His Girl Friday (1940)
Not Bad
I didn't find the story line to be too interesting. What I did find enjoyable though, was the things Walter said. He's quite funny. As smart as Hildy is, she let Walter walk all over her, when she walked all over Bruce. I guess that shows that Walter and Hildy are pretty alike. The film all in all didn't make much of an impression on me. I found myself getting bored a few times. However, it was not bad. I was interested to see what exactly Hildy would do, even though it was pretty easy to guess that she'd end up with Walter. It was also interesting to see where the "criminal" would end up, and I was not expecting the girl to throw herself out of a window.
Casablanca (1942)
Painful to Get Through
I'm sad to say it, but I found this film to be extremely boring. In my opinion, it dragged on. It did it's job in making you dislike the oppressive Nazi soldiers, and making you want Rick and Ilsa together; but as for holding my attention, it didn't do so. Watching Rick develop as a character was nice to see, as he was very monotone in the beginning and his feelings came up more and more by the end. The best part was the very end, where Rick shoots the German soldier and Renault lets him get away with it. The scene was put together smoothly and really made you like the characters.Another good compilation of scenes were the flashbacks between Rick and Ilsa. Rick's personality was completely different from that of the present. When he was stood up, it made you feel bad and then completely understand his cool composure through he rest of the film. He's a smart guy, and under his hardened exterior lies a loving and caring person.
My Man Godfrey (1936)
Funny
First, off the bat, the mother is hilarious. In the first few scenes she comes off like a snob (which she pretty much is) but later you see that she loves her children and will do practically anything for them. You have to love her stupidity and the fact that she sees faeries. Her protégé gives you many laughs as well, with his bad opera singing and drama. Him acting like a monkey to "cheer Irene up" was one of the goofiest things I've ever seen. Aside from the characters who are all fantastic, the film has a great message concerning money and the elite. It teaches the principle of peoples self worth. The family Godfry served never would have guessed that he could be intelligent or make the fortune and scheme he has. They never imagined he could be so polite, smart, and good tempered. The purest character traits seen in the whole movie were those of the men living at the dump.
Frankenstein (1931)
Surprisingly Great
I was not expecting this movie to be so good, nor was i expecting the moral challenges. The major questions here: what is it like to be God and should you try to be? Which then leads to: what is it to be good? The monster in this film might have been inherently bad because of the criminals brain that he was made with, but we don't know if the murders he committed was because he was just misunderstood. From the very beginning of the monsters life, he was abused by Fritz, Frankenstein's assistant. Threatened with fire which was the down fall of him by the end. It was also made quite obvious that he did not intend to hurt the playing little girl which made the hunt begin.
Hell's House (1932)
Very Good!
You can't call this story sweet because of the bad conditions of the reform school and the couple of shady characters, but the two little boys, the aunt and uncle, and the bootleggers girl friend definitely are. All in all, a very good movie confronting an important issues and morals. My favorite part is when Jimmy first arrives at the school, and gets into a small scrap with his bunk mate, friend to be. His friend comes off as a real jerk at first, but since Jimmy obviously knows how to keep his mouth shut about things and is nice, the friend automatically lightens up. It was great to see Mr. Kelly give himself up at the end. Such a good kid shouldn't suffer on account of an irresponsible man.
I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932)
Meaningful
A great story about the injustice of America and states. James Allen is convicted and placed into a harsh chain gang camp where he makes an escape. This is powerful because before this, he just got out of the military and was only roaming the country to find his dream of being an engineer which wasn't going so hot. After he escaped the camp, he finally became the person he wanted to be- an engineer who has made something of himself. When he gets sent back to the gang, he escapes again, and is forced into hiding. This is the worst part of it all: he was sent to the camps wrongly twice, being forced to become someone who lives in the shadows. Stealing for a living, when that's what he was ironically convicted of originally.
Sherlock Jr. (1924)
Good movie!
All silent films seem to bore me a bit, they definitely aren't my preference, but Sherlock Jr. exceeds Charlie Chaplin films in my amateur opinion. This film picked right up when he fell asleep in the movie theater and entered his version of the pearl steal-er movie. It's very neat when he leaves his body in a dream state and jumps into the screen. It was fun watching the two antagonists try to kill him in the house, and even better to watch him chase down the thieves. When Buster Keaton finally gets his girl (in the dream) it's really sweet to finally see him be able to express his feelings for her. When he wakes up, it's cute and funny to see him copy the movie that's playing to know how to act towards her. From sad, to funny, to happy, this film was pretty good and definitely worth watching.
The Circus (1928)
Not horrible, Not great.
The Circus isn't a terrible movie, but after the first half hour it gets a little boring. Aside from that, the slapstick comedy is funny and the characters are good. The Tramp has a nice personality; he gives up the girl he likes for her happiness. Two good parts are when he's auditioning for roles in the circus and failing miserably; and when he takes the tight rope walker's position and nearly kills himself. Charlie Chaplin does a good job of expressing what is going on regardless of the silence, and the song he sings at the beginning and end of the film is a nice touch. All in all, I give it a rating of 5/10 because although I got bored half way through, there is an appreciation for early movies you must have.
