County Lines (2019)
Nothing new
I really wanted to like this film but it just falls flat in so many ways. The plot is so simple that it is insulting, boy gets blah, meets blah and ends up moderately the same before blah1. I was so genuinely surprised about how hollow the plot was I wasn't sure whether or not it was finished.
A great chance wasted.
It's a Sin (2021)
Incredible
Just. Wow. What an incredible show. It touches on all the emotions and every single one of the characters are unforgettable. It genuinely is one of the best things I have ever watched.
Lucky (2017)
A love letter
An unashamed love letter to Harry Dean Stanton, starring Harry Dean Stanton. And I'm more than OK with that.
Calm with Horses (2019)
Beauitful.
I was in tears for most of this film. An ugly, beautiful tragedy.
I Am Not Okay with This (2020)
Easy viewing
Very watchable with an incredible young cast. I enjoyed it more than I should have. Those who liken it to a 'Carrie' rip off and the rest, I think are missing the point of an unpretentious, 20 minute per episode show. Not everything has to be overladen with complexity and multiple unsustainable narratives. It's just a bit of very well done, throwaway, fun TV.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Overrated, unrealistic and dated.
I was really expecting to enjoy this film much more than I did; more than one friend has it in their top 5 of all time. However I feel like I am 20 years too late. While well acted, the direction is severely lacking and under educated .Each character arc is played out too quickly and we're expected to believe that a 6 month addiction to amphetamines is so severe, it leads to psychosis that only electric shock therapy can cure. One falls in to sex slavery after a few weeks without heroin, another loses an arm and the last is jailed, basically for being black. While addiction is a terrible thing, the main theme of the film seems to be massively under researched and over sensationalised.
Black Sails (2014)
An offence to literature
The only character that is believable is Flint,. For some reason all the rest are motivated by what is considered to be love, most of which is a convenient way to move the story forward. Long John Silver is a joke. He was meant to be the only man that Flint feared and considered at least an equal, yet is portrayed as an opportunist who all of a sudden is respected by peers and enemies alike.
It's just too unbelievable, and not in a good way. Most of the characters are pedestrian yet all pull rabbits from the hat when the plot desires it. It becomes turgid and boring to watch the same old plot rehashed. Oh please oh please will someone just bomb Nassau and be done with it.
Ghostbusters (2016)
Children's Movie
Both the original and this version are children's movies. My 6 year old son prefers this one...
