Shôgun (2024)
Most overrated show ever
So what is good about the show? Scenery, visuals, acting perhaps.
But hell it is so boring. It never really takes off. What was this finale please? Most boring show finale ever.
In the beginning the show tries to be shocking by obscene violence but that later on fizzles out.
But throughout I often found myself not very interested in watching further.
The biggest issue is that Toranaga's Master plan is not really all that surprising. It is clear from episode 6 or so what kind of person he really is. Basically all the interesting characters died for his greed and power hunger. That is literally what the show is about in the end. But it comes across super bland because not really surprising or tense or anything.
Also the main character Anjin Blackthorne does not come across very interesting to me. He is way too clean in character and I wish he could have been a bit more of twisted mind himself.
That is why I felt also the story between Blackthorne and Mariko is super run of the mill. Okay I get it, it is an adaptation from an earlier version where it was like this. But I found the love story somehow super boring and not convincing. Just like super predictable and too much of "Foreinger comes to exotic country, married woman falls in love in with him and vice versa". How many times have we seen this before?
Verdict - I really do not get the hype and I do not think it comes anywhere close to the *early* seasons of Game of Thrones. Completely different league.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
I don't understand the bad reviews
First up, the movie is decent.
Of course, I went with low expectations after all those bad reviews. However, I think even unprimed the movie is actually better than the masses think this time.
One critique I have read several times is that it would be an incoherent mess. I cannot comprehend this critique at all, as I find the movie to follow a clear red-line throughout.
Moreover the CGI did not strike me as that bad either.
It does feel at times more like a Star Wars movie than another MCU one because of all the creatures etc. But, hey, that is the Multiverse now.
Of course there are some illogical points. Like why would Janet never have told any of that? Of course it is kind of out of the blue added and does not match up so nicely with the previous storylines but I think it is forgivable and not the first time stuff like this happens.
I do think it is an Ant-Man movie and not an Ant-Man and the Wasp movie as the Wasp barely plays a significant role. That is okay either. It was good the 2nd was titled that way but I think Marvel should have the guts to go back to Ant-Man only if it makes more sense. After all comic book issues also frequently change their titles that way.
The pacing surely is different than in previous Ant-Man movies but I liked how they took time sometimes for introducing Kang the Conquerer etc and there were some quiet scenes overall quite fitting.
In any case, overall, I do not think it was that bad even by other MCU standards. Not Infinity War Material clearly but still a good Sunday afternoon feature.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Shakespeare has been re-interpreted a million times...
Goddamn, do not listen to all the haters just because it is different than source material.
Reinterpretations can happen, are supposed to happen, if they are good.
This is not, I repeat not, corny, not cringey, not bad at all. The first epsiode actually blew me away totally in a good sense. After all these bad reviews, I was completely taken aback by how intense the world and its dangers actually were introduced.
I can understand fans who do not like source material being butchered. The only franchise I feel such things with is Star Wars, but still I try to rate on quality of plot and execution, not one to one translation of all original plot lines and details.
This is a GREAT SHOW DESERVES WAY BETTER.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Qualifies for the worst movie ever.
From the opening seconds onwards this movie is so so so bad and brainless. And it doesn't get better throughout.
I seriously thought this is a parody. At least I had a good laugh over how bad this is compared to the original Jurassic Park.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
One of the best shows ever and don't listen to the haters of season 3
The Umbrella Academy is superb. It is so fun and entertaining. The soundtrack excels. The characters do too.
Season 1 and 2 are outstanding to me but even season 3 is really good.
I really do not think all the hate for season 3 is deserved. I just finished it and it was still super easy to watch and follow and just overall enjoyable. There are some unlikeable developments yes, like the character of Allison. But overall it is still amazing. My bet is that the real-life transition of Elliot Page that was also taken on board for the show upsets many viewers more than minor weaknesses actually should.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
It's a disaster and I think critics are way too lenient
Let me say: These three stars are for Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen both whom I dearly like.
However they take part in a bad show. No not a bad show. A show that utterly reveals again how Disney does not give a crap about the legacy of Star Wars, the original story and will continue to abuse it (sorry but this is the the word that expresses most what I think they do).
There are so many ridiculous plot lines in this show that do not make any sense considering the original triology that it is actually sad. (a consistent continuation given the sequel triology I must say however).
For instance, as you know already the whole Leia -- Obi-wan bonding just doesn't make any goddamn sense. It does not! She knows him only from her parents' stories in the originals.
Further, the Vader and Obi-wan encounters are somet kind of fun but the finale episode again puts shame on the entire Star Wars legacy in particular of the original movies as well as the prequels. Vader is not supposed to lose again against Obi-wan. THIS ALREADY HAPPENEND. THE STORY IS DONE WITHOUT this fight already. In Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan already sees that his friend is gone and then ecounters him many many years later in A New Hope but does not see worth in him fighting against Vader anymore because the next generation takes over. The first clash in this series where Obi Wan loses still kinda makes sense given that it adds to the breaking of the spirit of Obi-Wan. However, the finale totally ridicules the character Vader. Obi-Wan could have killed him here once and for all, in fact he even sets out to do so, then he wins and could have done so but again chooses not to? I cannot understand why critics treat this not more harshly. It literally ruins the entire consistency of the story of all the six movies of originals and prequels. It overwrites the story and then ends in completely illogical conclusions just to keep it somehow in line. Shame on you Disney and anyone involved for not respecting this. I really do not get it.
I understand if Disney wants to expand and exploit the Star Wars universe but why around these characters again and again? Everytime something new comes out it makes it worse.
There are many more points to complain about but this is the most important and biggest blunder of all. It is a disaster really.
The Wheel of Time: The Dragon Reborn (2021)
extremely good don't believe the haters
I haven't seen something thaat fun in a long time. This is dark epic fantasy at it's best. For me as good as the witcher.
Highly recommended. I don't understand these days. If that is not a solid 8 what then? And why all these 1 star reviews on Amazon.
The Harder They Fall (2021)
If it were not for people hating on identity politics...
So first of all. The movie is really good! It is hell of a Western and one of the greatest movie endings in a long time.
I truly think people hate it because the film is also an identity statement of the black community.
But you know what? Rightly so. Black cowboys were real. And even so were black free townships. Google it up. It might not have been as portrayed in the movie. Of course not. It is a goddamn movie. But what are you hating on it for? It shines light on this kind of forgotten history (even though the movie is not at all historical and not realistic or anything but it makes you think about it at least).
Really good stuff. Give it a try if you like Western, Action and Revenge Stories.
The Expanse: Nemesis Games (2021)
What the actual ****?
I went through the boring episodes till here expecting much given the average good rating.
How Alex, an extremely likable character, was killed off was the most ridiculous stupid thing I have ever scene on screen. I did not know anything about the actor's controversy and this is not a statement relating to this. But this was absolutely bad story writing. I loved the expanse. I have never been this disappointed by anything ever before, including GoT.
The season was at best mediocre. Didnt get me like previously unfortunatley.
Cobra Kai: December 19 (2021)
one of the best episodes in a tv show ever
Cobra kai accomplished the marvelous: You feel hate and sympathy for one character at the same time as I cannot recall in any other show or cinematic experience. What they created with Kreese's backstory (and how it influences "today's" events) is a truly ingenious storyline that is soo captivating.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Undoes the original triology arc not forgivable
This movie is the final straw to an already bad triology. I never even liked The Force Awakens. Actually against most I already considered it as a really bad movie But this here, bringing the emperor back etc., makes absolutely no sense and is just pure idiocracy. They ruin the whole character arc of Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker and in consequence the one of Luke Skywalker as well. THIS is the real Skywalker saga, not what has been completely messed up here. I like the Mandalorian so far and other newer entries like Rogue One. But frankly this is complete garbage and as far from good (new) story telling as it gets.
Why not come up with new completely unrelated sagas in the vast vast galaxy!? Can we please take this triology out of the canon again?
Insatiable (2018)
Critic consenus and on rotten tomatoes critic consensus are utter non-sense.
The critic consensus is absolute non-sense! the series is unique, crazy, and yes ridiculous, but still great and just fun watching. Great acting, too.I dont know since when TV is not supposed to be ridiculous ?
And by the way, the show is not about fat-shaming. That is just an overly sensitive press and journalism picking up on something that is not there. If anything the series exposes and portrays problems that are related to fat- (and other) shaming under a new light. Even from the very first episode onwards, it is exactly not about that... I cannot personally comprehend how the series got destroyed for this reason. And just saying I am in many respects a left-green thinking person, if that helps to put my review in perspective (which we do have to do nowadays unfortunately i think).
for this sympathy 10 stars here. The series definitely does not deserve a meager 6 but should be realistically and 8+ somewhere I suppose.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Endgame is not Endgame: Good but not on par with Infinity War
I cannot exactly understand why everyone celebrates this movie as if it were genius. In my opinion, it is not. It's good, very good but not genius.
Infinity war was epic. An epic tale, with great heroes and a terrifying and captivating villain. It was dramatic. Unexpected and intense things happened (Gamorrha death e.g.). Endgame does lack most of these cherries on the cake. Sure it gives us some great moments. The beginning made me feel again (Hawkeye, Tony's entrance etc.). However it stays within the realm of delivering nostalgia. It does not make enough use of the time travel plot. Not enough crazy mindbending storyline to offer. There are way better time travel stories out there. All this movie does while "time traveling" is getting nostalgic. Tony's demise was not that surprising nor was that everyone else was resurrected. The only crazy "twist" was Natasha dying.
In between the movie also got kind of boring in my opinion. A feeling I never had once during Infinity war. Thanos did not feel like a huge threat nor did anything else. They could have made so much more mindbending twists of the time traveling but with the alternative reality direction etc. sure it's kind of set up to be uninteresting. (maybe thanos should have known all along? Maybe they should have made it a conflict of Tony having to decide between his life now and bringing the "old way" and people back? Maybe something else? But give me more final thrill and darkness, in such a final piece please). Captain Marvel felt entirely displaced. The only thing she does (again) is showing up and destroying spaceships. And some logic holes spanning the movie (e.g. at the end why are all of Peter's classmates still his age and nobody 5 years older--> highly unlikely outcome?).
It maybe wasn't supposed to be another infinity war but except for Steve Rogers I am not sure anybody got Endgame here.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Super low reviews here are biased !! The movie is good (kinda) !
This movie started on wednesday or even some days earlier before its release with a score of 5. This i very unusual given that movies usually start high and then fall and find their equilibrium but here it was the other way around. Given the the bad feelings in the community about the trailer and Brie Larson as Protagonist I think reviewers and ratings have been biased from the beginning and the chances on a rating 7+ have been lower than usual. Bad rating in the beginning means anchor bias for follow up reviewers. Just saying.
Now a brief review. The movie is not worse than many other Marvel movies. The beginning is awesome. Lame points are ridiculous jokes as how Fury loses his eye or the fact that how captain marvel got her powers is really a not developed part of the story and kind of boringly brought into the movie..
Warcraft (2016)
Good Movie. Critics probably cannot embrace committed adaptation.
It's fun. I like the story. The characters have inner conflicts. The story is complex and believable. The cartoonish style is of course bold and ambitious but it feels like finally somebody had the guts to make a video game /mythology adaptation rather true to its origin and is not credited for it.
Arrival (2016)
Boredom gets 8.3 stars on average?
Another flick, I cannot comprehend the extraordinary rating of. OK, yes there is a great philosophical idea integrated into this movie approaching questions like: Does causality only acts forward in time? What is causality at all? Is the language we use intrinsically connected to the way we perceive the world? How are our mental capabilities related to what we perceive? To which extent is our brain, and even reality, structured through the syntactic and semantic symbol systems we move in? Yes actually I find the topic great, if I think about it. You could write essays about it, do research etc.
But oh yeah, there is the rest of the movie. No matter the soundtrack or whatever. It is boring. Nothing really happens. No thrill. Nada. Plot gaps are there too. The aliens come to earth to say they need us in 3000 years? Aha. Why do they come now and not 5000 years ago? Why is the world even spinning further if past and future coexist in an endlessly iterative loop forever influencing each other, like a dog chasing its own tail. What breaks the loop? Ah anyway now I am doing philosophy again and not the movie. The movie is boring...
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Me against the world (SPOILER ALERT)
Sorry, but I found the movie to be incredibly disappointing. Never seen any other such an epitome of non-originality.
I have been Star Wars fan my whole life. I have seen the trailers to this movie and thought, "Wow". They are going to make it. They are going to create a wonderfully dark and epic fantasy story, right there where "Empire strikes back" and "Revenge of the Sith" left off. Yes, you are reading correctly. Even Revenge of the Sith, if not even the whole Prequel trilogy was better. Why? Because seriously: Another bigger death star, a kid growing up on a desert planet again, a heavily cheesy death scene for Han Solo, a space battle showdown which happens next to the rest of the plot without triggering the slightest thrill or excitement ala "oh there is a big planet-like death star, oh now it is gone, because guess what, we flew in it and destroyed it" ?????. The prequels at least had a good story/idea (political backgrounds, sith lord manipulates the republic from the inside, chosen one falls and much more) but were often extremely badly executed. This movie looks great, but its story sucks, it is just boring and I felt ashamed while watching it for me waiting so long and expecting so much of it.
I really cannot comprehend how this movie is so celebrated by the community and critics. I guess though it relates how you feel about the movie corresponding to what ideal image of Star Wars you create in your mind. For me Star Wars always ought to be Lord of the Rings in space or rather close to that idea. Here we get Harry Potter (the movies) with lightsabers and guns. And people love Harry Potter... I don't.
