The New Mutants (2020)
Utterly nonsensical and why?
There are so many plot holes and random unanswered questions that make me say "Why did they do that?" It's literally insane. Bonus points for the slenderman crossover (very ambitious). There was one or two 'acting moments' so not a total loss.
The Guilty (2021)
Fails to deliver the engagement required to make a one-room movie work
In the competition for who can make a movie with the money Mom gave us to go buy bread, Buried (2010) might just have a slight edge over The Guilty. Neither are all that exciting, but at least Buried isn't so contrived. Seriously, how did this man pass a phsych-eval? He's not fit to be a 911 dispatcher let alone a police officer.
There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane (2011)
Greiving relatives is not a strong enough premise for a film
I went into this film ready for your typically HBO documentary roller coaster of plot twists and whatever the case may be. This was most definitely not that. When the initial premise of the film was revealed I though to myself: "So either this woman got drunk and killed 7 people or had a stroke and killed 7 people", at the end of the day what difference does it make. With each passing minute I hoped that some sort of relevant detail would be introduced that might be relevant to the case rather than repeatedly telling me how great each of the victims was. As if I expected the filmmakers to defend why innocent children dying is a BAD thing. It became pretty clear that the film was only going to be focusing on the family's search for answers but when the second set of results came back confirming that the Aunt was drunk I totally checked out. Some may argue that this is a film about a family searching for answers to a terrible event that may not hold any answers but I don't know that there is enough there to tell a story.
The Art of Flight (2011)
If you aren't a snowboarding fan, this might not be for you
If you'll forgive my obvious title, I went into this documentary hoping that myself, someone who is not a fan of snowboarding, could gain a greater appreciation for the sport or at least learn some more about the athletes. That did not happen. While the shots that were captured for this film are undeniably beautiful and the stunts depicted are incredible, this film really boils down to: go to Alaska and go down a mountain, go to Chile and go down a mountain, go to Buffalo and go down a mountain. At a certain point I did start to feel as if I was seeing the same thing over and over. I will aknowledge that I am not the intended audience for this film because it was not for me.
Seaspiracy (2021)
Good message but mediocre presentation
I wholeheartedly agree with the message if this documentary. I think that we truly do need to do something to reduce and reverse the impacts on our oceans. I don't necessarily think we need to stop eating fish entirely but that is beyond the point.
I do however have to agree with other reviews stating that the presentation and general journalistic practices used in this film often times border on sensationalism. Its difficult to see someone take a cause you support and use gotcha journalism and non contextualized statistics/infographics to defend it.
