The Last Season (1987)
A SOV coming of age wilderness survival attempted rape revenge film? I guess so. A first for me either way.
Young Mike stares knowingly/longingly at a Rambo poster before bed. Is this foreshadowing or are we to question his burgeoning sexuality? An effeminate young man is taken on a fishing trip with his grandfather where they encounter four unruly "big city" hunters. Grandpa hopes to give him some guidance and usher him into adulthood. One closer to his own than that of the boy's father. Things escalate rather quickly when the boy's beloved dog is shot and his grandpa is disposed of soon after. The boy returns home followed by the "big city" hunters who slaughter grandma too! Now the hunt is really on. As boy meets girl and the hunters are picked off one by one. Young Mike obviously a teenager makes love with obviously twenty something Michelle, glances at the Rambo poster. I guess only young Mike knows. A worthy inclusion to anyone's SOV library.
Lunnaya raduga (1983)
Space is the place.
This film impenetrable. The score is amazing. There is a TV stick that broadcasts 3-D kids programming. Some may say they find the effects amateurish and hokey. I find them utterly fascinating. Not often am I left feeling existential dread for such a sustained period of time. I am in love. I want a hundred more just like it please.
Jackals (1986)
American Justice.
Simon and Simon find themselves on opposite sides of the fence in this one. And dare I say it's easily the best performances by both Jameson Parker and Gerald McRaney I have seen on film. Grimier and kinkier than you might expect. With some nice squib action and some truly adept fight scenes. Watch out for a cool laser pointed rifle thing too. Wilford Brimley is his normal awesome self. And some guy named Jack Lucarelli( a friend of the Simons me thinks) also stars. This one has really stuck with me over the years. Always creeping back into my world. Would love to see a nice version someday. I have it as American Justice on a Lightning Video VHS. Can't recommend it enough.
Deadly Daphne's Revenge (1987)
Something quaint about this.
One well off seriously ass headed bigot (not too far removed from the new white trash money that seems to be prevalent in some parts of our fair country these days) gathers the boys together in his RV for a hunting trip up at his lodge. When stopping for some beers to fill the fridge they spy a young hitchhiker and offer her a lift. Obviously things go awry pretty quickly once they arrive and the booze really begins to flow. There's wanton racism, rape, a suicide, romance, a dog is killed... Not to mention the escaped mental patient whose story bookends this whole affair. Totally sleazy and unwarranted. But definitely worth your time.
