Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Why Did They Do That
Good effect, bad plot. I mean, did they ever heard of continuity story telling. It doesn't make any sense, not connecting any dots from previous movies.
Either they did not really understand the characters that they write or just plain lazy to tell a good story. Some potential characters are totally wasted in this movie. I'm usually pretty okay with bringing old character either villain or prontagonist back to screen, but not like this.
How are they gonna recover from that I wonder.
Abigail (2019)
Great concept, poor execution
I admit that I watched this movie solely because the steampunk concept. But I regreted it deeply. It's a waste of time and money. The visual still not worth it.
The plot is a mess, the inconsistencies are everywhere (really stumped me at the fighting scene where the whole room is on fire), the characters' motivation, action and relation of each others just don't make any sense. I even hate the main prontagonist, Abigail seems condescensing at times and others obnoxiously aggravating with no subtlety in her actions, and Bale is so uninteresting as someone who supposedly the leader of their cause and very shallow. My fave was Stella (hey, a good character who is quite level headed, why doesn't she become the leader), but then nevermind, they ruined her halfway. I forced myself to sit until the end to see if they have at least one tiny bit of redeeming part. They don't.
How can they release or approve that kind of script and editing is a big question for me.
Chen qing ling (2019)
Love it so far
This series is an adaptation from the novel Mo Dao Zu Shi aka Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. Due to restriction in Chinese about certain content, the main characters (Lan WangJi/Lan Zhan and Wei WuXian/Wei Ying) relationship is downplayed as bromance or really intense friendship.
Though some of the event changed but the overall story is still good. The cast are doing a great job. The productions also done their job beautifully (I really love the detail of their costumes). What irks me the most probably the quality of CGI.
Aladdin (2019)
Just an OK movie
Probably kids who never watch this movie will like it. As for me, although the movie is neat but it's lacking certain feel (maybe because I always compare it with the cartoon one that got more wacky/vibrant vibe). The songs that good are the ones with intense sounding drums, Naomi Scott's part and some of Mena Massoud's.
The actors and actresses are doing a great job. Will Smith is great as a genie (still cannot help to compare to the energy from the cartoon one). I love how Mena Massoud portrays Aladdin and how Naomi Scott portrays Jasmine, their chemistry is great. But Jafar's portrayal, not so much. He lacks certain sinister/evil aura.
The plot itself more or less the same with the cartoon, except the part where Genie and Delia (handmaid of Jasmine) got hitched and when Sultan make Jasmine as Sultan.
For such a big production, the props sometimes feels tacky or cheap. The hypnotism effect thingy with Jafar's snake staff does not look well executed (looks like a bad soap opera effect). Some of the costume are great but some are just not working out.
Therefore this movie is okay but feels kinda flat compared to the cartoon ones.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
Brutal fighting scene
I gotta say... This movie is brutal, so much more than its previous. The fighting scene is choreographed beautifully (and violently). The gunshot, hand to hand and any other weapon available scene is totally adrenaline induced (for me anyway). John Wick looks badass in every fighting scene (the dogs also got lots of biscuits from me, they are such a good dogs).
We will get a glimpse of the motives behind some character, which is interesting but sadly not much explored (Anjelica Huston as the Director, Hale Berry as Sofia, etc). Apparently many of the assassins are John Wick's admirer/hardcore fans. I like how Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman characters' is being portrayed in this movie (bonus point since they did not just killed off in this movie, so maybe someday they will face off again?). They have some dialogue in Indonesian surprisingly, since I thought they will say it in English.
I am intrigued about the high table and the structure that they have (how do you become the elder sitting around in the middle of desert but still looking fine? or adjudicator who listing assassins or other dangerous people about their misdeed and telling them that they only got 7 days to make settlement?). The assassin network and channel/parties intertwined are also need to be explored further (so far I see the hobos network, the operators place, doctor for assassin, ballet/assassin-will-be training mansion where John Wick came from, another Continental Hotel in different country, the place they make their own currency). Hopefully we will see more in next movie.
It is a great action movie, and I am not disappointed so far. The ending make me anticipate how it will play up in next movie.
PS: a dog is shot but don't worry, he/she is fine
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
An enjoyable movie
I think you can watch this movie with kids or family members. It's a fun and heartwarming movie. I will not nitpicking at the plot because there is too many to grouse about.
Just sit, watch the movie (and awww ing at pikachu and the pokemons cause they are so cute), enjoy the heartwarming and funny moments and you will not be disappointed.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Pretty okay closure
I will say this movie is epic. With so many cameos and great CGI, as expected from Marvel. The actors and actress are great (shout out to Robert Downey Jr.) though sometimes the lines is not so great . Some of the lines will bring you emotions (mainly related to family interactions like Tony Stark with Morgan, Pepper and Peter Parker, Thor and Frigga, Morgan and Happy). Lines for Hulk/Bruce Banner is delightful, did not expect that.
What irks me the most is about the plot and character development. The time heist is quite messy, so many plot holes (maybe they don't really care about continuity error?). What happened to tesseract stole by Loki? Does it have no consequences? What happened that to Steve (and mjolnir)? Did Steve let all the evil happened just like that after he decided to stay in past therefore he is not worthy of mjolnir?
Just some warning for those who bring their children, Thor is quite violent in early part of the movie (there's a scene where Thor decapitate Thanos). After that Thor is depicted as some lazy, layabout drunkard who cannot move on from his failure after Thanos snapped his fingers.
All in all if you are a casual fan, probably you will enjoy the movie. But if really concerned about the plot and character, the ending kinda ruin the whole movie for you.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Decent Origin Story
Marvel have done a quite decent movie for Captain Marvel. The plot is generic enough. The humor is good, mostly because of Nick Fury, Goose and Skrull characters. The drama is quite good also, I can see the developing dynamic between Nick Fury and Carol Danvers, the strong bond between Maria Rambeau and Carol, and the shifting power-play interaction between Yon Rogg (team leader of Carol's Kree team) and Carol. Quite clever of Marvel for telling us how Nick Fury lost his eye (not expecting that but kinda fits). Also about who is the real villain in the movie, I know from the start of movie that some character have "not-the-good-guy" vibe. Still I kinda feel blindsided of the Skrulls who the real motive are to reunite with their estranged family (not excusing the bad things that they done and it make them look villainny at the start of the movie). But for me it's quite an achievement since the woman in this movie is not become only an object (not as male sidekick or reduced as romantic interest or as sexual object). This movie putting into perspective how woman often treated by society. And since its a heroine movie, in the end of course she saves the day. So despite some of plot holes (how the tesseract come to play) or dragging storytelling, the movie is decent enough for me.
