Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls (2023)
80's Throwback with More than Nostalgia
Hubie, everyone.
This movie was a ton of fun. If you're into 80's horror comedy, this is for you. Like a Willy Wonka for Satanists of sorts. I was wondering how the character of Onyx would translate to long form content like this, but it worked well.
All of the performances were spectacular. Especially from Rivkah Reyes and Olivia Taylor Dudley. Everyone knew what kind of world they were building in this movie and they played the parts wonderfully.
This isn't going to be for everyone. I'm sure some folks will not connect with this style of humor, or the character of Onyx at all. I think the people who do connect will absolutely love it. I'm glad Sundance did online screenings so I could catch this early.
Also, any movie that scores Ralph Ineson's amazing voice is always worth a watch.
Gonkers.
Prey (2022)
Best Looking Predator Film
The cinematography was gorgeous. The acting. The story. The score. It was all really strong. The action sequences were great. I never thought a Predator film would be one of my favorites of the year, yet here we are.
The Batman (2022)
The Batman Film I've Always Wanted
From the atmosphere, to the performances. The cinematography, the score. Everything about this movie is perfect to me. For a slow burn, gritty detective story running at almost 3 hours long, it never felt like it dragged. Perfect pacing. Can't wait to watch again.
Bel-Air (2022)
Pretty Solid
Apparently a lot of people came into this not knowing what it was supposed to be (that's me giving a certain type of people the benefit of doubt that they really don't deserve)
It's not a 10/10 but it most certainly isn't a 1/10 (wIsH i CoUlD rAtE iT a 0)
The acting is great. The more dramatic tone works for the basic premise of the original series. I'm glad to see a youtube filmmaker get this opportunity after making the fake trailer a few years back.
3 from Hell (2019)
Rejects Rehash
Over all, I found the movie mostly enjoyable. Homophobic language and cultural appropriation around every corner aside. I must say, though, that this felt like almost beat for beat a rehash of The Devil's Rejects.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Not the best the MCU has to offer, but most certainly nowhere near the worst.
It's no surprise that if you click on almost every account leaving a 1 star review, they were created the day they left the review. We all know how these kinds of people like to gather on 4chan and organize their hate campaigns to attack anything mildly female empowering. That's exactly what's happening here. You can tell, by the copy and paste headlines on most of these.
That being said, Brie Larson is fantastic in the role. I've seen some complain about the character being too "cocky and arrogant", although I'm sure those people are big fans of Iron Man, Thor and Doctor Strange.
Great performances all around. Fun references. An interesting take on an origin story. Great to see certain characters return. Goose was quite the highlight. Don't sleep on this film.
We all know it's the whiny ones who have the loudest voice. That's why the rating has evened out after their hate campaign came in to give bad ratings before the movie was even released. Go back to 4chan, where you all came from and just let people enjoy things.
