Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Nightmares (1997)
Episode 10 Review
SPOILER WARNING This is a good episode that clearly sets us up for the rounding the season off. It also introduces us to Hank Summers, who has just the right amount of appearances over the shows running to make his character as the absent father work. I love the small characters nightmares, especially the cool guys and Cordys nightmare. Wasn't hugely impressed with Billy's acting, but it worked for the eeriness of the episode. Bringing in the use of the Master at the end was brilliant. Also, I loved Buffy as a vampire, that was a brilliant idea. The way it went from Giles' nightmare to Buffy's, seamless writing. Overall, another great episode.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Out of Mind, Out of Sight (1997)
Episode 11 Review
SPOILER WARNING Overall, not a great episode, but once again it's required to build the characters for what we know them to be in the future and Angel bringing the Codex at the end, is a clever sneaky addition for the finale. I'm not sure why Giles didn't tell Buffy that it was Angel who rescued them from the basement though. Marcie's character was portrayed badly. She didn't seem that lonely, needed to act smaller and let the others around her act bigger to get the impression of loneliness. It gets the point across nicely though of how blind people can be to others around them. The end felt a little bit random. How did Marcie know where to sit in the classroom at the end?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Prophecy Girl (1997)
Episode 12 Review
SPOILER WARNING I feel this episode ending the season brilliantly. I love the use of the theme tune in the middle of the episode. The fact that Buffy realises that she is a 16 year old girl with her life ahead of her and doesn't want to die, is brilliant because they have portrayed her as a human and not a superhero who thinks they're better than the rest of us. The use of all the characters throughout the season in this episode to bring it to a conclusion is brilliant. I like the fact the Cordy is suddenly on their side after knowing she wouldn't be seen dead or alive with them normally. The graphics for the beast from the Hellmouth were so good, I'm baffled why they couldn't do it in Episode 4. This was a great finale a good opening season.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Puppet Show (1997)
Episode 9 Review
SPOILER WARNING This episode again as many of the previous episodes uses the specific episode story to bring in characters for the future, in this case Snyder. It's quite hilarious, because I don't think anyone would put themselves in front of an audience that big to do things that they are that bad at. I'm not sure the school would want to advertise themselves in a bad way like that to an audience. It's a well thought out episode though to leave you thinking 'Who Done it?'. This episode starts to bring out the character of Cordelia well, and builds on her nicely for the future. I love the fact that at the end before the credits, we just assume the audience accepted the strange scene they were given as the curtains opened, as if they would.

Episode 6 Review
SPOILER WARNING This episode made up for the previous episode and got the series back on track for me. It was a surprise to lose a character again so soon, but showed us we can't get to attached to any small character. I liked the idea of the possession and I think that all the actors and especially Nicholas Brendon did an amazing job at portraying the hyena. I like the fact that again the words at the end of the episode come back later on in a future episode, which shows again the need to watch every episode, so as not to miss anything, because otherwise it will make no sense in the future. I love the use of the pig. I like the use of the music too, whenever the bands play at the Bronze, the music always sets the scene very well.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Angel (1997)
Episode 7 Review
SPOILER WARNING This is easily the best episode of the series so far. We finally go into the mystery which is Angel. I love the tattoo on his arm. I think the reveal of his true identity was brilliant, although I think the scream from Buffy wasn't realistic enough. I like the cryptic use of Darla, and it's a shame we didn't get to know more about her during the show as a whole. One reason I like Darla is because I have watched Angel and know the back story of her, and I wish Buffy The Vampire Slayer had expanded on her more, I think she could have really brought something more to the show as a whole. The end was perfect, although the scar from the end, should have lasted longer into future episodes, when we've seen less damaged injuries, last longer throughout the show. An extremely good episode overall and sets us up nicely and leaves us wanting more.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: I, Robot... You, Jane (1997)
Episode 8 Review
SPOILER WARNING A reasonable episode I think. This shows how much technology has changed a lot since then though, because the computers then seemed so old compared to now. Again this episode is a stand alone story, but it incorporates the introduction of a character for the future which if you miss this episode, the next appearance of Jenny Calendar won't make much sense. This episode sets up the next season brilliantly, and although the individual storyline was not very well implemented, I feel that we got to feel for the main characters more throughout this. The only problem with the beginning of this episode, is that it is not very friendly for people who are partially sighted using words in another language and subtitles. I feel we didn't need to see this beginning bit, and this episode would have worked without it, using an explanation from Giles instead.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Witch (1997)
Episode 3 Review
SPOILER WARNING This episode has an interesting approach so early on in the series. Apart from one or two lines, we don't hear much about vampires in this episode. We start with this episode with the familiar feeling of a story per episode, so if you miss one it doesn't matter, except this is wrong. One thing you see in this episode is the introduction of a character that under normal circumstances wouldn't have had lines and would have just been an extra, but they were given lines because they were being introduced for future episodes, I'm talking about Dr. Gregory. So even in this story per episode structure they are doing at the moment, there is an element of continuous background story from the word go. I also like bringing in the use of witchcraft so early, it opens up a lot of possibilities for the future.

Episode 4 Review
SPOILER WARNING As said in my review of the previous episode, I like the fact they used the character of Dr. Gregory leading up to this episode. I was a little disappointed with the graphics used for the portrayal of the She-Mantis at the end. I think the inclusion of Angel and the 'Fork' Guy in this was a clever bit of writing to make sure Angel is remembered until it's his turn to be brought out of the shadows. It was a nice touch with the coat at the end, which was used as part of a future episode. Again, this is another nice use of the episode specific story mixing in small ways with the overall background story.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Never Kill a Boy on the First Date (1997)
Episode 5 Review
SPOILER WARNING This is one of my lower rated episodes of the season. My reason for this was because before I quite liked the use of the episode specific story being backed up with bits to extend the background story, whereas with this is was the opposite. This episode was based on the overall background/season story and used the episode specific story to back it up and didn't work as well for me, and may have worked better if Owen had been used in future episodes, but as there was no follow on, this didn't work for me. I liked the use of Angel in this episode, it built more on the character that we became more accustomed to in future episodes.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Harvest (1997)
Episode 2 review
SPOILER WARNING Following on from my previous review from Welcome to the Hellmouth, I feel this also concludes a great show opener. I think that Luke didn't react quick enough to his hand being burnt, which made the escape seem a little unlikely to me. I was a little disappointed that we didn't get more of Jesse, I liked him, he worked well as Xander's best mate (who was never mentioned again interestingly for someone who's supposedly his best friend). Unsure why they made Angel character so mysterious and unhelpful to start with, but I like what he grew into. I love Buffy's words to Luke before she stakes him, classic Buffy pun language used throughout. Finally, I wonder if they knew that the final line from the episode would be used so well in the finale years later, love this line.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Welcome to the Hellmouth (1997)
My favourite show
SPOILER WARNING This is a great start to a successful programme. I like the way it starts luring you into a false sense of security. I feel the Vamp make-up initially as with the show Angel was better. In response to other reviews I read, I think the character of Angel was fine until we saw later on in series 2 what he was like before meeting Buffy, then it becomes a little less believable, still great though. I think every character was introduced well and apart from Angel as said above, didn't change much throughout the series'. They seemed to nail the characters personalities from the word go. Overall good opener, with a good cliffhanger to finish this two parter.
