Eye of the Needle (1981)
What a great movie!!
I write this the day after Donald Sutherland passing. I watched this movie to remember what a great actor he was. This was the perfect vehicle. Great performance from Sutherland, and from the other actors as well. Gripping story, fine performances - war/murder/mystery/romance all in one great offering. Eye of the Needle must be one of his best movies and despite the interesting accent, Sutherland demonstrates the artistic skills he has that have been recognised and praised by his peers. Can't understand why he never got an acting Oscar. Enjoy this movie as a quality drama with a fine cast, especially the late, great Donald Sutherland!
Alexander: The Making of a God (2024)
So much missing!!
Disappointing series that focuses on Alexanders battles. Sure it was fun to watch but so many inaccuracies and so many battles. Alexander's contribution to the world was not primarily warfare but the tremendous Hellenisation that still influences our world today. He was a scholar as much as a warrior. The Greek philosophy and way of thought is still prevelant today. The influence of Greek language changed the world and the religious ideas influenced Judaism and the soon to emerge Christianity. I was especially disappointed in the featured historians who seemed to just say what the producers wanted. Could have been so much better, not just a action movie style series.
Madre de alquiler (2023)
Well worth watching
This is a long series - 24 episodes. I have read a number of reviews here and acknowledge some of the weaknesses - not well known actors, some scripting and storyline difficulties etc. However, this series is well worth watching. Obviously some reviewers have NOT watched the series - the plot does NOT talk about identical twins, rather it is dizygotic pregnancy (look it up!!). Here the story touches on issues such as racism and prejudice in Mexico, the role of indigenous persons, power and abuse by the elite, indigenous culture, sexual identity, class distinction, greed and many other classic themes. And it does so very well. I agree, it is probably too long and could be shortened, but 'The Surrogacy' is well worth watching.
The War of the Worlds (2019)
Could have been so much better
Set at the time it was written, this 3 part series began well and showed some promise. Episode 1 set the scene well, but the next two were disappointing, leading to a complete fizzle by the end. Some good acting but overtaken by poor script, modern philosophical rambling and ridiculous ending. So much potential, but such a poor resolution.
Mother/Android (2021)
Seen better, seen worse
Moretz does well in this suspenceful sci-fi thriller. Many gave this a poor review but I thought was quite good. Imaginative and quirky it did enough to keep me watching. Cast were ok, Moretz and Castillo were standouts. Twists in the plot were effective and added to the interest. Not a classic, but well worth watching.
I Am Legend (2007)
Could be better
Having recently read the book, I rewatched this movie. It is not a bad movie but WHY do screenwriters insist on changing so much of the book? The novel would be a great screenplay as it is written. Sure, see the movie and enjoy it, but the read the novel and think on what might have been.
Damnation (2017)
Why O why, only 1 series?
This is an excellent, intelligent series that a thinking person can enjoy. I came to Damnation late and it is so much better than the usual rubbishy that seems to have endless series. Would love to see more. One of the best I have seen in years.
Left Behind (2014)
Bring out the bias!
Nothing like a religious movie to bring out the bias and prejudice of the movie going public! 'Left Behind' certainly does that from a glance at these reviews. The premillennialist Christians think it was wonderful, the atheists think it is rubbish. It certainly is not a 9 or 10, but it is not a 1 or 2 either. Sure, it is preachy, a bit stilted but it does have some effective editing and is is certainly not Nichols Cage's worst movie. There are moments of good acting from the lesser known actors and moments of cheesiness as well. Could I suggest that viewers should shelve their pro or anti Christian bias and sit back and enjoy the movie as it is - an OK movie that simply tells a story.
