No One Would Tell (2018)
First one more powerful but remake not as bad as originally thought
IMO the first one (1996 version) was superior to this newer version. The impact more powerful especially during the courtroom scene when the Judge laid into the people for knowing things, for seeing things and yet not saying anything and it was done in a compelling way. The courtroom scene in the newer version lacked severely in comparison to the original version IMO.
With the newer version I liked how the flashbacks were done and it was nice to see Shannen Doherty again. The actress who played the friend did well too. The updates to technology were handled well and accurate in how teens interact with them. The actor who played the boyfriend did pretty well but sometimes it seemed cheesy. Some may not agree but I preferred the way Fred Savage played the boyfriend.
Overall I did think the newer version did well enough, better than I expected when I first saw that a remake was happening though I felt it was more like the same old same old Lifetime-style movies rather than set apart from the movies Lifetime pumps out (and maybe that's just an issue with time difference), and so I rated it a 7 but the 1996 version I rated it a 9 (would really say it's a 9.5 though).
The Babadook (2014)
Was slow, then got better, then got worse
OK where the movie became horrible for me was when she killed her dog. I mean really what on earth did that do for the plot? She could have easily gone insane and the dog escape to a neighbor's house to be cared for until she became lucid again but not they chose to kill the dog. I expect that kind of stuff in horror films tagged as gory but not as psychological at least for me. Or they could have easily left the dog out of the plot entirely.
The pacing of the movie felt off for me. It was just too slow for too long then sped up too fast to the point where I was just left confused. I don't really get why the monster went into the basement on its own volition??
Some of the effects were genuinely scary to me. She did do crazy quite well. The son was too whiny too annoying for too long.
Also it would have served the plot well to have added more of a back story into the monster. All I really got out of it is this book just suddenly appeared and that was about it.
Overall high hopes were dashed when this psychological thriller lost its appeal.
Reviving Ophelia (2010)
Decent movie showing abusive relationship evolution
It's hard to fully develop this type of movie in around 1hr 30mins run time but this movie does a decent enough job. You can see the evolution of an abusive relationship and see how it can be easy to misjudge what's in front of you.
The one thing I would have wished took a bit longer was her to get out of the relationship. While some can get out quickly for most it takes time. I have no doubt that actually reading aloud signs of an abusive relationship can trigger a light bulb but it seems unrealistic that this was just so easy for the girl to say "yup we're done (when she meant it for real) and here's the reason why you're an abuser".
I think the movie does shed some light on the issue though. The girl had her family to watch over her in the sense that they were aware of when her phone was going off, could tell she was distant with her friends, but was still accountable for her well-being. An adult on the other hand would not necessarily have this making the abusive relationship that much more dangerous.
Babysitter's Black Book (2015)
Hoped for a better message
I liked this movie until a little over half-way through (which is why I gave it a 6 rather than lower). As others have mentioned this seemed more about shaming the girls. The parents of the main girl are terrible. First they wipe out her college fund (really late into the game too so she really had no hope of getting the money to go to the college she was hoping for in such a short time) saying how they hope they'll get loans to pay her back and then when she went to drastic measures (not agreeing with what she did though) they say how disappointed in her and that they didn't raise her that way. Unfortunately what this movie tells us is even in this day and age the girl still seems to take the brunt of the stigma.
Elevator Girl (2010)
Cute but not over the top movie
I really liked this movie. It was much more realistic than a lot of other movies on Hallmark-two people who lead two vastly different lives but want to be together. Don't get me wrong I enjoy Hallmark movies a lot but sometimes you want something that seems more real and less over the top cheesy love. The couple had actual arguments I'd imagine really do happen with real couples and it brought home a main premise (or at least what I thought was the main premise) of the story: compromise and realization of one's self. The supporting actors are people who we probably all have in our lives; friends who don't always support, at least initially, who our significant other is and those who realize the one you are with is the one you should be with. I would def.watch this again especially because I personally felt chemistry between the two main leads and I'm a sucker for Lacey Chabert.
The Grim Sleeper (2014)
Well known people acting boosted the movie..at least for me
I'm a sucker for true crime movies. The movie was helped by having some well-known people in it and likely I wouldn't have rated it quite as high if I didn't like those people and their acting in the movie. While this movie came out in 2014 there is a new resolution added to the movie when it aired a few days ago in May 2016. If you can catch it again on LMN it's worth it just to see that or if you can't google it then. I was very surprised that the resolution actually happened only 5 days prior to this movie being aired again so they actually kept up on the story or they decided to re-air it because the new resolution was expected to happen fairly soon. Anyways the movie does show how a community can work together when they feel their voices are finally being heard especially with fresh eyes looking into the issue. All and all a good movie at least compared to many that I watch on LMN (except I keep coming back for more lol).
