Futurama (1999)
Underrated and gone too soon (Both times)
Futurama really is one of the smartest series of our time. Not every episode was gold, but some were the best that animation could offer. Unfortunately, Fox canned it because of "low ratings" and I hear the same thing happened with Comedy Central. But at least CC gave it a dignified ending. Nevertheless, the episodes we have are truly outstanding and showcase the shining qualities of the writing, animation, and themes. Definitely worth watching and buying the DVD's. Not to mention, without Futurama, we likely wouldn't have shows like Rick and Morty... let that sink in. Futurama is just one of the greatest sci-fi series of all time.
Rick and Morty: Total Rickall (2015)
Leave it to Rick and Morty to out-Family Guy even the best Family Guy episodes.
Where to start with this brilliant work of art...(Seriously) Total Rickall is (as of this review) the highest rated episode of R&M on IMDb. Though it personally isn't my favorite, I can see why it is ranked the way it is. Watching the family interact with the outrageous characters they think have always known is hilarious and leaves room for a lot of jokes, visual gags, and improvising done by Roiland. The cutaway gags here never cease to amaze and the Nintendo reference just made me giddy! I can even remember every character that appears in this episode (Sleepy Gary, Mr. Poopy Butthole, Photography Raptor, Hamurai, Amish Cyborg, Tinkles, Frankestein's MONSTER, Mr. Bouregard, Cousin Vinny, Baby Wizard, etc.) and that says a lot considering this is Rick and Morty's first, and hopefully not the last, attempt at cutaway gag humor. Take notes Family Guy. Also, the ending twists are smart and very unexpected. Overall, spectacular episode with charm and wit.
Rick and Morty: Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate (2015)
Nowhere close to horrible, but still pretty mediocre.
I will ignore the fact that the previous Interdimensional Cable set the standard extraordinarily high, and instead I will review this episode as it is standalone. This episode feels forced, partially unfunny, and like the writers had no clue where to take it next. Some of the gags are funny (i.e. Stealy, Plumbus, Personal Space, Lil' Bits, and Opposite News) but there are a few jokes that fall flat (Jan Quadrant Micheal Vincent, Man V. Car) The Jerry storyline starts off okay, and quickly becomes somewhat uncomfortable. The whole "Cut off Jerry's Penis" thing isn't disgusting or anything, but it begins to drag and feel somewhat boring. The ending feels irritating, too. Watching Jerry being brutally killed isn't the darkest thing Rick and Morty has done, but it isn't too pleasant. But my main complaint with the ending is that we learn the hospital easily put Jerry back together like stapling two papers, which questions as to why they needed a human penis or donations to solve Shrimpley Pibbles' (I hope I spelled that right) heart problem. Anyways, several plot holes, a lackluster ending, some less than stellar jokes, and a weird direction in story make this my least favorite R&M episode. On one note, I will say the Werner Herzog guest appearance was hilarious and well-done.
