The Predator (2018)
Predator 2018: The worst, the weakest and forgettable film in the entire Predator franchise.
The film is a big mess from the start to end. You expect something big only to make you question in the end as to why you didn´t watch a better movie during those 107 minutes instead of watching Predator 2018?
I don´t know how director/writer Shane Black, the writer of Lethal weapon and the director of iron Man 3, was able to ruin the franchise of the predator. It´s even worse when he was also a script contributor and actor in the original predator of 1987 which starred starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
**The story is confusing; please tell if it even makes sense (SPOILER ALERT):
A soldier grabs some predator technology, while in another location; a group of scientists have a living predator while in another place the soldier´s son manages to study the predator´s technology. Eventually, the captured predator escapes and goes after his technology that the soldier´s son has. The soldier, along with a group of lunatics and a biologist, armed up and face the predator only to face a bigger and more genetically powerful predator that easily destroys the original and weaker predator. Meanwhile, a government agent and his crew try to also fight the predator, oh and a Predator dog tags along the journey... I wish I was making this up.
The whole characters eventually face the powerful genetically predator with everyone dying during the battle except for the soldier, his son and the biologist. After defeating the predator, the soldier and his son are working in a science lab and have basically managed to acquire predator technology. End of story.
So, what are the 5 flaws of this film that the three previous films didn´t have:
5. MUSIC: Unlike the three films that had a soundtrack that rightfully played for the tone of each scene, Shane´s film just feels like a mess. The composer, Henry Jackman, has his talented gift for creating music heavily wasted in this film. Jackman has previously composed music for films like Kick-Ass, Captain Philips, Kong: Skull Island, X-Men, Captain America, the list just goes on. But in predator 2018, director Shane just didn´t know how to use his talented music for the predator film. The soundtrack is chaotic as it doesn't match up to any tone of each scene. It´s like throwing any random music to each scene, while knowing that it's a big mistake but still going for it while hoping that the audience won´t notice it.
4. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: The reason I didn't name their names is because none of the characters of this film are important, they are completely forgettable. Some are generic, some are bland, some are just incredibly silly or incompetent and some are just there because why not. None of them feel like a worthy challenge for the predator and every character is just giving little to no introduction. Literally, none of them serve any importance to the plot so why even introduce to them to the plot?
3. DIALOGUE: The dialogues of the past Predator films were not there to be an afterthought; it was there for a purpose. The dialogues form the previous films were effective and it answered many mysterious questions about the predator as the plot progressed. It gave each character a background story that made them important for the plot. Each character had several goals, the majority to survive, some to gain revenge and a few to gain predator technology. In this film no one has a goal, no one has a background story and no one even cares if they are attacked by the predator. Their goal is just to tag along the plot as they are taken down one by one by the predator.
2. ACTION: The three previous films knew how to show the genre of action which is what the franchise is about. The action is based on battling the predator with not only weapons but also with clever tactics. There was blood but never too explicit to make you vomit. Predator 2018 just tries to be like "Alien vs Predator: Requiem (2007)," show as much gore and blood in the film that it will make the audience sick enough to no longer care about the film. It's even more insulting when this film tries to be funny which fails miserably in the humor. Reminder, the predator franchise was never a comedy film. To top it all off, the action is poorly directed with everything being too dark that you can´t even see the action. Again, just like "Alien vs Predator: Requiem (2007)."
1. PLOT: The three previous films had one story that introduced all of the characters that where going to encounter the predator. In this 2018 film, the plot is CHAOTIC because there is way TOO MANY STORIES HAPPENING AT ONCE. None of the different stories matter and instead of helping the plot, they just make the plot more confusing, dull, uninteresting and BORING. The straw that broke the camel´s back in this film is that the predator has not arrived to earth to hunt humans for sport. Yeah, unlike the previous films that was basically what the predator was about, which was to hunt humans for sport, this 2018 film just throws it out the window thus completely distancing itself from the predator franchise. Really? Predators using Human DNA to improve themselves just to take over the world even though their much more advance in everything than the human world?
In the end "Predator 2018" is like the nail to the coffin to the Predator franchise just like "Jaws 4." That is unless another future director can come and revive the Predator franchise by completely removing any continuity of the film, "Predator (2018)." The predator 1987 was classic, the predator 1990 and 2010 where entertaining, not classical but still entertaining while Predator 2018 was insulting to the Predator franchise, boring, forgettable and literally the weakest of the Predator franchise. In end after 8 long years of waiting for the Predator sequel, I expected something big from this 2018 film, but all I got was a one ugly motherf**g film. Note: Get to the chopper and fly as far away as you can from "the predator (2018)."
Logan (2017)
This is not a Marvel film, this is not a superhero film this is a SOAP OPERA!
When you think of Marvel and X-men, what comes to your mind is entertainment and action. However, in this film its main focus is more about being sentimental. While the action, the acting and the connection of the characters is the best from this film, it is the way that the characters are written which makes it disappointing.
The plot is that Logan/Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman) goes on a journey reluctantly to help a mutant girl named Laura (who is Wolverine's daughter), to find her other mutant friends who are chased by a group composed of cyborg enforces called, "The Reavers" along with their cyborg leader named, Donald Pierce (played by Robert Holbrook).
Now the plot sounds simple and entertaining but it is the mishandling of the X-men hero characters that ruins the plot along with its message about the elderly people and its questionable conclusion. First of all, Logan/Wolverine is shown to be a drunken X-men character who works as a chauffeur while suffering a disease that is making him weak because of the adamantium that was fused to his bones. We are never told how he ended up in this situation but you just have to accept it. Also, Professor Xavier (played by Patrick Stewart) still has his power of telepathy but because he is old, he suffers from seizures and cannot recognize Wolverine unless he takes his medicine although Xavier does state that he is aware of his telepathic power.
Now unlike the comic, "The Reavers" have no interest in destroying the X-men mutant but rather a group of mutant children who have superpowers but have escaped (Note: In this film, the mutant children want to cross the border from Mexico to the U.S. for a new opportunity of life). Inadvertently, Wolverine is caught in the middle of the chase.
The first conflict that I had is that during the film, Wolverine, Professor Xavier and Laura are given a shelter by a kind family called, the Munsons. Despite the family's good deed and kindness, the Munsons are slaughtered by X-24 (a clone of Wolverine who works for the antagonists) who is sent to capture Laura. At this point it shows you that being good and kind means death according to the message of this film (Logan). To add insult to injury, Professor Xavier, the world's most powerful telepath is easily killed by X-24 because he is old and old people suck (based on the message that this film, Logan, is giving).
After Wolverine escapes with Laura and they find the mutant children, "The Reavers" along with X-24 arrive but they are defeated by the mutant children and Wolverine. During the fight against X-24, Wolverine is brutally impaled onto a tree stump. Luckily Wolverine survives his injury, and knowing that the mutant children have no guidance of what is good and justice while also being aware that the mutant children were only taught to destroy humanity, he decides to take them under his guide were he establishes a private school like Xavier for the mutant children
yeah that doesn't happen.
Instead after being impaled onto a tree stump, Wolverine dies from his wounds because well, he is old and old people suck (based on the message of this film). The children bury him and continue their journey as the credits roll but there is one problem
THIS MUTANT CHILDREN ARE GOING TO END UP JUST LIKE THE REAVERS! With no guidance of what is right and justice, and with only the teachings that they were taught which is to destroy humanity, this mutant kids will actually become a new villainous group on the Marvel world of this film. Special criticism is also given to the fact that there is not the traditional Marvel post-credits scene and Stan Lee does not make a cameo appearance.
In conclusion, this 2017 film, "Logan," gives the feeling that its director James Mangold (who also directed the 2013 film, Wolverine), its writers and its producers, hate life, they hate the Marvel heroes (Wolverine and Professor Xavier) and they have no respect for the elderly people as they see them as useless without taking note that the elderly people have a greater knowledge and that the youth can learn from them. The whole film just mocks Wolverine and Professor Xavier for being too old and it does not take note of their achievements as a hero or the great power and knowledge that they poses. Instead The message of this film is that no matter what accomplishments you've done in the past and no matter if you have done the right thing or if you are a hero, it is pointless because that was in the past. As a result, it means that since you are old, you suck and are no longer needed according to this film's message.
If you are a fan of X-men, Marvel and Wolverine, then this movie is highly not recommendable for you. But if you like Soap opera and you are a fan of Hugh Jackman, then this film is for you.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)
Resident Evil 6: The FORGETTABLE chapter
With a film called the final chapter, you definitely expect it to end in a memorable note, but clearly this film only made its chapter end in a forgettable note.
This film is written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson (who has been involved in all the Resident Evil film series) and it has the same producers from almost all the Resident Evil film series, Paul W. S. Anderson, Jeremy Bolt, Robert Kulzer, Samuel Hadida
so what went wrong. The plot of the film is that Alice (played by Milla Jovovich) is given a mission by The Red Queen, who tells her that she only has a certain amount of hours to retrieve an antidote (found in The Hive at Raccoon City) which will allow her to eliminate the entire disease that infected the whole planet as well as her (Alice). Now the plot doesn't sound bad, but it's the horrible editing style, the lack of story development and character development that prove to be its mayor downfall.
The plot of the film was way too rushed as everything (in terms of fight scenes, chase and solutions) happen in a blink of an eye. The editor, Niven Howie, who has edited in the previous three Resident Evil films should have never being replaced in this film. Doobie White, who is the editor of this film, is really one of the worst editors I have ever seen. The film was terribly edited as multiple scenes are showed in just one second. It was like if in 1 second you would see 5 different clips from different camera angles changing in a rush which actually hurts the eyes. This editing style happens in the entirety of this film which causes the story to become forgetful.
Now I believe that the producers hired the directors of "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem," because in the whole entire time of the film you can't see anything as it is completely dark. Not even night vision goggles can help you see in the darkness of this film. This gives me the impression that they couldn't afford the lighting so they just shot everything in the dark.
Another important note was that in the past Resident Evil series films, they made a great job in developing the characters, the protagonists and the antagonists. This result allowed the characters' roles to have a purpose in their respective films and to be memorable. However, in this film, the characters are just there to either be zombie lunch or just to become another victim for Alice. They appear for no reason and absolutely have zero character development which makes the entire cast (except Alice) forgettable.
Another huge criticism were the antagonists as they never felt like a real threat towards the story. The main villain, Dr. Alexander Isaacs (played by Iain Glen), was not given a lot of personality or character development and it felt that he was just there because
well he is the bad guy. While, Albert Wesker was another disappointment as they made one of the most iconic characters of the Resident Evil games look more like an extra in this film while also showing him incredibly weak and unmemorable.
The only thing I can give praise for this film is its ending that leaves a small smile to your face and the small handful of references that remind you from the previous Resident Evil films. That's the only positive factor. Then the film is just not worth seeing it or even repeating it, unless you are curious to find YouTube Celebrity, Mathew Santoro, who appears as a zombie.
Ed Wood (1994)
Ed Wood and Bela Lugosi are brought back to LIFE!!
A brilliantly made drama film, that plays impactful with the feelings of the audience. It has no comedy, just a few sparkling of laughs.
The film tells about the biography of the "worst director of all time," Ed Wood (Played by Johnny Depp) and his journey of making films that he believed to be a success. For Wood, you feel sorry for him because the audience knows that each of his films will be considered the worst. However, the acting of the whole cast allows the audience to remain in their seats and hope that a miracle can happen. As an audience, you wish that for only once, one of Wood's films can turn out to be a success. During the scene of the premiere of his film "Plan 9 from Outer Space," is the only moment where the audience can feel some relief as Wood can be seeing that he has accomplished his vision. Unfortunately, we know what the outcome will be.
This drama film is strongly well made that you want every single character to triumph. The acting is brilliant and genuine that you feel what each character is going through. Ed Wood is very optimistic and has high hopes that every film that he makes will be a success.
Martin Landau, who perfectly brings Bela Lugosi back to life, steals the show as his character makes the audience to feel his pain, loneliness, loss of fame and bankruptcy. Nevertheless, Landau's character never loses hope on Wood's films and actually feels grateful to be back in the big screen. If you are a fan of Bela Lugosi or Ed Wood, then this outstanding Tim Burton film, will make you remember them.
Sin otoño, sin primavera (2012)
Camera techniques good, acting descent, Plot...Disappointing
It is good to see an Ecuadorian film trying to be known around to the world. The message that this film is trying to give is to how you can overcome the obstacle and how anyone could achieve happiness. The camera techniques and the shots are good while the acting is descent. The problem is the story and the ending. First problem is that too many stories happen so fast in the beginning that as a viewer it feels confusing as you don't know what is happening or what to follow. As the movie progresses the stories began to make more sense which gives you the illusion that at one point all of this stories will clash together and will make an impact to all the characters
it never happens. There is one story about two girls where the older one watches the young one in a voyeurism style. Then there is another story of the character Martin. There is another story of a student who can't compete with the system so he gives up. There is another story of a drug dealer. Oh yeah, and there is a story about a guy who wants to be free
and another story of a girl who is about to die
and etc. The point is that there is too many stories happening at once and in the end after watching for almost two hours long, they don't have an impact with each other. Once again it uses the same cheap exploitation style like any Latin American film in order to catch the attention of the viewers through the use of drugs, sex, violence, poverty and corruption. The ending felt too rushed and abrupt which gives me the sense that there was no more budget so they had to end it as quickly as possible. The solutions are way too easy to be solved that it felt like if you watched a two hour film of a person trying to open a door and in the final 5 minutes of the film, it was revealed that he had the key in his pocket the whole time and he was aware of that.
Annie (2014)
It's a HARD KNOCK-OUT that leaves the viewers unable to get up after first 10 minutes of the film
Annie, based on a Broadway musical, takes place in the present time, while also displaying several commercialized brands within this film. Quvenzhané Wallis plays the one dimensional character, Annie, who apparently knows the outcome of every scene. She displays no emotion and she treats the luxury lifestyle like if she has been there before. When she discovers that her parents are fake, I expected her to display an emotion of fear and fright because she is being kidnapped. However, she displays a dull attitude because it appears that she knows that she is going to be eventually saved. I am still surprised that she was nominated for a golden globe. Now Cameron Diaz is a big shame as she plays the evil Miss Hannigan. Sadly, her acting looks forced, over the top and exaggerated. C'mon Cameron Diaz you are better than this. Jamie Foxx's acting is OK but is not the best of his acting career. I expected to hear the original songs from composer Charles Strouse and lyricist Martin Charnin, but the music is all auto-tuned which is disappointing for the fans of Annie. Don't waste your time with this movie. Watch the Annie 1999 or the 1982 which are far more better than this 2014 version. The only cool thing of this film was watching Michael J. Fox...for a few seconds. Now if you'll excuse me, I am going to Michael J. Fox if I could borrow his time machine car, DeLorean, to go back in time and stop this Annie 2014 from being made.
Creed (2015)
The legacy of Rocky Balboa still lives and continues.
For the Rocky fans, "Creed" is like the cherry topped in a legendary dessert. Even though the film is 2 hours and 13 minutes, the time is never felt, only the story. We are aware that this film has the same clichés as the previous Rocky's films in terms of preparing for the fight, the main character being the underdog, the opponent being unstoppable and arrogant and in the end the protagonist proving himself to be a worthy opponent. This is what Rocky is all about.
The story is perfectly constructed in reminding us the previous Rocky films and also bringing Rocky Balboa as a victorious survivor. Sylvester Stallone gives the best acting performance I have ever seen in any of his films.
The match scenes are well constructed in terms of editing and camera angles. The audience feel the intensity of each punch that is delivered to a character. The final boxing match reminded me of the boxing scene in Stanley Kubrick's 1955 film, "Killer's Kiss."
Rocky fans will not be disappointed by this film as the legacy of Rocky Balboa still lives and continues.
The Boy Next Door (2015)
Let's Get Loud: THIS MOVIE SUCK!
This film borrows every cliché and stereotype of other films that follow the same pattern but with a different style. Because all the clichés are easy to be spotted, the audience can easily expect the predictable which completely destroys the suspense and the foreshadowing. I think the ONLY reason it made money was because of the sex scenes.
The film feels rushed, with no character development or any chemistry being created between all the cast. Most of the characters just show up in some scenes and then disappear without affecting the plot; maybe they are just here for a quick paycheck. I blame it on the script which had so many gap holes that left so many questions unanswered.
The acting is horrendous especially Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Guzman's acting. Guzman is supposed to give a reliable impression of a character with psychological problems, but he fails to deliver that performance. Jennifer Lopez fails to connect with her character. In some scenes she remembers to play as her character but in the majority of this film she forgets to act. AS A RESULT, Lopez proved, in this film, why she needs to WIN the golden raspberry award. In the 2002 film, Enough, she displayed a far better performance than here.
I do not recommend this movie unless you are a big fan of Jennifer Lopez, but I warned you, you will be disappointed. Now lets hear J. Lo's #1 song: LET'S GET LOUD THIS MOVIE SUCKS!
Machete Kills (2013)
So many CAMEOS so LITTLE IMPACT
This film has no storyline it just creates anything along its way. There are too many cameos and so little impact from those cameos. The whole story looks more like it was promoting its sequel of space but instead off giving us a 2 minute trailer we have to sit and look at a 2 hour trailer. Lady gaga probably didn't have any concert tours so she just went ahead with this film. The biggest disappointed was Mel Gibson because he can act far better than this. This is the first time that I see Mel Gibson given his worst character performance ever. I guess he must have taken acting lessons from Salma Hayek. The films just rips- offs other films and is just unable to come up with own story. Even worse, the whole film focuses entirely in a missile that is going to be blasted off if the heart of Mendez stops beating. Machete does everything to protect the heart and just near the final minutes of the movie, the heart is destroyed making all the sacrifice completely pointless. I will give credit to the actor, Marko Zaror, who has the most memorable role. Sadly, even Machete is rarely used in the film and gets lost because of so many story lines happening at the same time. If you already saw the first Machete film then just repeat it again. Trust me its better than this one.
