The Last Hangman (2005)
An attempt to show the caring side of capital punishment.
This film takes us back to the days of capital punishment. Days some people believe the United Kingdom should return to. Who would be willing to do this job now. Even Pierrepoint himself said that hanging never achieved anything. Also Pierrepoint himself is portrayed as such a wonderfully caring person, carefully cleaning and preparing the body for postmortem and burial. This was part of the job, and just that, the job he was paid to do. As was shown in the film, the job was kept quiet. Maybe more to do with the official secrets act then a personal privacy issue. People say the man carried out his duties with compassion and sensitivity. A shame he never showed these emotions to the relatives of those executed, as the request to Ruth Ellis' sister for him to be allowed to be photographed by Ruths grave shows neither. Obviously a little artistic licence is required, but let us be thankful that this time is left firmly in he past where it belongs.
Amazing Grace (2006)
Amazing Grace, the title seems to say it all.
As a person born only 20 minutes away from Wilberforces house I have known this story throughout my whole life. The struggles Wilberforce encountered obviously bore no resemblance to the horrors that the slaves suffered through transportation and if they survived, their treatment afterwards. The inner view of the slave ship only gives an indication of the horror these people faced. On screen it does not really seem to convey the brutal reality this space offered.
William Wilberforces house still stands today at 25 High street, Hull and obviously is a museum dedicated to his life's' works. Many items such as the chains and brands used upon the slaves are on display as well as an inner area of a slave transportation ship. This gives a little more reality to the worth of this mans task. I would advise to anyone who has the opportunity to visit his birthplace, be it for personal or educational reasons, but mostly to remember why slavery must be abolished, then and now.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
Disappointing, too much missing.
I wonder if they thought we wouldn't notice? Where were Dobby and Winky? Winky was an important part of the film especially regarding Barty Crouch Jnr. I was also quite disappointed that in the pensive scene the trial was never properly explained, and other characters that will become important in future were completely missed. Hagrid is back as caretaker and not care of magical creatures teacher as he should be, and the part regarding his parentage is glossed over completely. Blink and you missed it. The annoying Rita Skeeter was so insignificant i wonder why she was there. My personal opinion is that it was maybe too big a book to take on, there is really just too much missing. Finally the maze, where were the magical obstacles to overcome? Agreed a talking sphinx could be troublesome, but what about Hagrids Blast ended skrewts? Surely someone could have come up with something !
