Road House (2024)
A respectful remake
I genuinely wanted to dislike this movie so much! The original film from the 80s is such a lightning-in-a-bottle kind of flick, and to see a remake talked about made me a little annoyed that it would be considered. However, after watching this remake I have to say I am truly impressed with what they did. Let's all take a moment to acknowledge that the original Road House film wasn't aiming to be some high-end film with a deep message-it was fighting, sex appeal, and over-the-top action. The newer adaptation has no mixed perception about itself as well; this film knows what it is and embraces the simplicity of the original (in the best way possible). I think if you are a fan of the original but can have an open mind you will enjoy it. It's stupid, it's over the top, it's Road House, and that's what the film was meant to originally embrace. Enjoy the ride, and don't gatekeep.
Theater Camp (2023)
A movie with heart!
This is an absolute gem of a movie, and one that you need to see for 2023! As someone who didn't grow up in theater even I can still appreciate what they are doing. It's absolutely a mix of hilarity and warmth making a love letter for those who appreciate theater. The script follows a struggling summer camp of thespians (adults and children) putting their best foot forward, and it absolutely succeeds in my opinion. All all of the characters in this feel fleshed out pretty well, and bring depth to the roles that they play. My hats off to the children who are clearly just absolute powerhouses in their own right. Perhaps a little niche for some, but if regardless if you have a background in theater or not It's hard not to see the love that this film was created with. Check it out!
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
More interested in its message than its story.
If I could envision the room when this movie was being pitched it would be a bunch of hipsters sitting in LA with tight jeans, carhartt beanies, and little interest in a story, but more so a message on how disenfranchised various groups are. This movie sucks, just to be blunt. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre had so much atmosphere about it that you felt the suspense. In this installment I genuinely couldn't care less about the characters because frankly the story doesn't give me a good reason to care for them. They are a diverse group of influnecers coming to the middle of nowhere texas to get people interested in food? The only thing that was massacred here was the name of the franchise, and thats who I feel bad for. Honestly skip it if you are hoping for something even close to the original.
Cry Macho (2021)
Awesome concept, mediocre execution
Currently this film sits at a mid 6 which frankly I think is fair for the film. I want to make sure people who read this understand this isn't a bad film, just a bit of a missed opportunity. The concept is solid with a coming of age story brought to us by a seasoned older cowboy (Clint Eastwood) and young delinquent (Eduardo Minett). Where the story misses for me personally is the execution-its so freaking hammy! Don't get me wrong this film isn't horrible, but honestly if anyone says this film is fantastic, or Eastwood at his best, ask yourself one question. If you didn't know this was a Clint Eastwood film would you think so highly of it? My guess is not so much.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
Entertaining but forgettable
I wanted to love this movie so much, especially with the opening scene of our protagonist and his friend attempting to catch a wild pokemon. This immediately took me back to my childhood playing the original games on gameboy. From here the movie personally fell a little flat for me. I dislike super long expositions about every single little critique (after all it's a fictitious movie about pokemon), but I just wish they would have went more the direction of the original pokemon games, or cartoon series. I was genuinely way more curious about the pokemon world than the narrative of a lost father. I'll admit I haven't played the detective Pikachu game, so on that front I can't say much. Don't get me wrong, it's an enjoyable movie, just not one I'll care to rehash and end up buying. Overall good start to a hopefully continuing world.
Suspiria (2018)
A film not meant for everybody
This is my very first review on IMDB, but I feel this film merits recognition. First off, let me say this film is not for everyone (the guy who I fist bumped when we started the film walked out). Frankly, if we are being honest this is a bit of a niche film. Howeverly it is a gorgeous piece of cinema worth give attention to.
The cinematography is gorgeous in every shot, and at times will honestly make you questionin what era the film was made in. The socre is somber and a great match with the the bleak tone constructed by Guadagnino. The acting is very well done, and stands strong throughout the film. I personally don't want to give the plot away, or any more information beyond what I have said.
I for the life of me can't understand why fans of the original dislike this piece! If you love the uniqueness of the original Suspiria, and are willing to experience a new interpretation of the film I genuinely think you'll have a blast!
