White Chicks (2004)
Easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
Unfunny, lame, bad acting, terrible and predictable screenplay, 5 year-old tier camera work.
The attempts at "humor" are honestly cringe worthy, and the dumb white girl stereotypes are not funny in the slightest. Lame jokes about sex and racial stereotypes? Pure garbage.
Dumpster fire.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Disappointing to say the least.
My opinion of Tarantino is... mixed. I enjoyed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Hateful Eight as well. Some of his other movies... not so much. I am yet to watch Reservoir Dogs.
This movie is a bit brainless. It's just fighting and blood from beggining to end. One thing Quentin is good at, is making entertaining action sequence and for that I give him lots of credit. There aren't many directors who are more entertaining than Quentin in this aspect.
I find his over the top killing sequences humorous, and the way he lightheartedly deals with death, but in some other topics... not so much. This movie references pedophilia and rape in a very sick way, and tries to pass it off as comedic. Not my cup of tea.
After watching the second movie (which I enjoyed a lot more, it's a 6 or 7 for me), this movie feels very pointless. The plot didn't advance much here, he could very easily condense this into one movie. This starts with a short introduction on the story and then killing for the next hour, it's just weird.
Initially I'd give this a 3 because it feels very pointless and plot-less compared to the second movie, but his quality action, originality, and Uma Thurman drive this up to a 5.
Smultronstället (1957)
Philosophical, existentialist, masterful made.
What a fantastic movie. I would almost certainly give this an 8 or a 9 up until one of the final scenes, where Marianne has a flashback of her conversation with her husband about hthe topic of having children. That scene is one of my top 5 favorite scenes in all of cinema, it's so raw, so thought provoking, so realistic, the dialogue is masterfully written. A pessimistic, antinatalist philosophy is hinted at here, which is extremely rare in movie.
The themes of aging, death and time are central. As someone who mostly watched hollywood movies that don't really care for philosophy I was very pleasantly surprised. Great acting from the main character, Marianne and her husband.
I was also very surprised about the role of women in this movie. This was made in the 50s, and you women driving, smoking, hitting their husbands and overall having a very strong presence in the movie. The "typical" feminine clichés are really not present here which is brilliant. Scandinavia has always been at the forefront of women's rights and this movie certainly shows that. As someone from southern europe, when I lived in Sweden for a few months one of the things I noticed is how traditional gender roles really don't exist there and it's brilliant. These independent, creative and outgoing women of the north certainly caught my heart in a sense.
Fantastic movie. A change frm typical American-centric hollywood films. Skål Bergman!
Dune (2021)
Dennis makes a sci-fi masterpiece... for the 3rd time in a row.
I just finished watching this movie and what an experience, I don't even know where to begin. I will divide this into pros and cons, and as you can figure this movie has a whole lot more pros than cons.
PROS:
-Sound / Soundtrack. 9/10. Hans Zimmer's work is brilliant as always, being a perfect fit for the setting and elevating every. Single. Scene. Notable examples: Saradukar and Dune Worm scenes. One could argue that his soundtrack is a bit TOO intense at times, but I didn't feel that.
-Visuals: 10/10- They are so good one could compare the cinematography to Kubrick's (which is in my opinion the greatest director ever for various reasons). If you've watched Arrival, or even better, Blade Runner 2049, you know what to expect. Dennis knows how to make beautiful, sci-fi shots, and this movie isn't an exception. Not only are the shots well made, the visual effects are literally the best in film. Dennis doesn't use CGI mindlessly until his movies look like a videogame (marvel I'm looking at you), his world actually looks real and immersive, sound design also plays a part in this. This is as good as you can get from a visual standpoint, both effects and cinematography.
-Story: 8/10: Without spoiling, I love the patience Dennis he shows in his storytelling, it's really something that is underrated nowadays. Most Directors today care about instant gratification, and big action scenes, without caring about characters or world building. I give Dennis credit for taking his sweet time with the story. He could've chosen to just jam-pack everything into 1 movie and lord knows what would come out. The story is obviously great as it comes from a world-renowned book, however there were some plot inconsistenties and decisions I found stupid, and I write them in the cons section. Nevertheless I can't wait to see what comes next, and I'll be reading the novel very soon, this world is very interesting.
-Casting and Performances: 6/10 The performances were pretty good over the board except for Paul's mother which at times was not so great imo. Timothee really steals the show, he was a perfect cast for this role. He is gorgeous and has that "prince" aesthetic, really liked his performance here.
CONS:
-There were some story moments I thought were kinda stupid.
**SPOLER ALERT**
That Jason Momoa sacrifice... I think they could literally just have ran at that point in the story, doesnt' make sense.
Secondly, the thing with Paul's mother when he was with the old witch as well as other moments where she just cried for no apparent reason. I think she can sense his emotions beacause of her powers but that isn't really explained, and her performance is kinda bad.
Third: The fat old baron just survived the deadly poison? I mean literally everyone in the room got killed by the poison except for the fat slob who magically survived.
Some of these plot stuff might be resolved in the next movie so I'm not paying too much mind to it. The writing is pretty good however this world is so deep and expansive but we only got time to delve deep into the main character, the others felt a bit shallow. With the time constraints and considering that Dune Universe has like 5 novels around it, Dennis' work couldn't be better.
Anyways, that's what I got. Overall this movie is close to a masterpiece, but some small pet peeves I have with the plot don't let it reach the 10/10 mark. It's a solid 9 for me.
Scarface (1983)
A Gangster Classic
The movie starts out as a typical gangster movie, with drugs, money, pretty women (and Michelle Pfifer in this might just be the most beautiful woman to ever grace television) and lots shooting. It's the story of Tony Montana (Al Pacino) slowly making his way up to the top of the crime scene. He is brave, always ready to go to the action himself and extremely ambitious. Eventually he does become very rich and successful and manages a massive empire worth millions of dollars.
The second half of the movie is more interesting: as Tony manages his new empire eventually he starts losing everyone around him due to his increasingly greedy and ruthless choices to make more and more money. He grows more arrogant and greedy by the day. His empire eventually falls on itself, and his personality which got him to the top becomes his downfall.
This movie's screenplay really reminds me of breaking bad, which is my favorite show ever. The protagonist ends up dying in a shoot out after driving away everyone dear to him. He does have a redemption scene where he saves children before eventually dying.
The cinematography is ok, it is bland but has glimpses of greatness with some iconic shots such as the final one (looking at Tony's corpse as it pans to "the world is yours..."), the characters are interesting and the dialogue is for the most part well written, though I could do without the sexism towards Elvira.
This movie does produce some of the most iconic lines on film history, and this is one of the reasons for my high rating. Lines like "they eyes chico, they never lie" or "say hello to my little friend" or "you mess with me you're messing with the best".
A classic in the genre.
Game of Thrones (2011)
How to ruin a show
As much as I wanted to rate this highly I just can't. After falling in love with the series during the first 5 seasons, it started going downhill quick. I'll rate each season separately.
1-4: 10/10- the writing here is just masterful, and I'd go as far to say it's the best writing in any show or movie period, it even surpasses my favorite show breaking bad. There are so many plots and a deep, rich world to explore. These are some of the best written characters, every one of them. They have clear motives, what they do makes sense, there is suspense and tension but the pacing is still engaging. Good action scenes. Overall just the pinacle of television, you just can't wait for the next episode.
5: 7/10 here is where the directors had to start making up the story as they didn't have the books to follow, and the result is just bad at times. About 50% of the story is made up so that's probably why it's not as worse as it could be. Some of the storylines like Jon Snow's are still interesting though, overall a good season, does not ruin the show for me.
6-7: 5/10 I would say that I enjoyed 6 quite a bit more than 7 but objectively they are both not that great. It's fun to see all of the storylines created in the first 4 movies start to get closed, and a lot of fanservice is shown like Daenerys finally showing off her adult dragons and destroying everything in her path, or Jon Snow beating the Boltons. These moments are indeed great, but THEY ONLY EXIST because of the build up created in the first 5 seasons and nothing more. The visuals are top tier though, this is the best visual effects team on television for sure. We already see the dialogue and overall narrative start becoming bad.
8: 2/10 This season is just taking everything that was built previously and taking a dump on it. The writing is absolutely terrible and there were so many better, more simpler ways to close the narrative in a satisfying manner, but they couldn't do that. This is a bad attempt at GRRM style writing by very incompetent writers (tried to pull of a red wedding type plot twist). What saves this from 1/10 are the visuals.
Better Call Saul (2015)
Best written series since... breaking bad.
As far as writing goes there's Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and Game of Thrones (first 4 seasons, written by GRRM) and then there's everybody else. Not much to be said other than it's a masterpiece. The cinematography is also some of the best out there.
It's slow paced and there's no real 'action scenes' and that could put people off. If you're looking for great acting and writing you've come to the right place.
The Lion King (2019)
Just watch the original
It takes everything good about the original and takes a dump on it. Same storyline but the presentation just ruins the movie. Good cg for sure but no emotion, heart or anything good about the animated movie.
If you wanna watch lion king, watch the original.
Mirai no Mirai (2018)
Great animation, ost. Not so great anything else.
The Good:
This movie has really good animation and soundtrack. It's beautiful all around, simply put it's a joy to look at.
The bad:
They main character, for me, was likeable. A lot of reviewers here hate him and to them I say: please refrain from having kids.
He's just a young boy who is trying to adapt to life after his sister was born. He gets less attention and love from his parents and that's the main plot point of the movie. Because of this, he misbehaves and throws tantrums to get his parents' attention. His parents don't give a **** and so it gets worse. It's kinda painful to see a kid in this position, he is pretty much being ignored and vilified the entire movie.
The story then takes a supernatural turn, with time travel and other surreal aspects. The boy goes on journeys through time that are completely unexplained, his dog acquires a human form and all this to teach him a lesson and make him behave again. He gradually becomes a good kid throughout the movie for no apparent reason and learns to love his sister. This character development was poorly done and the supernatural parts were just confusing as hell, there's no explanation or exposition for ANYTHING, he goes on a travel through time then comes back and learns a lesson, rinse and repeat.
Overall the story was meh, but the animation was great. Also the voice actor (and dialogue writing) for the protagonist was beyond annoying.
