Trying to find a way in an isolated nature
26 November 2019
I liked this movie, I liked its way in telling the story. Yes, its tempo is slow but the story streams perfectly. Dialogues and acting are very successful. There is no exaggeration or "unnecessary emphasis". Both players, Boodi Kabbani as 'Tareq' and Janne Puustinen as 'Leevi' did well-done job. I slightly disturbed in some scenes (not in scenes with sexual content) when the camera moved too much. For example,, the camera was moving (like shaking) during the scene where two guys were swimming in the pond. I don't know whether it was necessary. Camera moves are usually preferred for horror scenes or for increasing the tension.

I liked the movie but I have some general critics on movies which place "gay issues" at the focus. Why do generally gay movies have to be shut in an isolated places? Far from people, creating a lonely planet have started to be a cliche. 'A Moment in the Reeds' repeats this cliche too, like 'on God's Own Country'. (Likewise directors may create another getto instead they wanted to demolish the walls??) There is also often a hidden sadness in the background and it causes a slow motion streaming. The balance between "drama" and "comedy" are missed on purpose. (That's why I liked more the movie 'Theo and Hugo' due to its tempo.) Gay style-movies also like giving too much priority to dialogues. In the sound structure, the audience listens to dialogues more than the other sounds. These dialogues are also mostly between two main characters. Soundtracks, sounds of city, or other people's dialogues are usually less. This makes movie less believable and less real!! Despite of my general critics, 'A Moment in the Reeds' was directed quite successfully and deserves to be watched!

What is missing in such a good TV Series?
10 November 2019
I liked watching episodes of Easy. I was very impressed from performance of some players in the series. Although I felt time to time a strong inspiration in some episodes and in some dialogues from Woody Allen's movie, I found the subjects and issues very interesting. Easy nutrishes our way of looking in a different way to a very common subjects that we live and helps earning new understanding. However the reason why I gave 6 points as my rating rather than a better point is that the stories are not well connected. The dialogues go really well but there is a rythm/tempo problem in streaming an episode. The story sometime gets really boring and sometime too slow or too self-oriented depction. The combination of dialogues are also sometime not well merged. Time to time I had big difficulty to keep my enthusiasm for watching the episode. I surely advise Easy for watching but I'd like to see more tempo in the show.

It must have been a short film not more than 15 minutes
10 January 2019
It is the first time that I am writting a negative critics in Imdb. I usually avoid of expressing my dislikes on movies because I know how hard is film making process. But this film really deserved my negative critics. I watched this movie upon some positive critics. I waited till the middle of the movie. Nothing changed! Firstly, the sound recording is so disturbing. It looks like a student took a video recorder and decided to shoot his term assigment for a short movie. What is it? Is it a romance? Is it a kind of sentimental questioning? Or is it a vacation movie with egzotic backgrund? It can't be none of them. Performance of the artists are so poor. The chosen artists look like fashion models gathered for summer apparels. This movie couldn't catch me. I have been very disappointed about my decision to watch! After movie, I said "It neans that everyone can be director if you got a video recorder and some contacts." (*) It can be freely broadcast in YouTube. But please as a short movie.

It starts with very interesting topic, a Bosnian boy left in the nature and was looked after by wolves. He was found and was cared by an orphanage in Serbia. Then the war starts and a boy, who is trying to learn to be human, questions what it is to be a human...Denis Muric who plays the Bosnian boy showed an unbelievable performance andVuk Rsumovic teaches all of us "how a great movie is directed"... All cast also do the best with their amazing acting. Must be watched.. mustn't be missed...

The Insult (2017)

Is it possible to extract art from the woe?
29 May 2018
Why do Lebanese movies leave us breathless? Or better question can be "why do movies from the Middle East / made by artists from the Middle East catch us so helplessly?" For years and years, for centuries and centuries, the soil of the Middle East has been harvested with beautiful sunshine and woes for every nation, every group, every society and every human on this soil. No need longer words, the movie 'The Insult' gives not the answer of why questions expecting for these woes but perfectly explains that the woes have been experienced equally, in the same manner, with the same style of tragedy for every human being in the Middle East. Is this movie for peace? More than this, it is for mutual understanding. Where is no empathy, there is no peace. The story evolves around a conflict between two men, one from Christian society of Lebanon and the other from Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon. The court case expands the story and brings the audience into a spiral labeled with "hate and revenge". The insult is an excellent movie, an excellent shot directed by Ziyad Duveyri. All players in the movie amaze us with their performances. But the biggest part of our thanks must be delivered to Ziad Doueiri and Joelle Touma, who wrote the script. We, the audience, have watched many movies, TV series where the plot happens in a court. It is surely not easy to write a scenario, a realistic scenario on a court case. The weight of dialogues, the order of words, and the stream of the case, all need a delicate equilibrium. Very few of scenarios can reach the excellent level in realizing this tough mission. As for the Insult, the pen in the hand of Ziad Doueiri and Joelle Touma suceeds this magic without having any difficulty. There is also another success in the movie, it is to be unpredictable. For the experienced audience, the satisfaction of watching movie has been lesser nowadays because we predict / guess what comes the next. The Insult does not give this comfort to its audiences and keeps the audiences every moment inside the chamber of sweet excitement to watch a movie. The Insult is a movie rightly deserves the statement "must be watched"!

Better Than Zeus
19 May 2018
As I started to watch "Asphalte" (~Macadam Stories), I was expecting to watch a good / standard festival style movie. It was in a suburb of a city in France. Usual style, usual narration. Till the striking scene, I thought like that. I don't want to give a spoiler. Then movie changed, so changed. I must say, Asphalte is one of the most creative, brand new style movie. The language of the director, Samuel Benchetrit is so so different and made me so impressed. The composition of the stories in the movie, the characters, the stream of the movie is unbelievable. I never imgained that I would like this movie so much. To see such a creative movies make one pleased, hopeful and excited about the future of making movie. All players / artists are definitely 5 stars. Their successes in their performance are definitely equal. In the end of the movie, you have found yourself as you were saying "Wauv, such movies can be made! Bravo!" Thanks to the whole team for such a great production!

An Impressive Movie
6 April 2018
I must confess this. Till the last 20 minutes I had some doubts about this movie. I was questioning some scenes and I was about to see this movie as an average try to make a good movie. But the last 20 minutes completes the whole movie perfectly and all my doubts were erased and I was totally wrong on my questioning. It is like a puzzle and the last big piece comes at the end. I found a piece of Fellini's festive language and Tarkovsky's mystery in the movie but it is totally a brand new approach, not an imitated way, contrarily very fresh approach. Very impressive movie, very impressive direction and performance of all artists. All I can say is just to thank to them. It must be watched!

We all are human being!
13 January 2018
"On the other side" is about a family broke up due to the war between Serbia and Crotia. Damaged family relations, passing / losing years -alone, desperate, agony, hate-, unforgettable past memories, waking up from the bed by trying to be persuaded in "life must go on" are all the pieces of this amazing movie. It is drama, yes it is a sad movie but it is not a movie trying to extract your heart. As if a friend of yours is talking on her story in a cafe, peacefully, wisely, without exaggeration, with all her pure heart. I loved Zrinko Ogresta's (Director) way of telling story in this movie. No push, no tricks, no trying to get help from music or sound effects... like a reading pages by an impressive book... Ksenija Marinkovic (playing Vesna, main character) is absolutely over all stars. Terrific performance, there is not one scene where her role gets down. Her balance in her performance is just great! For me, one of the best in "On the Other Side" is to show you that all we are human being, yes we can be a murderer, a war criminal, a victim, a son of a notorious father... in the end, we all need to clean from all our sins and expecting for a mercy. Some can get and some cannot... I heartedly advise this movie.

There is Freedom in the Air
5 January 2018
This is my first movie that I watched from Fatih Akin. Shame on me! I am deeply impressed his innocent language in telling the story of two boys and the other characters. Tschick (Goodbye Berlin) tells a very ordinary story around two teenagers with an amazing beautiful way. I think that the success of the movie is not trying to tell the story from an adult view, on the contrary, telling like a teenager who talks about what happened during the last summer. The tune between sadness and happiness is very balanced. I like movies that not trying to exploit / (ab)use audience's weak points and Tschick (Goodbye Berlin) is also not trying to do this and set the audience free. For me, the main outcome (if we need a message from every movie that we watched) is "to be yourself" and "to accept life and people around you as well as yourself". There are many upsetting around two boy characters but all are experienced not in a melodramatic way but very truthful way like all we experienced when we were young. Anand Batbileg (Tschick) and Tristan Göbel (Maik) play their role perfectly. As I was watching the movie, I have never thought on their performances as "Oh no it is too exaggerated way" or "they are short for the role". I like this movie. It is honest, cheerful, hopeful and very very sentimental. I like sentimental laughter. (*) Mylast note for the admin. It is not possible to write Fatih Akin's surname in its original way. In Turkish we have small "I" and this field doesn't accept it. His surname is not written with "i" but with small "I". You may need fixing this. Thank you!

Nuance
3 December 2016
It is a very good movie and I really like its tune and story. This is a movie on the the respect of music, musician and dedication of musician. Very balanced story knitted around music and perfect examples from Jewish Synagogue music. In the movie, there are no surprises, shocks, or unexpected scenes for whom likes movie with a "up and down stream". That's why the movie depicts its story perfectly. It creates a successful harmony between the music which becomes the bone of the story and the lives of musicians. I must confess that it is not my style of movie and music but I really liked it because it let me learn this harmony, understand the music and dedication. You can watch with your children also. Thank you to the whole crew and to the director.

A Wonderful Movie
26 June 2016
Every second of the movie was absolutely great! All the players' performances were amazing! But my special thanks to Itziar Aizpuru! We need such movies to understand how our ordinary lives are in fact full of poetic moments. As the movie is walking around love and family affairs gently, it perfectly awakes our feelings, our scars by life, by love, by losses. Without needing a hey-day or needing exaggeration, the movie tells the stories of ordinary people like a wonderful tale book.We love someone but we can love someone else just because it is the way of life. Love someone else does not mean always "to betray our lover"! Love is the most human character and the value of love sometime can be measured with the weekly flowers that we found at our door. What I can say, it is a great movie! Thanks to all team!

To be a Jew or not to be a Nazi-Jew
25 June 2016
When I read the first time a news on Jewish Nazi sympathizers in Israel, I thought that it was a bad joke. But it was true, unfortunately true. The movie is a kind of visual debate on that fact but the scene is in US. Although the movie can try to depict the darkened mind set of Nazi supporters in a psychological tempo, I must say that the movie was quite unsuccessful in bringing a strong impression for the audience like me, who likes challenging impressions. Ryan Gosling's performance was totally great although the confused architecture of the screenplay. If the synopsis of the movie was asked from me, I would have written "A believer Jewish young man prefers a very opposite way to show his anger on Nazi. He is in between his anger at Nazis and his anger and mercy on Jewish people who became the victim and who couldn't show deadly resistance to Nazis." The synopsis looks interesting but sub stories cannot complete the whole story. Perhaps, the director tried to show many things at the same time. I don't know, I advise this movie to be watched but will not be one of my favourite ones!

An Orientalist Way of Looking on Gertrude Bell
1 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
My mind is a bit confused after watching the movie 'Queen of the Desert'. For me, the movie looks like an inseparable part of my desert trio, after 'Out of Africa' and 'The English Patient'. But I have a bit hesitation on the personality of Gertrude Bell, whose life was depicted in the movie. All we knew that Lawrence of Arabia, Winston Churchill and Gertrude Bell had all big sympathy with the Arabs and Arab culture and I really don't know who abused / betrayed the Arabs more, the Ottomans or the British.. but certainly both of them.. But this movie looks like nice to some extent but again this storytelling way of the movie is as orientalist as Lawrence of Arabia, Gertrude Bell... I have no doubt about their big sympathy on the Arabs but I have also no doubt how they betrayed their exclusive love! As for the movie again, it is not a movie only on the life of Gertrude Bell, it is not a politic movie, it is not a movie on a Victorian young lady who seeking to live according to her own will, it is not a movie on only love... As I said that I am confused.. There is something missing in this movie that I can't describe.. Nicole Kidman is a great artist but even she was limited about pouring her talent... I really don't know, the missing in this dry- movie may be the rain of the desert...

Way of Seeing
31 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I like the balance in "The Adderall Diaries" as well as performances of the director Pamela Romanowsky and artists (James Franco and Ed Harris). The balance of between different way of seeing. We all may storytellers and we like telling the stories how we perceive and/or how we want to see the truth. We may sometime get closer the truth or we may create our own truth. The movie perfectly depicts this by keeping another well-created family story in the background. The story-telling way of the movie gives freedom to the audience without applying or imposing one way. Very successful direction and James Franco plays perfectly. No need to say how Ed Harris has been a shiny masterpiece. Thank to all.

An Oustanding Movie
1 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Hope perfectly and very realistically depicts the life of refugees by keeping the love between Hope and Leonard at the ground. Hope is a young woman from Nigeria and Leonard is a young man from Cameron. Both want to cross the borders to reach Europe where they think that their dreams will come true. The direction and the performance of the players in the movie made me so impressed. There is no abuse, no push, no exaggeration of feelings in this movie, contrarily very balanced and very powerful story telling. I adored the script and the way of telling stories of people. The script definitely deserves 5 stars. Thank you for such a great movie.
