A Haunting in Venice (2023)
How can you not love this movie
The overall average score on imdb for this film just does not do it any justice.
I say film, as it has that old school who dunnit' feel to it.
If you grew up with Murder She Wrote, and a millenial like me, lol, then this movie is one you would enjoy. By the way, where can I stream the old Murder She Wrote episodes, Jessica Fletcher was the OG Nancy Drew of her time, ;)
A Haunting in Venice, is an entertaining movie. And yes, in the end you know who did it, it's easy to see, and figure out how
was done.. but still I enjoyed watching how Poirot deciphers the clues. The how, I got got right, also slightly wrong as I thought it was through a different mechanism (no spoilers, lol).
Don't expect the movie to be as fancy as the Knives Out franchise, but it's still throughly enjoyable.
Recommend it for sure.
American Horror Story (2011)
Giving it a 9, but..
Loved Coven & loved 1984. But this season is just is not that great.
Decided to watch Delicate because of Kim Kardashian. For me it's always exciting to see whats new in the her world and what she's taking on regardless of the nay sayers.
But this story line just doesn't do any of the actresses & actors any justice.
I feel like there's a whole lot of nothingness happening in most episodes. The story feels like it's dragging most of the time with little to no point to it. It's like the directors want to keep you in a state of dejavu, a slow.. slow.. slow.. ground hog day endless cycle.
Maybe it still gets better..will wait and see.
Barbie (2023)
Take your mom, sister, daughter, aunt, everyone to see this movie!
This movie was so unexpected.
Completely opposite to what I thought it would be.
The best movie I've seen in a long time.
There were moments it had me laughing and moments in tears. It gently pushed me into self reflection and introspection which I never realised I needed to do for the longest of time.
The movie dealt with so many issues, such as societal expectancies, emotional depence, perfectionism, stress, anxiety.. It brought forward self awareness, emotional intelligence, and so many insights into ones self.
This movie is a must see for all women and men who are open to growth and developing their mindsets.
As a millenial this movie resonated on another level, it reminded me of the self I was at a younger age, before falling into societal norms.
Will definitely watch it again and again.
Citadel (2023)
Surprised by how good it was.
This was better than I thought it would be.
It felt like I was watching a good book come to life. Can only imagine how good reading this script was for the actors'.
Lots of plot twists & turns. Most not surprising but enjoyable non-the-less.
Yes, we have seen similar before - they give reference to such movie, which I thought was witty, but it works. The pace is good, fast enough - not as slow as some of the other series & movies seen before.
The colours stay mostly vibrant consistently across episodes and doesn't turn into that grey doom and gloom production scenes that most series end up becoming after a while.
The acting is good. Must say, Priyanka was a good choice. She brings a freshness to a somewhat stale spy movie genre. She handles the range between beautiful seductive & kick ass rough-it spy really nicely.
Richard Madden also plays his part well. And I love anything with Stanley Tucci, his character was made for him (or the other way round, lol).
Not sure why it has such average reviews. Think if this was aired on Netflix, where more people would have access to watch it, it would be rated higher - especially here in South Africa - Amazon prime you need to market better.
Looking forward season 2, hoping that it won't become too cliché. What was also exciting was the whole Spy-verse thing, that looks like it's going to be good too.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (2023)
It was just missing somethings..
After loving the Bridgeton series' I was so excited to see the prequel series.. But alas, the Queen Charlotte series was just missing some of the Bridgeton Je ne sais quoi.
I think it could be summed up in a few things..
Firstly, the number of episodes did not do the Queen Charlotte story line any justice. The series ended so quickly that I had to check to see if I somehow skipped episodes. It felt like it was left hanging up in the air.
The story could've been portrayed a bit more concise. Perhaps it was because each episode showcased two different timelines, which in the end stifled each era's storyline.
The way in which the episodes were being filmed, also seemed a bit off. The scenes were a lot more gloomy, not as bright and airy as with the Bridgeton series' - with the exception of Georges 'medical' treatments which understandably needed to be more dark and dingy.
That breathe of fresh air feeling, the magic, the vivid and brightness of colours, was not there or was insufficient.
Somehow there also a lacking in the music or tones of music. I hardly remember any of it.
The actresses and actors on the other hand, did really well. They all brought their A-game and did their best to bring the characters to life.
All the female characters were perfectly cast, as well as the two aids to the young royals.
Overall, I felt like this was'nt the same Shondaland that put together the Bridgeton series.
They had the winning magic formula in Bridgeton, it's a pity that it didn't convey all the way through the Queen Charlotte series.
Hopefully the next chapter of the Bridgeton or a second season of Queen Charlotte will bring the life and light back again.
IMO.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Lots of Action, but where's the Babayaga?
Always loved the John Wick franchise and going into this one I was prepared for lots of Action scenes.. And there were lots and lots of Action scenes. All the actions scenes were well thought out, well shot and properly executed. There is no denying the fight scenes came together excellently.
Problem is, I feel they focused so much on perfecting the action scenes that it took away from the underlying concept of John Wick.
John Wick the one known as the Babayaga, feared the boogeyman, a mythical man who's name shouldn't be uttered. A man who got out for Love, lived his life and who later lost the love of his life to disease, found some hope in a puppy gifted from his said love and then.. Well, we all know the rest...
The last installment had so many gaps or ommissions. John hardly speaks, no real conversations happen, no new quirky witty sayings.
Even going after the high table starts in the dessert and then ends as quick as it starts - this after almost the whole 3rd installment was set on finding the high table in the dessert...? They don't show who the high table is, he doesn't even get close to them...? Not even in New York. After all this, he just ends up killing the representation of the High table - again. What happened to 'Winston, tell them.. I'm coming, I'm going to kill them all..'
The guy with the dog - what was his back story? The whole time I thought he was sent by John's friend from the 3rd movie, ie Hailey Berry, to look out for John. But no, they wrote this guy in as a new character looking for a certain pay day. The story just didn't fit.
The opponent was like a Harry Styles version of a villain. There was no way that guy could be a high table representative.. It made no sense.
The scene where he stabs the tracker guy in the hand just didn't feel realistic. It felt like if the tracker guy stabbed him back in the hand and asked him to show him what kind of man he is, he (representative) would've passed out. It felt like he was all glamour and no grit.
Talking about dogs, John not once spends any time with his dog in the whole movie. They bring the dog in the end of the movie, but never with John. How could this be? Johns dog is an essential part of Johns character, his humanity. How did they miss this?
The King of the streets, also had such little airtime. They don't show how he helps John other than bring him his cavalier suit. There was so much more to him they could've brought into the story, but didn't.
Johns friend, who gives him refuge dies at the hand of Caine, but why? It made no sense to kill him off. Then they leave the story of the daughter who asks John to avenge her father's death hanging in the air. It was so unnecessary.
I did still enjoy the movie but am saddened by the fact they ended it the way they did. I expected a lot more, and not the measly 2 minute unalive scene they gave him.
There was so much potential they missed... The high table could've offered John a seat at the table, and we see him either reject it or work his way through it from the inside..
Good Trouble (2019)
Fresh and evolving. Love this show!
It's like a breathe of fresh air.
A diverse group of people living together, figuring out their lives, trying to keep true to themselves and be there for one another.
Its a great feel good series.
Love how it started with the sisters starting a new chapter of their lives and evolved to how each one staying in the Coterie goes through their own stories in life.
As the seasons go on, the different character developments get stronger. This is great!
I love how the episodes are written giving an equal amount of time focusing on each characters story.
Nice to see strong female characters, each capable of looking after themselves. Also, how the male characters are supportive, figuring out their own lives while being respectful to those around them.
Also like how the writers don't just fall into the same old cliché story lines. For example, I'm glad they didn't make Isabella super crazy and vengeful. They show her wanting to be better, speaking to a psychologist, getting the help she needs. Love that.
I do hope they give Mariana and Evan a chance for happiness. It's the one love story that needs to have a positive outcome.
Love how Mariana keeps her independence, she has a brilliant mind, and great personality. She shows that no matter one's background or ethnicity, you can go out and conquer the world.
Also love how Evan respects her choices. But in the same breath supports her and gives her the space to grow in her career. Also, how Mariana respects Evans boundaries as he is on the spectrum and doesn't judge him for being different.
I hope they end up together and are both ridiculously successful. Would be nice to see Mariana have it all, she deserves it.
There is so much happening and it's in a real feel way. One cannot help but root for each and every character.
Love the positivity and growth in this series. Makes one feel like no matter the age, it's never too late to go out and live your best life.
Teen Wolf: The Movie (2023)
Nastalgic, brings back good memories
I enjoyed the movie, it was very nastalgic seeing most of the gang back together.
They kept the story going at a fairly good pace, although some scenes were a bit unnecessary, esp closer to the end.
It was a good choice for the villain, but I do feel that as this villain played a big part of Stiles story previously, he should've been the one to come back and figure out how to beat him.
He had the most experience with the villain, in the other plain.. There was so much they could've done with that as part of the storyline.
I love how all (except one, lol) of the actors still looked the same. Made me feel like not much time passed since the last episode, and we could pick up where we left off. They closed the time gaps quite nicely..
Also liked that they gave clear explanations for things and made some of the characters stronger in their powers, more than they did in the series. It was nice to see Lidia and Scott rising to the occasion when it came to using their powers.
All the actors brought their A-game.
All in all, they did a good job of making me feel that the series should make its way back to tv..
Wednesday (2022)
Netflix redeeming itself, coming to take back its Crown!
Wow, what a wonderful adaptation from the original movies.
This series strikes a wonderful balance between the dark gritty feel of the Netflix Sabrina series, and the world of wonder, colour and delight from the first Harry Potter movie.
All the actors do really well in bringing their characters to life. Needless to say, Jenna Ortega brought her A game and did an amazing job.
Took a bit of time to get used to the way they depicted Wednesdays parents. I know they're based on the original comic but I was expecting to see the flamboyant Gomaz and expressionless like Morticia Adams. But I must say that the quirky warmth plays well to Catherine Zeta-Jones. She did a good job portraying the loving but complicated relationship between a mother and a teen.
Luis Guzmans' portrayal of Gomez was good as well, the character grew on me especially after I watched the series for a 2nd time (it's that good).
The only thing I feel could've been done better was the Hyde monster.
I hope the series comes out with a second season, and they keep it true to this first season, slightly bright and maintaining the development of All the characters and storylines.
Disenchanted (2022)
First half was Great..
The first half of the movie stood true to the original. The colors, costumes, music, storyline was beautifully made executed. A true Disney movie Magic feel.
The second half became mediocre. Storylines that just didn't make sense - such as Robert's (Patrik Dempseys) change in profession. Pips change was okay, not that great.
Giselles voice changing, when her personality changes, is just too different in some places.
Idina brings her A game as always, with her amazing pipes. My young niece actually said to me, she sounds just like Elsa, lol ;)
But, there were some unnecessary musical pieces, that the movie just didn't need or could've been done differently. One being, when Giselle approaches the Queen initially, that piece of song n dance was just too long, or perhaps it was just shot incorrectly..
Most of the characters look like the original movie, which was really great to see. I understand Roberts character has gotten older, but they could've at least dyed Patrick Dempseys hair for this movie.
I just can't put my finger on why I wasn't a fan of the Queens character...
All in all, the movie was enjoyable. I'd watch it again.
Once Upon a Time (2011)
It's just a really great Feel Good type of show..
I love watching this show, especially when I just need a little escape from the hustle and bustle of my everyday busy life.
It's like my secret indulgence that gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling and has become a staple during my quality time ..
The storylines are well thought out and somehow most of the characters end up having their stories successfully completed, with little lost narratives.
This is what makes this series so watchable. Storylines are finished nicely.
Needless to say, I've only watched up until season 6, in fear that season 7 will tarnish the wonderful ending of the prev season. Hence I'm not sure whether I will delve in the last season, lol..
The costumes are really good, especially on the magic side of things.. Cudos to the costume designers and wardrobe department. They really did a great job.
The actors and actresses really bring their all to show the magic of Storybrooke to viewers. I'd say they successfully succeeded.
This series give me a sense of nostalgia with exciting modern twists all at the same time.. It's really wonderful.
The Mummy (2017)
It's Good, don't compare it to previous versions
Somehow, each time I watch this movie, the more and more I like it.
Perhaps, when I initially watched it, I compared it too much to the light hearted versions of the movies I grew up with. The Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz franchise, packed with quirky jokes, delightful romantism, valiant heroes heroines, big cinematics and even bigger bolder music notes swirling all over..
There is just no comparison. Both are unique in their own ways.
Of course, the Tom Cruise version being darker version. But in saying that, the story line is good, but I think it was sped up a bit too much from the 2nd half of the film. It needed about another 30 to 40 minutes, just to delve a bit deeper into the multiple story lines happening.
For example, the Jackel and Hyde story should've been given more air time to develop a bit more, or should just not have been in it at all. I get that they were trying to open up the storyline for the next film, but it just felt rushed.
The acting was good. Tom, as usual, brought his A game. Kicking ass, getting his ass kicked, swooping in with his loveable charms and charisma..
Annabelle was okay.
But, Sofia Boutella! She did an amazing job. Given that her character was draped in grey rags in most of the movie, she pulled it off flawlessly. She was strong, confident and built up her character very well.
All in all this was a good film, I hope they decide to one day bring the sequel out someday. There is so much potential to build on from this first movie. And having another movie with Tom in will always be enjoyable..
Purple Hearts (2022)
A real feel good kinda movie
Purple Hearts turned out to be better than I thought it would be.
There was so much in terms of storylines, from different aspects of their lives.. But it was laid out so nicely that it didn't feel over whelming..
I enjoyed both character developments.
The music was really written and performed well. The female lead has a voice with a cool raspyness that fitted perfectly in the movie.
The main characters' did a stellar job with their performances. Hope to see more of them in other movies.
Halftime (2022)
JLo - Bringing light to injustice..
Hats off to JLo🎊🎉
This is such a good documentary!
It opens your eyes to see and realise how hard she has been working over the years.
There have been so many road blocks and injustices towards JLo, it's crazy. But she has amazing resilience and this documentary highlights this so well.
I have a new found respect for her. She is an amazing, strong woman and the world needs to take note.
We'll done JLo!
The Kardashians (2022)
Update: Season 3 - starting to enjoy the show again
Updated review: Season 3
The show is starting to get good again.
Two episodes into the latest season and I am really enjoying it again.
The conversations seem more real and not constrained as in season 2. Everyone is participating and the ladies are focused on their kids, growing & developing their businesses/ empires, taking care of themselves & learning new things..
There is a refreshed feel or vibe in the first two episodes. Mama Kris looks good, all the sisters look good and it's also nice seeing Scott back in the episodes looking good too.
Can't wait to watch the rest of season 3.
Previous review Season 1: Episode 7 should've been the First episode
On episode 7 now. And wow!
It's like the show did a 180.
Finally! There's a lot more real moments..
Each sister is going through a new chapter in their lives and they are taking the the viewers along on for the ride.
The mistake with the first few episodes was that it felt too busy and distant...
Episode 7 should've been episode 1, and thereafter they could've done the whole SNL & Met Gala events.
In this one episode you see Kim going to her clothing storage warehouse, where she has all her outfits worn over the years. For me it was cool to see that they don't just get rid of things, as I always wondered how do they keep their houses so minimalist. She also talks about being more in control of her life n style and understanding who she is and what she wants.
Kris and Kylie go shopping and it's fun to watch them enjoying buying groceries and going to the car wash. There are constraints in life they also have - it makes them more relatable. Kris trying to figure out the pay point reminded me of my mom, lol..
Khloe showed her home, and her pantry and closet is OMG!! She should really consider doing a full series showing her tips n tricks to organizing - step by step.. She is so excited about moving in.
There are so many moments in this episode that you can't help but smile.. Such as when Mario tells Kris not to worry, she'll still get her 10%, lol.. And Kris saying he is her manager.. Such good friendly banter.
Kris' chat with Kendall was also good. Suggesting Kendall should have a baby, Kendall says she's not ready now. Kris phones her obgyn and they chat about freezing eggs and how when the younger the better.. Wish I had someone could've informed about this to me when I was younger..
They also show the journey with Kourtney re getting pregnant. She and Travis do some alternative treatments and that was also so cool to see. She has happiness that just beams from within. She also warns Travis that her hormones are going up and down. He must be ready for it... Lol.. But his response was so sweet. They make a good couple.
This episode had so much happening but it was refreshing. Makes me excited for the rest of the series.
Firestarter (2022)
Had so much Potential to be Great!
*Spoiler Alert*
This movie could've been Amazing..
I understand this is based on a novel and is the 2nd movie adaptation of the book, but there was so much room to make the storyline better.
For millenials' like me (and Gen Z's) who have never read the book nor seen the first movie (I was born in 1984 :) it was like seeing it with fresh eyes.
I liked the 'Stranger Things' feel of the movie, even the undertones of 'Carrie' was good.
But as the movie went along, it felt like it was being rushed with half thought out scenes - such as Charlie sitting in the forest for what felt like a short time and miraculously honing in on her skills quickly by boiling river water and burning some leaves and sticks.
There could've been more background story on how the parents got there powers instead of the 5 minute intro.
Also what was with the phrase that the mother tells the government hired assassin guy, who then says the same phrase to the Head of the government facility - when you meet her then you will see..(something to that tune). But no later direction to its meaning.
The ending was so badly done, with credits rolling as the assassin guy carries Charlie away on the beach... I mean, are you serious with that ending!?
There was so much opportunity for a plot twist at the end - instead they could've ended by zooming out of the fathers eyes to the scene where they all in the kitchen as he asks who wants pancakes at the beginning of the film. There he suggests that they do what the mother said and they'll start teaching Charlie how to manage her powers instead of suppressing it. Everybody is happy with the idea and it ends on a lighter note with the potential for a sequel... Maybe.
Zac Efron played Andy, the father, really well. He's showing he's really bringing his all to playing different roles. This was a more matured role that needed to strike the right balance between a father figure, protector and person with his own internal conflicts with his supernatural side. Zac did this and made it look effortless and natural..
Ryan Armstrong also did a good job with the character of Charlie McGee. It's a pity the movie was too short and rushed to see her full potential.
Bridgerton (2020)
Beautiful
Could not wait to binge season 2.
Let me say, visually and musically it did not disappoint. The costumes were beautiful, the settings were magnificent, the music composition was excellent.
I love how the actors are from different ethnicities and how the integration into the storylines have a a natural feel. It is so refreshing, I wish more movies and series could do this.
I did find the story between the main couple to be a bit lagging. Wish they took the route of the younger sister forgiving her older sister, and being supportive a lot earlier in the series, maybe at episode 7. The love romance felt a bit rushed at the end.
I liked that their were multiple storylines, and more character development occurred. But sometimes it became a bit slow and some scenes were just unnecessary, especially during the last 3 episodes.
All in all, the series is a like a luxury indulgence, something to treat yourself to once in a while...
