Ava (2020)
Not worth watching
Even a good cast and good performances (especially by Chastain and Malkovich) couldn't save this dreadful script. The lack of continuity of the film made it long and tedious to watch. Unfortunately, this is a miss.
Chungchungirok (2020)
Light, realistic, wholesome and well acted!
I'm relatively new to SK dramas but, saved for a few, most dramas I've seen were incredibly unrealistic, overtly dramatic, and had exaggerated acting, which made me want to stop with the genre altogether! In that respect Record of youth is a breath of fresh air, it realistically depicts the trials and tribulations of young people with family, friendship, romantic relationships and work.
The cast is great, the outfits are on point, and the filming is very good!
They've really well represented the issues young people are faced with in SK, especially, as is the case of the three lead characters, when they are unwilling to compromise on their values.
In my opinion, they've also perfectly depicted how a new romance might unfold, how two individuals get more confortable with each other, how they learn about each other, how they try to support one another, etc. (a cute example of that is when they go to the movies really early because she has work and cannot do another time).
I've been surprised to read that people think the lead actors do not have chemistry, I wholeheartedly disagree, it might not be as intense as in other SK dramas, but they definitely have it, and I love how the romance does not overpower everything else in the series.
One of the best thing about the series for me is the fact that they have touched on many of the issues prevalent in SK society, i.e. star status, online bullying, the press' unaccountability, family and social pressure, toxic work environments, access to education, compulsory military service, etc.
I think people more used to fast-paced dramas with dramatic events and revelations every minute might not enjoy this one, but if you're looking for a cozy, light and realistic drama, this is definitely the one!
Rebecca (2020)
Mixed review
Having read the novel, but not watched the Hitchcock adaptation, I came to watch this adaptation with quite an open mind, hoping only to find the suspense key to the book.
Although, there were some tense and intense moments throughout the film, I was unable to be captivated by the movie, for the romantic/calm moments were done in a way that it became easy to not pay attention to them.
On a positive note, Kristin Scott Thomas was absolutely mesmerizing in her role as Mrs Danvers, and Armie Hammer was very good as well (although perhaps unfortunately directed to act too vulnerable at times for the character). I was a bit disappointed by Lily James's performance, because although she had a few good moments, I found at times her movements and expressions to be too exaggerated, often to the point of grotesque. I thought the secondary actors were very well casted.
The score was a great contribution to the movie in my opinion!
The cinematography was mostly good, with great use of colors at times, unfortunately there were times where it was a bit dull.
I also felt the ending was rushed and fragmented, with the last minutes of the movie being quite disappointing.
The Royal House of Windsor (2017)
Interesting first few episodes, but blatantly biased against Diana, the Princess of Wales
The first few episodes were quite interesting, especially with the use of previously undisclosed documents.
However, the Diana-centric episodes were blatantly biased, and absolutely negative towards the late Princess of Wales.
Mentioning that her and the Prince of Wales were mismatched is alright, and in my opinion truthful, but describing her as absolutely uneducated, almost to the point of stupidity, and then characterizing her as a willing troublemaker to the Crown, is absolutely shameful.
Such shame should be extended to the Windsor family, if they were involved in the matter.
Furthermore, the constant comparison of the Prince and Princess of Wales to Edwards the 8th were absolutely unnecessary in my opinion.
Finding Your Feet (2017)
Absolutely enchanting !
This British film is absolutely enchanting, if you have the occasion watch it !
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018)
Marvelous film
A rare exception in my case but I had not read the book first, and yet this film felt like reading a book, a great book for that matter.
The cinematography and acting is simply marvelous. A special mention for Penelope Wilton's performance, she's astounding !
Go see it if you have the opportunity !
The Royals (2013)
Poor quality series on the royal British family
Barr a few interviewees, the series is of a very poor quality.
Most interviewees are of no interest whatsoever, and even more so are quite evidently publicity mongers.
There are far more interesting documentaries on the royal British family.
Assassin's Creed (2016)
All in all, it was pretty good, Cotillard's character was useless
First of all, the scenes depicting Granada and Sevilla were full blown amazing. The fighting scenes were also particularly well shot, with the camera following the action or panning out at the right time.
Michael Fassbender performance was quite good, you could see throughout the film the shift of his persona and mind towards the one of an assassin. The "crazy singing" scene, although not particularly interesting, was well acted by Fassbender.
Let me just say that I usually love Marion Cotillard, I think she can be an amazing actress, and she was quite good in this movie, the problem is with her character. Cotillard's character was of no value to the film, her scenes were so useless that the movie would have been quite the same without them, and in fact it would have been better if her character wasn't part of this movie. Maybe they could have introduced it at the end or in the next movie...
Aloha (2015)
All over the place !
This movie was just all over the place, and not in a good way !
I'm not a movie connoisseur, so I can't speak with really elaborate terms, this is my very simple review.
If, this was meant as a simple rom-com, this was almost a complete fail. The acting wasn't the big problem, the actors delivered good performances, but even they seemed to not know what the movie was about, what they were saying...
This was just plain awkward, it had the settings of a rom-com, but I think it tried really hard to not be limited to that, and failed spectacularly !
Special mention for Emma Stone, she was the best actor in this picture.
