Teambuilding (2022)
How is this over 2 points?
It says a lot about our culture that our most commercially successful movie in the last whatever-it-was years is a movie that doesn't even have real actors, with few exceptions.
The only interesting characters were the ones played by actual actors. There was a semblance of a plot, but done in the most cliché way possible.
The jokes were terrible, only about how much we smoke, drink and how obsessed we are with women. I think I laughed once.
Characters are one-dimensional and forgettable yet are somehow meant to illustrate corporate life. No semblance of wit, subtlety or cunning.
It feels like this movie was created by a bunch of high-school students. A prime example of why "tell don't show" is a bad idea.
Total waste of time.
Trevor Noah: I Wish You Would (2022)
Unfortunately it takes mature people to appreciate mature material
I was excited to hear about a new special from Trevor. I haven't watched the Daily Show at all because politics don't interest me at all.
I loved the show, I think he grew up magnificently and he shows it elegantly in his stage presence, self-deprecation and skill.
There are now overarching arcs in the story of his stand-up. And seemingly unrelated stories have a common theme, namely schadenfreude. He has raised the bar of comedy very high and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. It is very difficult to deliver this kind of show and he does a great job.
I saw some people say some jokes were rehashes, I haven't consumed enough of his content to see that but I understand that can feel a bit disappointing. However, for me, the pleasure isn't in the jokes, it's in how he plays and delivers them. The last part, especially, was extremely funny and tasteful, and it closes the arc of the whole show. Beautiful.
Unfortunately, it's hard for many people who have strong political views, and don't agree with him, to put that aside and just enjoy a masterpiece in comedy and writing.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
The only logical ending
Dexter is one of my favorite shows ever. And I was very apprehensive about watching the new season because a bunch of my friends told me the ending sucks.
Well, I cowboy'd up and watched it. It is awesome. Michael is gorgeously amazing as always. I truly believe no other actor could be so likeable and so creepy at the same time. Just excellent, and the rest of the cast is also awesome.
My advice, don't listen to all the people who are angry about the ending. It fits in so many ways, it is psychological, poetic, transgenerational and practical. It is the only way Dexter should end. People are just upset because their fantasies didn't happen.
Bravo, I wish all the best to everyone who ever worked on Dexter.
PS: Leaving you to imagine what Batista's experience will be after the ending is thoughtful and heartbreaking. I loved it. Peace!
