Transcendence (2014)
Thought provoking
There seems to be a mixed bag of reviews for this movie and, based on the ones that I read, it seems as though many of the ratings are based on whether the philosophical standpoint espoused in the movie aligns with reviewers' personal views.
To me, the thing that makes this a good movie is that it causes you to think about what it means to be human and what consciousness is. Questions like: If you upload somebody's brain activity, are they the same person?
Aside from the movie being thought provoking, I always find myself heavily invested in the main characters' relationships and, because of this, the ending always leaves me with an ineffable feeling of peace.
Skins: Finale (2007)
Ruined by the ending
This episode was great until the final few minutes when they ruin the emotional moment by having the cast lip sync a song. It's completely unnecessary and it doesn't fit the mood that's setup moments before. As a whole the episode would be a 9 star in my books but, due to that 1 star ending, I have to give it a 5 star.
I've rewatched skins countless times and this is the only episode that annoys me.
Breach (2020)
The new go-to "Bad movie"
There are plot holes every few minutes, sketchy CGI and every other line is cheesy or makes no sense. If you're looking for a version of 'Alien' that appears to have been made by middle schoolers, then this is for you. I recommend that you spare yourselves the agony of enduring this awful movie.
Stowaway (2021)
Disappointing
TLDR; Plot holes, a lackluster ending and no character development.
As other users have already pointed out, there are some plot holes that leave you frustrated at the writers that I'll list below. The biggest disappointment was how the movie abruptly ends with no character development and an unsatisfying ending. Credit is due to the actors for doing a good job with the script they were given, and to the team who made the movie look visually good.
Some examples of the plot holes I noticed: Not having the clamps ready when descending tethers, not attaching the oxygen cylinder to the suit, not having spare parts for the life support, and the algae spontaneously dying.
Fractured (2019)
Psychological
If you enjoy movies that engage your brain throughout as you try to figure out what's real and what isn't, this is for you.
Prank Encounters (2019)
Ruined by being fake
After the host making a big deal out of everything being real, I was massively disappointed to see that it was clearly fake and he'd just lied to all the viewers. Other commenters will have likely posted evidence of this so I won't bother going into it.
In my opinion, the pranks are creative and would be really funny/interesting to watch; however, the poor acting from the "victims" and the blatant mistakes (e.g. Mics on the "victims") make it cringy to watch. I don't understand why they didn't just do it for real.
Code 8 (2019)
Refreshing change from other superhero movies
Contrary to most superhero movies, Code 8 depicted a scenario that felt realistic. The 'powers' (the name for people with superpowers) came across as realistic, normal people which is a nice change of pace from the more common exaggerated superhero movies.
Code 8 displays the political side of a world with superpowers by showing how the public's perception of powers changes, how they're treated in society and their struggles. I like that similarities can be drawn between how Code 8's society heavily discriminate against powers and real world examples of discrimination against other ethnicities/sexualities. This may be why the movie felt so profoundly realistic.
Personally, I felt like the story was decent but missing something. The ending felt inconclusive, as if each of the final few scenes should have been stretched out.
100 Humans (2020)
Spreading misinformation
I like the premise of the show - conducting experiments using a varied sample of people. The hosts can be irritating at times but, for the most part, they're fine. This show could've drawn a higher rating if it weren't for the TERRIBLE EXECUTION. A significant number of the "experiments" they conducted were unbelievably flawed in their method and conclusions. I would be able to just ignore this and continue watching for entertainment, HOWEVER, every time they finished an "experiment" with a flawed conclusion, I couldn't stop thinking about the large number of viewers who will internalise these conclusions and now harbour potentially false information. The producers need to actually try hiring somebody who has at least a basic understanding of scientific method before blurting out misinformation to the general public.
TL;DR - The interesting premise is let down by the awful execution which is ultimately spreading misinformation.
The I-Land (2019)
Awful
All of the characters are incredibly unlikeable. 50% of every conversation is made up of unnecessary sarcastic passive aggressive remarks which makes it unbearable to watch. There's so much unnecessary confrontation right from the get-go that it's completely unrealistic for a stranded scenario. Not worth wasting your time on this, it's just a terrible version of Lost.
