The Batman (2022)
Bit Boring, Bit Emo
It felt really slow and didn't really add anything to the batman story.
Still there was some good action. But fights were a bit oldschool with no real good fighting techniques. Batman sort of just wins. Sometimes when he gets shot he falls over, sometimes he just walks through a hail of bullets.... wish they did something more epic.
The constant emo vibe from batman/bruce wayne annoyed me. It kind of felt off. Sort of didn't really feel like "batman".
The other actors were pretty good, and I liked the darkness of the film but still could have been a bit more edgy.
I still think it's worth watching, but it is kind of mediocre.
The Peripheral (2022)
Good BUT....
This is great sci fi, I really enjoyed the whole premise and how it's playing out. The good stuff really outweighs the really sloppy stuff.
So what is sloppy? Well, the Americanized stuff, ie, themes that seem to permeate a lot of American shows...
The "bad" guys are stereotypical bad guys
The "good" guys win gun fights in non realistic ways.
The "feel good" moments of giving people a chance and redemption, the wounded soldier who is still bad ass, etc.
However, overall, the sci fi theme of the show is great, and feels compelling. The bigger mystery of what is going on leaves you wanting to know more.
Whiplash (2014)
Nothing really happens
I really don't get why people are raving about this movie. I watched it because of its high ratings. Seems like an unoriginal story line. I did like the Jazz, but nothing really happens in the story other than contrived drama. The acting was good, and it has some great actors who I have loved in other movies, but there isn't a story, or at least the story seems a bit silly, especially the grand face off at the end. Really no idea why this is getting so highly rated, maybe music students relate to this story better? I dunno, but given other people really like it, I guess it's a movie you need to watch and make your own mind up. For me, this was Meh.
The Man Who Fell to Earth (2022)
Bad Science, but still kind of interesting
The scientific references are really really bad and it just gets worse and worse as the story progresses.... So many scenes really annoyed me because they got it so wrong. Some of the key storyline is just terrible, laughably so.
The overlay of political, social, and philosophical commentary is also not well done.
The script and characters are, again, often badly done.
Having said that, the story is kind of interesting. There is some good special effects. I wish they consulted with some people who understand the science.
Love Life (2020)
Great watch, but the ending was a let down
I really enjoyed the story, Anna Kendrick is just fantastic. But the way they ended it was too..... cliché, really weak story writing, kindda like they didn't have a good idea for how to end it. But still, great watch!
The Terminal List (2022)
Not very original and it was really predictable, but still ok
I quite liked this, but it was really predictable right from episode one. So it was a bit disappointing, especially as they tried to build the "twist", but it was mostly wasted effort.
The story itself is not too original either, wronged special forces dude who then goes and kicks everyones ass, while getting damaged, and un ending amount of close calls. Typical "bad" guys. Etc
I think the whole thing could have been done a lot better, a lot more grittier, a better story, better setup, etc.
Having said all that, it is really watchable, even though I knew roughly how it was going to play out, I enjoyed watching it happen. Chris is a good actor and I think did a good job here. If you enjoy rogue soldier against the world story lines, this is worth a watch, but otherwise you might want to give it a miss.
La Brea (2021)
Some of the worst acting I've seen in a long time
The premise of the series could maybe have worked out ok, but the script and acting are just awful. It's like the whole script is copy pasted snippets from other shows, like if students who really don't know how to write scripts tried to rush a script together because their homework is due tomorrow.
Oddly enough they have enough of a budge for some reasonably special effects, but I have no idea how it got funded in the first place.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Incredibly boring
While I like all these actors, this story just felt weak. A very boring commentary on masculinity I guess. But it feels like an old style of developing characters that ultimately don't feel too realistic and you can feel the story writers push of an agenda. An agenda is fine, but you have to sell it through your characters, and as good as these actors are, they just didn't breathe life into the story.
I can imagine kids having to watch this and write essays on it though. Especially here in NZ.
The Lost Daughter (2021)
Feels like it is going somewhere, but just ends.
I enjoyed the acting and the story that was developing, but, I thought it was going somewhere... it wasn't. I thought the back story was going somewhere, but the back story was the story. The main story was....pointless really nothing happens with it, it was just a way of stringing together flashbacks to the back story. I think, if you are going to watch this, you really need to be aware of this so your expectations are low. The acting was good though. I feel like this movie is designed for English classes at school to study and try and dissect the meaning from it, the commentary on society and being a mother and the symbolism. I feel sorry for the kids who have to write an essay on this movie.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
By second episode, I'm back in Dexter mode
Good stuff, starting to enjoy it. The only thing I don't like is the scenes with the sister, feels really forced and feels like they are only doing it because they could get her to come back, but I think it wrecks it. It only needs dexters inner dialogue.
Away (2020)
Silly and really unrealistic
This series is really badly done. It's really primarily a drama while overlaying a mission to mars on top of it, but they've done it really really badly where the people are incompetent and overly emotional and do stupid things.
This could've been so much better and still had the drama.
Not really worth the watch but some people might like it, so try it, if you like it, cool, but if you don't, don't feel any regrets abandoning it early, you aren't missing anything.
A Billion to One (2017)
Interesting idea, not terribly watchable.
I watched a number episodes (each of which is quite short ~ 15 mins), but the production quality, script, and acting is very low quality. I found the characters quite unrealistic. It's like watching amateur film making, can be intriguing, but you'd have to be in the right mood for it. I gave up in the end as it felt a little too painful to watch.
On a positive note, each episode is short, so if you are curious, you'll quickly find out if it's something you want to watch till the end
Space Force (2020)
Watchable, but only mildly funny
I find the premise for this show Hilarious, and given the actors, it should be really good, but it isn't, it's very average and only mildly funny. It is still watchable, and many of the storylines, if recapped, sound like they should be really funny, but there's something lost in execution.
Given there isn't much in the way of "sitcoms" on netflix, this can fill that role. My suggestion is give it a go, but if it's not doing it for you, don't stress about watching the whole thing.
The I-Land (2019)
Not as bad as people think if you stick with it till the end
This isn't lost.....I know people are comparing it to lost, but this resolves itself much faster and in a better way.
The acting isn't the best (or possibly the writers of the dialogue), but the story is actually pretty good if you see it through to the end. It changes a lot after the first few episodes, and the end is quite a nice little "bonus" twist.
Russian Doll (2019)
I nearly didn't get past the first couple of episodes, but I'm glad I did
I really didn't like what I *thought* this was going to be. I was ready to give up on it, but, I really do like time loop type movies, so I thought I'll stick it out, and I'm glad I did!
It keeps getting better and becomes very binge worthy.
The ending is quite good. I suspect many people are just going to watch the end and completely miss what actually is happening, because if you miss *IT* then it seems like a perfectly ok ending. But....but.....it's not. Something very strange happens and I had to rewind several times to make sense of it, and it's not explained. Possibly this is an opening for a sequel. Or maybe it is just going to be a weird easter egg for the eagle eyed.
If you watched it and didn't think anything too odd was going on and that everything seemed to logically come together. YOU MISSED IT. Rewatch the split screen scenes very carefully.
Ready Player One (2018)
Sadly this lost the essence of the book
Visually this was an ok movie. If you haven't read the book, then this is probably a pretty ok action movie.
But you are being robbed of a much richer story. The movie version is very light on story and more about action sequences.
So, having read the book, this movie is a major disappointment. Everything feels too simplistic, too easy, and too fast.
