Il giovane Montalbano (2012)
Even better than Il Commissario Montalbano
The basic plot line of this version naturally follows the original. If you liked the original you will like this as well if not better. Riondino does a great job in that you can appreciate him both as a detective but also as a person. One can feel is ups and downs yet appreciate his ability to do his job well. He's really believable.
Like the original the comic relief grows on you as the characters become more familiar and it seems there are more humorous situations/discussions with those being interviewed. Yet, for me, it did not interfere with the policing aspect of the show. The criminal plot of this show seems a bit more sophisticated in that the crimes have a bit more depth and are cleverly done.
This Livia is also very good. She's attractive, lovable, very patient, but you can watch her character evolve in a way that makes the other Livia from the original more understandable.
If you like detective series in general, this has a good mix of serious/light. If you're Italian, even better. You almost feel as though you have known these people at some point.
It is really regrettable that Mhz doesn't bring ALL the seasons of their shows on board and it's not just the Italian stuff. They really need to do better.
Il commissario Montalbano (1999)
Montalbano is all aroujd enjoyable
Being of Italian descent I was really pleasantly amused by this (and Young Montalbano, too among others). At times it is like watching my family - the tones, the gestures are the same. The attitudes are similar - take care of business, good food, relax when possible. I could identify with all that.
The comic relief may, at times, be a bit too light, but the characters carry it off really well. Mimi and Catarella are fun when they get flustered about something. They do make me laugh.
M also reminds me a bit of a less serious Poirot when he uses the ending to explain to a group what has been going on and how his logic was used to arrive at a determination.
There is also the romantic facet, not serious but realistic enough to identify with the way its played out. You can understand how and why Livia gets so exasperated even though it seems he does truly love her as the exception to all others.
I sincerely regret that Mhz is only showing one season as is true with numerous other detective series Italian as well as others. They need to bring the full show - all seasons - on board.
Gran divertimento!
Bonusfamiljen (2017)
a really good show about regular people
Finally there is a series that is NOT about drugs, drug lords, gangsters, the mob, nasty politics or vicious people who prey on others. this is a well done, nicely acted, well written/directed human story about modern living and the trials/tribulations that come with it and how not rich people evolve in making life good decisions. many situations are fully recognizable and give one a good perspective on their lives. i would have to agree that the parenting is really rather poor. both eddie and Bianca are selfish, lazy, foul-mouthed and totally undisciplined. it seems the fathers have the right idea but acquiesce to the mothers. the third season left me hanging, so i hope there is another.
Der gleiche Himmel (2017)
interesting but leaves you hanging
It helps if one lived in the time when this takes place as that would confirm what you understood was the case, but if not it accurately shows the tense, edgy and somewhat disconcerting feel of the time - when spying was not linked simply to some international government secret but an undercover operation when certain hired people spied on family, friends, coworkers and reported them in such a way as to make them enemies of the state. in that sense it's scary because it lives on in radical political environments even today. the 'Romeo' is not what one might expect in that he doesn't seem to fit into that category, but he does well with the role. one has to remind oneself that he is the enemy preying on unsuspecting victims in the name of the state. the production itself is not necessarily the best I've seen. it has a sort of cheap feel to it, BUT it seems to work anyway. it was good enough as an entertainment that if there is a follow up season, i definitely want to see what happens.
Khozhdenie po mukam (2017)
well done
This is a well done production that entertains throughout. it is more tragic on multiple levels than one might like but not overwhelming. it is also a very poignant depiction of what happens when people get caught up in radicalized rhetoric and then fail to think through the inevitable consequences - something that is relevant today.
Love Is in the Air (2010)
tearjerking junk
I've seen several Turkish productions and give them credit for being able to create a story, but this is the worst junk of theirs I've seen. the upper levels of actors do fairly well but are not enough to salvage this saga of lies and deception. one will have difficulty finding 5-6 decent people in this whole thing. the rest are lying, thieving, scheming conniving, manipulative, vitriolic, venomous, vermin. the horrors they perpetrate on each other and then try to justify it in the name of love is pathetic and disgusting. and what's with the turks that people have to constantly cry in almost every scene - men AND women. don't waste your time.
