A Lesson Before Dying (1999)
Moving portrayal
A moving portrayal of life for African American people in the deep South in the 1940's. Beautifully filmed and acted, and faithful to the book by Gaines, which is a must-read for those seeking to understand the predicament of Black men in America.
Destinos: An Introduction to Spanish (1992)
A truly amazing story and opportunity for learning
I've watched the show twice so far, and plan to do so again. I'm floored by the quality of a production designed to teach Spanish, particularly the amazing cast, and the settings ranging from Mexico City, to Sevilla and Madrid, Spain, to Buenos Aires, Puerto Rico, and more. All the settings are impeccably realistic, especially all the homes of the many characters. Nothing looks staged. Not only does the series provide practice with listening to natural Spanish, it also teaches vocabulary, grammar, as well as information about the different places Raquel visits on her quest, including differences in Spanish in different countries.
I have to say that the characters are so lovely and good that over the course of the series they became real to me, and I so wanted them to be happy. Yes, there's a lot of repetition in parts, especially in the beginning and at the excavation site, but overall I'm in awe of what they've created in what is essentially an educational program, now available for free on the Internet.
