. I'm no slouch at reality tv - been watching Bravo and its many hits for years. The Real Housewives, Vanderpump, Winterhouse and Summerhouse, all the Southern Charms, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed the over the top personalities and naive over ambitious young cast who are all in their own rights quite narcissistic. I don't feel it's a fair assessment to say this show 'lacks substance'. It's in line with the age demographic and reality that these kids face - gender + sexuality exploration, dating, making life choices with regards to further education vs climbing the ladder in the workplace, addiction, mental health, body image, etc. Also, what 'substance' is there ever really to a scripted 'reality' tv show? If viewers are looking for riveting, socioeconomical, political and thought provoking programming, perhaps another genre or other tv station would
better serve?
My only real criticism would be of Leva herself. After watching her for years on SC, she really made sure to present herself as very controlled 'business woman' when in fact she very often loses her cool and is inappropriate to say the least. Just a convenient edit/character on the launch of her show. This seemed very inauthentic and not in line with her portrayal for years on SC....she's generally mouthy, biased, unreasonable and out of line.
I recommend this show if you are a lover of the classic reality tv storyline - drama, glam, scandal and love triangles.
Vampyres (1974)
Audio Visual Violation
I love me a B horror flick till the end of days....however where this film goes wrong is the majority of the 'erotica' scenes consist of very animalistic and perverse mechanical and lifeless jabbing and mashing of tongues with wide harsh open mouth movements + gross sounds. Very clunky and abrasive. No fluidity or 'erotic' essence in the slightest. It really leaves one feeling like they've witnessed something debased and repugnant. Unsettling and unenjoyable. Brutish and rapey really. But only with the mouths and audio. All very strange. It's too bad because it has great potential - costumes, setting, storyline and even the acting isn't half bad.
If you can get past all of this, or it's your jam? You might find this film redeeming....
Sex Education (2019)
Growing up isn't easy
Not sure if it's the uptight + rigid way we are raised in North America as youth compare to Europe + the UK, but this series makes me yearn for adolescence as free and open as depicted in this series...
It's so hard being a youth, especially with real world + life things being so taboo and hidden. I love this series for it's unapologetic depiction of how much better off young people can be with connection, exploration and transparency on all things, especially sex, sexuality, gender and intimacy/vulnerability.
The character development and plot is actually really clever and well done. Even though I am well into adulthood (early 40's), I still enjoy the crap out of this show.
Highly recommend it.
Texicanas (2019)
I don't understand why this show only has a 5.3 rating...?
I am a reality TV show maven. And I don't like just any show. This series did not disappoint, to the degree where I am gutted there is no season 2...
It is the perfect start to what could be a strong brand just like the Real Housewives.
I hope it gets picked up again and we can see more of these Mexican/American sassy ladies!
Downhill (2020)
A little TOO real!
The acting was good.
The writing and story was not.
Most of this film was extremely uncomfortable to view because it was overtly realistic. Which is fine when there seems to be a point...a point where everything comes together and has purpose.
If not, that result is what happened with this movie which is simply an uncomfortable inside view of human relationship abs familial dysfunction.
The film was quite flat and had little redeeming points to it. I'm all for comedians doing serious films and I love a realistic movie that speaks to human behaviour and its many facets, however this one was just pointless.
