In the Heart of the Sea (2015)
Beautifully shot and well cast ....A whale of a time...
SHORT REVIEW- Rating- 3.75/5 3D level - Very good
Going into this movie one more expect a whale vs sailor action movie after seeing all the to spots and trailers, but surprisingly there isn't much ' Moby Dick' , and in the words of Brendon Gleeson's character, Thomas Nickerson, while narrating the whale story to Melville ( Whishaw) , the story is about two men, Captain George Pollard and the First mate, Owen Chase, who are played by Benjamin Walker and Chris Hemsworth respectively as they command the crew of the Essex in the search for whale oil. As the trailers suggest, they are attacked by a bull sperm whale and are forced to survive under severe circumstances and even resort to cannibalism.
The good- The whale action sequences are beautifully shot and the 3D effects surprisingly add to the excitement. The cast is also really good which consists of Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, Benjamin Walker, Ben Whishaw, Brendon Gleeson and Cillian Murphy all doing justice to their roles. The entire second act is riveting and I actually cared when someone died on board unlike in any ' Pirates of the Caribbean' movie. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland also stand out.
The bad- Not enough Moby Dick in the movie. The whale only appears during the second act and has a brief appearance in the third act and is the film's Godzilla. Benjamin Walker also deserved a much larger role and he is not allowed to shine in the presence of Chris Hemsworth. Also, even though the action was riveting, these scenes lack those blockbuster moments which stick with you even after the movie and ultimately leaves the action a bit forgettable.
Verdict- I have a strong feeling you will like is one if you enjoyed movies like Godzilla where the monster has less screen presence and still enjoy movies like Life of Pi and cast away
The Intern (2015)
Great Chemistry and some good humour make it a fuzzy experience
SHORT REVIEW- RATING - 3.5/5
Nancy Meyers' latest flick is satisfying and very funny. Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway have great chemistry which is the main plus point for the movie. It doesn't rely on slapstick humour and actually gives some good clean jokes. the scene where they break into Jules' mom's house if hilarious and the dialogue is pretty commendable. However, in the final act, there is a twist which almost ruins the fun of the movie and the movie takes a much more emotional toll.
+ Great Chemistry + Good Humour + Fast pace - Third Act's small twist - Tonal changes towards the end - unnecessary love track between DeNiro and Russo
Bruce Lee: The Fighter (2015)
Fun but generic
SHORT REVIEW- Rating- 3/5
+ Ram Charan and Rakul Preet Singh are rocking + visually striking songs with good beats + choreography + light hearted first half +Chiranjeevi's cameo - generic plot - mostly weak comedy in second half
- Arun Vijay is wasted
It's very routine in screenplay and plot, so if you are looking for something new then try some other movie. The lead pair do very well and are great in the songs. Thaman has composed three good songs while the other two are monotonous. Although it is just like Vaitla's other films, it's choreography and lead actors save it from turning into another Aagadu...if you go in with very low expectations you will enjoy it more
Rudhramadevi (2015)
Excels in Rudramadevi's portrayal but suffers from poor direction
SHORT REVIEW- Rating- 2/5 3D level- GOOD
The movie has good performances from Anishka and Allu Arjun who are major assets to the film. Although the VFX isn't good, the 3D manages to hide it, with loads of gimmicks. BGM a and Music are disappointing and the supporting cast is pathetic. The villains are cheesy and their acting is bad. the direction is also weak in many parts, as Gunashekar sacrifices plot for a mindless third act. He spends too much time on Anushka 's dual role and tells us nothing about Rudramadevi's famous conquests.
+ Anushka's dual role + Allu Arjun' + 3d effects - wasted supporting cast - dumb villains - climax is a headache - screenplay - poor direction
Ims till going to be generous with a 2/5 for the hardworking crew who have made TFI's first historic movie
Talvar (2015)
Dark and disturbing!
Talvar is brilliantly directed by Gulzar, and manages to tell two stories to the same murder case. SHORT REVIEW-The performances were good as everyone plays their part exceptionally well. Irrfan Khan stands out in his likable character. he once again proves while he's the most versatile star these days. the direction is award- worthy. BGM isn't quite noticeable as the movie works best when there is silence! Plus points- + Irrfan Khan + the movie shows that the case has been researched well + conference scene in the end + Screenplay + supporting actors
Minus point- - First half doesn't have as much excitement as the second
The Martian (2015)
Funny and inspiring but lacks excitement!
Saw this with very high expectations ...at midnight.....was impressed but In the end I felt it wasn't as exciting as other stand alone space flick alike interstellar, Graviy( which was overrated in my opinion but still worth it in 3d and Apollo 13 ....the story is pretty much what you see in the trailers, and you know how it will end but this film starts out very well....the storm in the beginning was great and how Damon's Mark Wattney grew the potatoes was fascinating and also how he made the water. When most of that is over, the viewer is left wanting more though. Ridley Scott's direction was top- notch and encompasses all the characters and sub plots very well unlike a few of his recent movies. Matt Damon's performance is awesome and he does very well. He might even be nominated for an Oscar next year. The rest of the supporting cast are in brief roles and some don't really have much to do except crack a few jokes, however, barring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jeff Daniels. I actually felt Jeff Daniels' character could have had more negative shades to actually steer the plot better. The Cinematography was brilliant but it's the background score which disappoints as there is no transcendent track which gives you goosebumps or adds to the galore.
Plus points - + Matt Damon as Mark Wattney + Brilliant first half + Cinematography + Funny yet inspiring + sound mixing Minus points- - Uneven pacing - disappointing background score
Final Rating - 4/5 3D level - UNNECESSARY
