Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)
Not what I hoped
My wife read the book and loved it. She described the story and it sounded like a great movie. At the 30 minute mark I was bored. The first hour is very slow. I could have arrived an hour late and still seen enough of the movie to peace together what I had missed.
The acting was good, but the some of the characters reminded me of the Thor movies. I also noticed inconsistencies in the story, and I am big on continuity.
As we left the theatre my wife said, "you didn't like it...." She was correct. For this 51 year old male, I should have seen Elvis.
No Time to Die (2021)
First movie in two years should be a Bond feature
Our feature was scheduled for 4:10. There were 25 minutes of tailors and we left at 7:15.
Like so many 007 movies prior to this one, the recipe of action, really cool stuff, and a sprinkle of love story doesn't disappoint. It is as if there are 3 stories tied together in one movie. Bond takes a bearing and keeps on getting up for the next scene. I thought it had great cinematography and loved the characters.
If you like previous Bond movies, you won't be disappointed. Just know it is a long feature.
Vice (2018)
I thought it was a comedy?
I will preface my review and say, I don't know what a good movie is. My son (18) has me watch highly rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes, and I completely miss what is great. I do love movies, but I just want to smell the popcorn and have a good laugh.
A group of 45 year olds went to see Vice with an expectation it was a comedy. It is not the comedy I was expecting. There is a great cast with some wonderful acting, but the humor is only in parts.
I love how they told the story. Director Paolo Sorrentino crafted a film that was unique in how it portrayed the life of our previous vice president. Considering how many years it portrayed, I do feel it was executed well. Most of his life I did not know, and did some fact checking when I got home.
Leave your political preferences in the car; this film flirts with being a documentary as much as it is an entertaining movie. A friend of mine left mad, but his wife found it to be entertaining. Vice is worth the ticket price, just detach any emotions to the vice president
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Don't let the poor reviews sway your opinion...
The Star Wars franchise covers too many decades for everyone to agree if the story was appropriate. I am NOT one who complicates my movie enjoyment by over
thinking a scripts, cinematography, plots, or whether a character should have been utilized differently. I want to be entertained and Episode VIII is definitely worth seeing in the theatre.
The music that branded the franchise is still powerful and should be heard on theatre sound systems. Really, isn't the experience of the movie what makes us go? Buy a large drink of your choice, and a popcorn, lower your expectations of the script and acting, (if necessary) and sit back and enjoy the film.
I was raised with A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. All of which were truly wonderful by my layman standards. And I found 1, 2, and 3 to be average.
I thought Rogue One was fair at best. But, The Last Jedi is a good movie. I wouldn't mind the franchise coming to an end, but if there is still money to be made, expect Disney to put together a good film for the masses.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Everything you want in a movie
This 45 year old really enjoyed this movie. A must see for all ages. The 1st Guardians did such a good job of character development, and the second did not disappoint. The cast delivers strong performances throughout.
Youl'll find the perfect blend of humor, action, with just a touch of romance. Not too much romance to take away from the story. I appreciate this films underlining of family and friendship, too.
My 16 year old convinced me to attend the first one because of the 80's music. He told me if I didn't like the movie I would like the soundtrack. The good tunes from the 80's continue in this film.
It is pure action from the start. There were times the whole theater erupt in laughter. Guardians is definitely worth the cost of admission.
Get Out (2017)
This is a must see
"Get Out" is one of the best movies I have seen in years. I see many movies and I go to be entertained. "Get Out" was a great blend of humor, thrills, twisted plots, and a few hidden meanings. Don't let the trailer full you, it isn't too scary. Just an occasional eerie moment, but no monsters.
I was pleasantly surprised at how this movie was put together. Sorry, I am not a educated person at seeing qualities and genius in films beyond what appears on the screen. Just know this movie is worth the ticket price. Some of the reviews I read before attending the movie made political references to the story, but they were making more of it that they should have.
Realistically, I don't think I have seen a film like this before.
Fences (2016)
This movie won't be for everyone
Fences is a movie about life. It won't be for everyone. Ten people in our theatre left early.
It is a really strong performance by the whole cast. It may hit home for some people, as it did for me, but others may not want to see their memories brought to the big screen in the way these actors performed. Denzel is a disciplinarian, and he has his rules that only he can understand. Without question, Fences is the best film I have seen in a year.
My wife and I really appreciated seeing this. While I am no expert on cinema, I anticipate Fences winning some awards.
Arrival (2016)
I must quit reading the reviews before seeing movies
I always reference IMDb before seeing a movie. Arrival having an 8.5 rating puts it on a list of really great films. So many positive reviews were the fuel I needed to feel as if this was going to be a great movie. The cast performed well, but this movie is very, very, slow. I kept waiting for the good parts, looked at the time, and realized it had been an hour. My mind started thinking about other things.
You'll have to think real hard to get the plot. My 16 year old loved it; his 45 year old dad regretted buying tickets. Arrival is similar to close encounters of the third kind. I considered leaving the theatre but kept believing in the rating and thinking the movie was going to pick up speed, but it never did. I must not know what a good movie is.
Sisters (2015)
I thought it would be a good movie
Sisters is one of the worst movies I have seen in 10 years. I love big laugh movies, especially those that lean toward just being silly, but this movie was just one bad joke to another. I thought the cast of Tina and Amy, plus a a few funny support people, were enough to carry it, but I was wrong. I was ready to leave 20 minutes in.
Each time my family sees a movie we rate it on a four point scale. My daughter, who is 18, gave Sisters 2.5 stars. My wife and I, 44 and 43, gave it one. There is some modest humor that my teen appreciated, but most jokes left me saying, "that was just bad."
I am a person that goes to a movie to be entertained. Ratings don't usually influence my decision to see a movie, especially a comedy where I know it is going to be dumb humor. For this one, I can't help but leave a review in an effort to save someone else a few bucks.
Save your money and rent this movie when it becomes available.
Tomorrowland (2015)
You'll appreciate more if you have been to Disney World.
My family and I have been to Disney World 8 times. Tomorrowland is like walking into EPCOT and Magic Kingdom. Some of the reviews have been harsh. This movie tells a story about hope and positive change, much like the messages of some of the Disney rides and attractions. The cast does a good job of carrying the story that takes some time to tell. There is enough action and one-liner laughs to entertain most 10+ year olds, not to mention a little Disney Magic. This movie won't be for everyone, but it is not a bad movie. If we didn't have a 17 and 14 year old, my wife and I would not have been in this theater. If you have plans to watch, don't let the bad reviews discourage you. With our kids we have watched many bad movies; if you like Disney World or Disneyland, you'll be satisfied with the experience.
