Manbiki kazoku (2018)
My life feels complete after watching this
Everything I could think of in a movie is exceptionally achieved by the film maker. The story telling is amazing, the locations feel so authentic and lived in, visually stunning. The characters are so incredibly likeable, they're all criminals yet I don't feel like they've done a single thing wrong. This movie left me in awe, I just can't think of a movie which has left me feeling like this in the past 5 years. This movie captures so many tiny details which make the family feel like real people, they'll talk over each other, eat from the same bowl, be comfortably close next to each other. The dialogue is also exceptional. A must watch!
Jug-yeo-ju-neun Yeo-ja (2016)
Beautiful, sombre, and underrated
This is the second IMDB review I've written because I was extremely shocked by lack of critical and success this movie has achieved.
This movie gripped me within the first 5 minutes; this movie perfectly captures the beauty and deep sadness of its story.
The main character feels rich in her development; her life is extremely bittersweet. She works so her son can be educated in a foreign country. Throughout the movie, we see her go throughout her day to pick up clients, take care of her friends and take responsibility of the child that was left under her care
We see her interact with her old friends who are suffering from the worst parts of their lives and she makes extremely challenging decisions to end their pain.
I've never seen anything this poignant in a movie; the story will tug at your heartstrings in a genuine way.
I highly recommend this movie!
Monster (2004)
A masterpiece that some cannot appreciate: a slow burn, burns brighter
After seeing a couple of negative reviews of Monster I decided to write a review to explain why this anime really is one of the best and discuss some of the criticisms.
Like many, I was told that monster was an anime to watch if you loved death note. I absolutely adored death note so I decided to give it ago. I was terribly disappointing after several episodes. I was expecting a fast paced psychological thrill ride like Death Note. I can see why many people disliked Monster after seeing DN in this regard.
I decided to revisit Monster with much lower expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed it, watching almost 10 episodes in a day. While death note may be fun to watch its no masterpiece that is of Monster. Monster builds one of the greatest stories in any medium. It dedicates time to introduce its characters but it pays off so much in the long run. Unlike death note, Monster is meticulously structured story that burns slowly but burns much brighter.
I think monster is anime that is meant to be viewed in a different fashion compared to others. I would recommend watching several episodes in a row and when it slows down take a break. This is certainly an entertaining anime when viewed with no expectations
