Eden (2021)
Unique production style with stunning filming locations.
First of all, Eden has the best filming locations I've seen since Death In Paradise and the cinematography takes full advantage of the natural landscape.
Secondly, the storyline, while not really riveting, unfolds in kind of a retro and interesting way. A psychological drama you'd expect to see in a previous decade with a bit of a new age aspect to it.
If you're looking for something different to get out of your own headspace this could be worth a try.
The Crew (2021)
Buffoonish and dumb.
Couldn't get half way through the first episode and turned it off. Fans of Will Ferrell like comedies may like this as the characters are overly simpleton-like and the plots seem like a comedy version of the Jerry Springer show. Just really bad.
Downton Abbey (2010)
Could be the single best tv show of the modern era.
Downton Abbey is the embodiment of excellence. Well written with intelligent and inspiring storylines. The cast is superb and the show rises above the mediocrity that is all too prevalent in the entertainment industry.
CHiPs (1977)
Good show and a pleasant diversion.
There's nothing remarkable about this show, but Chips gets extra bonus points for being a great entertainment escape for anyone watching during the dreary 2020 corona-lockdown era. Apparently tv shows from the late 70's have the best ingredients for boosting cheerfulness and optimism. Highly recommended for people looking for new tv shows to watch in this unpleasant moment in time.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Die hard action movie fans will love this but no one else
Let's start with the good. The filming locations and scenery were stunning and the action sequences were very well done. Now for the bad. There was little to no character development and not much in the way of any real plot. A better balance of action versus plot would have gone a long way in making what should have been a great movie.
The Stranger (2020)
Great show but the 8 minute episodes were tiresome
First, all the short episodes basically amounted to the length of 1 movie and the actual content of the show was very slick and well written. A high tech thriller that was unexpectedly entertaining. Second, all the short episodes made me not want to watch anything from quibi again as it became rather tedious loading episode after episode which is something anyone coming home from a busy day and looking for some relaxation is not going to feel like doing. These 8 minute episodes are the dumbest thing to come along since the inclusion of dance/music cameos. I think that I would've given The Stranger a rating of 10 if it had been formatted like one full length movie.
The Good Place (2016)
One of the best comedies of all time.
Good Place is definitely one of a kind. The writers took risks and put together a very thought provoking show. The cast was spectacular. There's really not much bad you could say about The Good Place.
Dynasty (2017)
Drivel
Season 1 was reasonably entertaining, but the show seemed to go rapidly downhill in season 2. The characters of Alexis and most especially Fallon were downright cringeworthy. The self absorption displayed was cartoonish and simpleton-like. The Dynasty reboot missed the mark all over the place. Poor writing, bad acting and just an all around mess.
Modern Family (2009)
Good show but a bit too homogenized.
Entertaining in a modest sense and good for families watching together, but Modern Family lacks any real spark. There's little about the show that really draws you in and perhaps the writing could have been bolder rather than safe.
Superstore (2015)
Funny show with relatable characters.
At the point of watching Superstore to the end of season two, I would have to say it's in the top five comedies of the 2010's. Good character development and storylines.
The Love Boat (1977)
A nice escape from reality.
This review is a bit tainted by watching this show during the 2020 lockdown, but the Love Boat is a very delightful departure from dreary reality of today. A great show to watch to make you feel more upbeat.
Devils (2020)
Watchable but not great.
This show is mildly entertaining but a bit bland. It seems as though the writers were going for a procedural version of the banking world and fans of that type of show will probably like it more.
The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008)
Good show if you're craving early 2000's nostalgia.
After watching several episodes of this show, I really can't see why it's rating is so low. Maybe it got bad after season 1. There's nothing remarkable about Secret Life, but it is none the less watchable. If you're running out of tv/movies to watch it could be worth giving a try. The writing and acting are decent enough though it can be too preachy sometimes. The cast is probably the highlight of this production.
Brave New World (2020)
Dull and vacuous.
This show is just simply uninspired and the basic premise is unappealing. Entertainment at its most drab.
Snowpiercer (2020)
Best TV show for summer 2020
After reading the reviews for this show, I was expecting to see something much worse and was very pleasantly surprised to see something completely different. I've never seen the movie and had no basis to compare it and therefore had no expectations. The writing is not just very good, but is thought provoking and very relevant to today's reality. A very entertaining watch.
The Great (2020)
Funny and original. Too many unrelated subplots that seemed to wander aimlessly.
The concept of a period piece with raunchy humor was a nice change of pace. By the halfway point of this series it simply became scattered and unfocused. This show tried a new style of production which could have been very interesting and fresh if it had been executed just a little bit differently.
Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet (2020)
Mediocre
The writing seems a bit too tilted in an adolescent direction. The characters don't seem real and frequently act like they just did a line of coke or crystal meth. I don't see this having much appeal to many people over the age of 25
Messiah (2020)
Very mysterious, compelling, unusual, and powerful
This has got to be one of the hardest shows to write a review for. Not really sure what it's about or where it's going, yet it is absolutely entrancing. At the end of every episode I can't wait to watch the next. This show is completely outside every box the entertainment industry has ever put out.
Spinning Out (2020)
Absolutely Superb
A character drama with a strong central plot. Great cast and writing. This show really draws you in and keeps you there. Bravo!
Avenue 5 (2020)
Dumb
Unfocused storylines. No character development. Scattered and random production style. Just plain flat. A real dud.
Soundtrack (2019)
This could have been an amazing show. But...
Great acting, great storylines, great writing, but the inclusion of the actors breaking out into dance/music cameos during the show detracts very negatively from the show overall. I have to zoom past these hideous scenes to watch what would otherwise be an amazing production. Whose idea was it to include these music cameos? They should really be fired.
The Boys (2019)
A very welcome change of pace.
This is definitely not what I was expecting when first beginning to watch. Very intelligent and thought out writing. Please make more shows like this.
What/If (2019)
Sophisticated entertainment.
I can see why a lot of of people don't like this show. It's not for everyone. The writing will only be appreciated by those who are more into psychological dramas - kind of reminiscent of the type of show that could have been very popular in the 90's. The storylines go a little below the surface which I personally find very refreshing. I'd really love to see more shows like this.
Good Omens (2019)
As an American, I didn't find this show appealing
This show seems like it was intended to target
children as it's primary audience. If this is the case then perhaps it could be considered a good show. There's too much of a Mary Poppins vibe.
Take Two (2018)
Smart, suspenseful, and entertaining.
Every single element necessary to make a good show is here. The writing is very good. The cast is really good and has great chemistry. Production is solid. The only thing I don't like about this show is that there aren't very many episodes to watch. I really hope this gets renewed!
