Without Remorse (2021)
Tom Must Be Spinning In His Grave
Hollywood has, in general, done pretty well by Tom Clancy. "Red October" tracked very close to the novel as did "Clear and Present Danger". "Patriot Games" didn't deviate too far nor did "Sum of All Fears". "Without Remorse", however, is an utter train wreck of a movie. The novel almost begged for big screen treatment but instead got something worthy of a student film. Not blaming the actors or directors but whoever "adapted" this novel should be taken before a virtual firing squad..What should have been a gripping movie with a poignant backstory turned into a mish-mash of pasted up action scenes with very little coherence. Hopefully somebody will, in the future, pick this up and do justice to the book. I shudder to think what the same screenwriter(s) will do to "Rainbow Six"!
Battlefield Earth (2000)
Terrible Adaptation
I recently watched this for the fourth time trying desperately to see some redeeming factor in it to no avail. The L. Ron Hubbard book was a classic piece og golden age SciFi style but the movie is nothing short of awful. The alien look like refugees from a bad reggae band and the sets are so dark and depressing that much action is lost. This may have been John Travolta's effort to honor Scientology's founder(just my opinion) but he fell far short of doing that. What this is is a dismal not even grade B movie that is not worth 2 hours of your time..
Death Valley Days: The Four Dollar Law Suit (1966)
Classic Strother Martin performance
If you are a fan of Strother Martin be sure to catch this episode if you get a chance. His portrayal of a small town chicken farmer seeking to right a wrong is absolutely classic. His distinctive voice and delivery make his character funny and believable at the same time. The transformation from comic chicken farmer to his courtroom performance is endearing. He is every man versus big business in a role that is a treat for his fans.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
Might Be The Best Of The B Movies
"Killer Klowns from Outer Space" is one of those movies that you either love or hate. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of middle ground for this title. However if you like a weird plot and some really innovative special effects you will get a bang out of this one. The "aliens invade earth and capture townspeople" genre is well represented in the industry but "Killer Klowns" adds a really nice twist to the time worn plot. The movie mixes some really funny scenes (Klowns tracking people with a balloon dog) with some genuine horror and makes the whole come together well. This movie will never make anyone's list in the company of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" or "War of the Worlds" let alone the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises but take it for what it is and you have a truly entertaining B movie that is at least near the top of that list. Grab your popcorn and soda, sit down in the recliner and be prepared to be entertained.
Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
Terrible excuse for a horror movie
Not a real horror movie, just another entry in the "stalk and slash" genre. So predictable with crazed semi-immortal killer and stupid teens who couldn't make a good decision about what cereal to eat for breakfast. All of this adds up to a total waste of two hours. Unfortunately this genre is what passes for "horror" now and true masters such as Hitchcock are forgotten. The problems extend beyond a pitifully weak storyline. In my opinion the acting is definitely sub-par and directing is what one would expect from a first semester film school student. The problem with this movie is basically that it is the first in a long line of sequels and quality doesn't improve. The whole thing has the look of of something that had a film budget of $24.99.
Christmas for a Dollar (2013)
Great Christmas feel-good family movie
This movie will probably never get two thumbs up or great reviews from critics. It has no big name stars, no eye dazzling special effects, no twisted, convoluted plot and no violence or nudity, What it does have is a story of a family that works together under bad circumstances to have a Christmas of love and caring for each other. Yes the plot is a little predictable and much can be guessed ahead of time but don't let that stop you from enjoying this unsung gem. If you want to sit the family down for a couple of hours of popcorn and hot chocolate with everyone from 4 to 94 having a good time without being insulted by foul language or risqué scenes then by all means watch Christmas For A Dollar. it will be worth the time you take and will boost your holiday spirit!
