In un giorno la fine (2017)
I'm Impressed
I read the bad reviews of this Italian zombie flick and decided to still give it a try because it sounded interesting. I'm glad I did. I am not easily impressed and I watch so many movies of all sorts of genres (in fact, that's all I do with my spare time) and I must say that this is one of the best films I have watched this year. I found that I was not tempted to hit the fast forward button and actually wanted to see what happened at the end, when I usually don't care and switch off out of boredom with most of the films I watch.
The End provided high tension, sure it was predictable but it is just a zombie movie, what else would you expect? It was not boring at all, I felt like the performances were good but most of the dialogue was unnecessary. One man trapped in all elevator arguing with people on his phone and through an intercom does not provide much dialogue, and it was just padded by constant use of foul language which I found rather annoying. I was reading English subtitles when I watched this and I thought, I could have still enjoyed the film even without the subs, since the dialogue is not really important. What makes the film good is the tension, the scary zombies, and for those who like gore, there is some very bloody scenes.
It is very hard to find a good horror movie these days. We are bombarded with so much trash that it makes me feel like giving up in searching for good ones, but finding The End? was worth the effort. It may not be one of the greatest zombie flicks of all time, but it certainly is not one of the worst either. I say, give it a go.
Showgirls (1995)
Superb
I first saw 'Showgirls' when I rented the video upon it's VHS release. I no longer watch films like this but I still remember it very well after viewing it many times and I never understood why people hate it so much.
There are a number of reasons why I would class 'Showgirls' among my all time favorite movies, the music was fantastic (I had to buy the OST) and the story just drew me in from the very start. I have a very short attention span and I usually make up my mind if I am going to like a film or not within the first three minutes or so. Most films I watch, I don't even finish because I get bored very fast and turn it off. 'Showgirls' had me hooked straight away from the scene with Elizabeth Berkeley hitch hiking to Vegas, I wanted to see what was going to happen, what kind of person would give her a ride and I wanted to know what kind of difficulties she would have to face when she got there. Sure, it's predictable I know but I don't care about that. The important thing for me is that the entertainment factor here is very high indeed. I enjoyed seeing all the bright lights of Las Vegas and behind all that was those sleazy creepy little clubs that the leading lady would have to get through to make her first steps to the top. Along the way she encountered all kinds of nasty situations, made some friends and some enemies and she learned the hard way that her dream of becoming a well known dancer in Vegas was not the glitz and glamour that she thought it would be.
Whilst viewing 'Showgirls' I felt like I was right there I was so drawn in. I was not interested in all the nudity that was going on here, just the sheer power of the film was what gripped my attention and I knew that I was watching one of those 'once in a lifetime' type films that I would never forget. I cannot speak highly enough about 'Showgirls' and I just had to come here and give my first review to this marvelous piece of work that is so sadly under-appreciated.
