Oppenheimer (2023)
Simply could not make it through..
The movie had a visceral tense background score throughout overlayed with a string of cliched conversational widgets that completely betrayed any of implied suspense. It was flat out boring.. repetitive period references that ran out of originality before the first hour was up. The bomb scene was disappointing, a fireworks scene to portray what is a truly stunning phenomenon when viewing any number of existing films of actual nuclear bombs. I learned very little about Oppenheimer the person, as I had hoped. By contrast I found Christopher Nolan's other films like Interstellar to be incredible, because the film style matched the 'epicness' of the subject. There was nothing epic or enthralling here..
The Gambler (2014)
Very good, but requires connection with main character
I found this movie to be very gripping, but like others have said it requires some connection with the main character. For me it was there and I thoroughly enjoyed it (as did my wife who insisted we watch it again a week later).
I really enjoyed the brief table dialogues, one of my favorite succinct quotes being something along the lines of:
Walhberg: (Pushes a 10k stack onto the blackjack table) Dealer: That is $10,000 dollars, are you sure... Walhberg: Are you a financial adviser or a dealer?
Walhbergs character is pretty unique, and borders on unbelievable, but it very consistent and represents very real emotions.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
It is an OK movie
I'm trying to be fair here and rating it 6/10. It's a descent movie, likely worth watching for most people. I watched it a few years back, before I really heard about it, and thought it was OK. I made it through the whole thing, but there were parts that dragged and it's also borderline depressing at times, but has enough humor sprinkled in to get me through. it IS quirky, and I can see how the 'cult classic' gets attached due to the repetition of certain comedic themes throughout. It's definitely not a 10/10 movie, and likewise the 1/10 reviews are basically just a reaction to it's overrating.
I've heard a lot about how great it is since the first time I saw it, and recently just watched it again since it was free on TV. The second time felt just like the first...it was OK.
