Battle Over Britain (2023)
Better than reviews have said
As the film says at the end "the characters and events depicted in this motion picture are fictitious any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental". Very brave to show this film, in the way done, as it truly shows the heroism these people showed against seemingly insurmountable odds. To continually jump in their planes and take to the skies against this presence, of might and power, is truly a showing of the British "Stiff upper lip". Bearing in mind over the previous year the "Germans" had seemingly vanquished the whole of Europe, I'm sure they felt Great Britain "that small island" would cave as well.
What was so lovely about this was the camera angles, and shots made, in the sky. The German Luftwaffe "big planes" simply being overpowered up there as they couldn't turn in time to face the British "little planes, Spitfires" that just flew between and around them. Skies above GB recaptured by end October 1940, the Germans abandoning their attempt to secure those skies. As PM WC says "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed owed by so many to so few". Well said that man!
Doctor Who: 73 Yards (2024)
IMHO follows on nicely from Angels, turn left etc etc. Bizarre!
Have enjoyed the new series a lot so far. Then this happens. I got very confused after first five mins and for next half hour really. Just couldn't "see" where this was going. Then.
RTD really knows how to get the audience hooked. Had me line and sinker. 73 yards. Like Don't Blink, turn left. You just wonder where story going. Then it happens. It makes sense. Sort of. In a wibbly wobbly sort of way.
Brilliant writing, superb acting. Suspenseful. Best yet. Has to go to new depths to beat this. For me best episode since Matt smith era, and his custard and fish finger sandwiches. Just mind blown. Well done!
Halloween Ends (2022)
Glad it's over. Maybe??
I asked Google what's the best way to watch Halloween, as there are 13 of them. Long story short it advised 4 will do - Halloween (1978 original), Halloween 2018, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.
Have now seen all four and have enjoyed them. As some people have said this is more a pop corn movie than a true "slasher" - I find a true sentiment of a good horror movie is one that makes you jump in the first 5 mins, and that sets the tone of the entire film going on. THIS wasn't that. The only horror movies that have REALLY made me JUMP were IT (original, and in certain parts the "remake"), Nightmare on elm street (but I was very young - teens- when I saw that {maybe now I won't find it so much, but just can't get myself to see it!!}. Maybe if they remade it (aka IT) that would make me??).
Anyway, don't want to give too much away on this one. The one thing I did take (more my view than maybe movies intention) was that anyone could be Michael Myers ( thinking Batman) if the cards/events fall in the right order. As someone stated in their review, this should have been called "Corey's Halloween". This guy sees/meets the monster, looks into his eyes, and, as he says to Laurie in the film, if you had just lost yourself in him, how things could have been different.
Very clever take on the whole franchise, if a bit convoluted.
Arthur & Merlin: Knights of Camelot (2020)
A lot better than "the reviews" said
To all you naysayers out there, this adaptation of the classic Arthurian legend was well worth the watch. Yes some of the camera shots were suspect, the acting so so, but it kept to the basis of the legend, and played out well. Some reviewers stated that Merlin was only in it for 5 minutes. Yes in human form he was but as the Falcon he normally portrays in legend, and books, he was in it the whole film long. I enjoyed it!!
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Not as bad as IMDB reviews have said
Clever reimagination of a film series now 30+ years old. Strong storyline held true all way through. Brilliant seeing some of the old favourites back, film better for it. Some very funny moments, some cringeworthy stuff too. All in all a good film, much as James Cameron said, worth seeing just for the spectacle.
