Chad (2021)
I love bad movies and TV shows....
But this has gone too far. Seriously - look at my other reviews - Z-grade Filipino action films, and they're FAR more entertaining than this garbage. I don't much care that a 40 year old woman is playing a teen boy, it's the writing and dialogue that are terrible. The jokes, gags, and setups are cringe-inducing. Not cringe like a Kids in the Hall sketch, but cringe like the jokes on a laffy taffy or Bazooka Joe gum wrapper. Remember the awful dialogue from the movie "Juno"? It was written by a committee of 40-year old hipsters who thought they knew what teens sounded like - this show is Juno turned up to 11. Dreadful.
The only way to possibly explain the reason for this show existing is that there has to be some financial shenanigans going on here between the production company and TBS - money laundering, perhaps? I refuse to believe that you could purposefully write a show this bad.
Cyberflic (1997)
2nd rate buddy-cop movie
This movie is not nearly as bad as other reviewers here have made it out to be. First of all, this is nothing more than a second-rate 48 hrs / Lethal Weapon / Beverly Hills Cop imitation. While it is an Italian copy of these films, it does get several things right. There are plenty of explosions - big ones. The miniature work in the first car chase is amazing. In fact, I had to watch it again to confirm that models were indeed being used. While the dialogue is pretty corny, and the jokes fall flat more often than not, the story within about the villain who has invented a new explosive is good. While Haglers acting is completely wooden, I do like the chemistry between the two leads. It's certainly no Mel Gibson / Danny Glover combo, but again - this is a cheap Italian rip-off. Enjoy it for what it is.
So, the first 55 minutes of this movie are completely bog-standard cop buddy action comedy. Then things get weird. I'll just say that one of the main characters of this movie dies, and then comes back via a dinosaur fighting computer game and becomes (I'm not making this up) The Invisible Avenger. When someone tells the Invisible Avenger that they love him, then he is visible to them. This is where the alternate title of this film, Virtual Weapon, comes into play. I wont reveal anything else, but it's honestly as if one person wrote the first half of this movie, and a hyperactive 8 year old wrote the second half. It's really bizarre, but ends on a happy note. Again, not the best movie - but it's completely watchable! Certainly not deserving of the terrible score it has at the moment. If you like goofy movies, or Italian attempts at American movies I think you'll like Cyberflic / Virtual Weapon.
A Case of Honor (1989)
Much better than expected
I just watched a copy of this, and I cannot believe it's sitting at below 4 at the moment. This was a really well put together story about Vietnam POWs attempting to escape to the Philippines. While it has a cast and crew of mostly unknowns, it appeared to have a much higher budget than most other cheaply made Filipino movies. The film stock is very high quality, and there are several large explosions, many aircraft, and lots of gunplay. I like that there were several different personalties among the prisoners such a the Jesus freak, the snitch, the genius, the junkie, the leader, the hippie, and they all play off each other nicely.
Before the escape the prisoners befriend and elect to rescue several Russian and Vietnamese prostitutes who were servicing the soldiers holding them captive, and the ladies make a nice addition to the team. While escaping through the jungle the party stumbles upon a crashed Air America / CIA prop plane that just so happens to be completely loaded with food, weapons, and engineering equipment. With some help from an indigenous Vietnamese tribe, It then becomes the mission to hold back the enemy, repair the plane, and escape.
While it is a "war movie", this film doesn't take itself as seriously as Platoon or Saving Private Ryan. The writing is more akin to an Indiana Jones movie, and there are several moments of comic relief.
I highly recommend this movie if you're looking for something outside of Hollywood, yet still has a big budget look.
Hari ng Gatilyo (1985)
A competent entry into the vigilante genre.
Daniel is a farm boy and amateur gunsmith. His father returns home from a 15 year prison sentence and is then murdered along with his wife by an old associate. With his specially crafted revolver that shoots rifle bullets and dozens of grenades, Daniel takes it upon himself to exact revenge on hundreds of henchmen - and picks up a stunningly beautiful helper along the way. After seemingly running the width of the Philippine islands and achieving a kill count well into the hundreds, Daniel finally comes face to face with the evil Don Benito and... Well - you'll have to see for yourself.
I really enjoyed this movie. While there isn't any over the top gore or nudity (no nudity at all) it still felt like a well made revenge flick from a cast that was adequate with special effects that were again, adequate.
I've been watching a lot of Filipino exploding-hut movies lately, and this one is definitely at the top.
