The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)
No shirts needed for this wonderful sequel.
The Babysitter was such a great out of the box thinking comedy horror movie. When the sequel was announced I cringed. Most don't compare to the original, how lucky we are this one is it's own Terminator 2!
With a returning cast, writer and director there wasn't an odd turn from the chemistry that made the first movie such a fun watch.
Seeing our main character, Cole, grown up a bit, and a couple years down the road from the Devils night is really great. Judah Lewis "Cole" remains loveable, awkward and heroic.
Jenna Ortega plays "Phoebe" a new character that is a wonderful addition and key component to the film.
Storyline is excellent, the gore, the laughs and fun moments are plentiful.
Anyone that's given this a poor rating is simply angry with life. lol
The Sleepover (2020)
Finally a movie that is funny and exciting the whole family enjoy.
I can only assume that those reviewers who gave poor ratings were expecting a foul mouthed, blood filled, acton flick.
Thank God this wasn't needed to make a wonderfully entertaining movie.
I think it's safe to say that we have a few young stars in the making here. The kids truly have great timing, acting skill, humour and just likeability. Maxwell Simkins is an absolute riot. This young man has personality for days and pulls off comedy like a champ. Ken Marino that plays "dad', is awkward and funny as heck! These two actors really helped carry the comedy load.
Joe Manganiello does a great job of making fun of himself and remains sexy and as always likable. The guy just has it. Malin Akerman that plays "mom" did a good job but can't help thinking she was weak link in the role and another actress could have been a better fit. Or perhaps the writers just didn't allow her to have enough funny lines to take away from her too often serious character.
It is predictable? Yeah for the most part. However it doesn't matter since the laughs are plentiful, the action is actually better than expected and you feel like you spent your time wisely and happily watching The Sleepover.
Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
Even nostalgia didn't get it done. Awful dude.
A fan of the series, a huge fan of Keanu. That being said this movie should have NEVER been made!
The story line is garbage, the actors are too old to take serious as the kids we loved in the first two, and just can't pull it off.
Attempts at using old gimmicks from the previous two movies combined felt like someone wrote this on a plane trip. No thought of sending the trilogy out in style.
What's great about the movie?
Death. He steals the show in many ways and is the only character that made me even smile.
The second thing about it that was "most excellent", it's over. Done. No way for another tragic follow up.
I hoped beyond hope this would be the feel good, laughter filled, fun ride we are used to. It was just a ride you hoped would end so you could say you watched the final installment.
Avanpost (2019)
Very good, could have been GREAT!
Without giving spoilers let me give you reasons to watch this.
First off, the storyline is original as can be for any alien movie from any country.
Second, a lot of very good action and well done CGI.
Third, a bunch of actors you've never heard of that do a great job not only acting their roles but also providing some fantastic combat training and footage.
The place this movie falls short is that the storyline could have been so much more. I understand that the filmmakers had to shorten the move in order to get in as much as they could but really this could have been made into a two part movie with a better ending. Just my opinion.
However, give it up to the Russians on this one! They have come a LONG way and truly are putting out some good sci fi content.
Give it a watch and enjoy.
The Gentlemen (2019)
Brilliant Ritchie strikes again and does so with both barrels.
Guy Ritchie, what else needs to be said? He's put out movies that are nothing short of classics. It's been a minute since we've seen something come out from him and he kicks in the door with The Gentlemen as a "did you miss me".
Is there nothing Matthew Mcconaughey can't master in the acting world? He put on a performance that goes against anything we've seen from him before and I must say I LOVE his character and his believability.
Charlie Hunnam gets his first chance to really shine in my opinion. He's a wonderful actor but this sets him apart as being more than just a great looking lad with tallent.
Hugh Grant, who has really fallen off the popularity list of A level actors, makes this a personal calling card to say "I'm still here and I'm GREAT"! And he is great in this, steals the show on many levels and you'll love him all over again!
Colin Farrell comes into the movie towards the final third but shows why hie's an A lister! Funny, versatile, and just damn believable in whatever role you give him.
Michelle Dockery, plays Matty boys wife and gives one truly wonderful, bad ass, and funny performance.
As far as the plot? Who cares! You know you're going on a British gangster ride with Guy Ritchie, just sit back and enjoy brilliant actors doing brilliant things, in brilliant roles, with a brilliant storyline. Truly a classic set from day one. Bravo!
Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
Eddie makes art with comedy and WINS
Take a real life story, have Eddie Murphy play the lead role, enter a cast of supporting actors that could hold up the Empire State Building and the parts are there for something special.
Well, special is what Eddie Murphy has done. Make no mistake this is based on a real persons life, make no mistake Eddie was a fan of Dolemite as a kid, and without DOUBT Mr. Murphy put his whole heart into this role.
A comedy that is vulgar because it had to be but also did not fail to leave out the very human side of Rudy Ray Moore, aka Dolemite.
This is a success story of a man that wouldn't take no for an answer from life or the entertainment business. The reflection of the 1970's is done perfectly and Eddie crushes the role. I can't say what Murphy's motivation was to act so flawlessly but it worked for him unlike any role I've seen him play. Yes he was a fan of Rudy Ray Moore as a child and perhaps that was enough but appears Eddie turned this into something personal and in doing so allows you to feel, laugh, and straight up root for Rudy Ray the entire time.
I won't even get into the supporting cast other than say each actor nailed their role.
This is funny cinematic experience but also touching in a triumphant humanizing story.
Have always been a fan of Eddie's but this shows that he can take comedy and turn into art and win one for the team of humanity.
Sex Education (2019)
Brilliant, Funny and Meaningful
My 19 year old niece was watching Sex Education with her boyfriend laughing uncontrollably. After they finished I watched the first episode alone, then the next, and over three days the entire season. It's just that fantastic and I'm a grown man!
There is not one bad or even average acting performance in any episode from any actor.
Gillian Anderson, I didn't even recognize her at first! She slays the role as the mother and puts on an English accent as well as any non Brit will. This is a role I would have never seen her in, but she pulls off comedy and motherhood in a way that I cant help but bow to her god like acting! She deserves an award!
Asa Butterfield, I recalled him from Enders Game, but here's a young man that's all grown up and carries the quirky lead role like a champ and is truly wonderful, funny, and oddly charming. Again, should receive an award for such wonderful acting.
Emma Mackey, a young actress I've not seen before has just tossed her stardom into the heavens. She is truly brilliant and is able to bring forth both comedic and deeply emotional connections through her character. I can't help but think she will be a household name within the next five years.
Ncuti Gatwa,Connor Swindells,ar Williams-Stirling, and Alistair Petrie as Headmaster Groff, should all have their phones ringing off the hook with offers for larger roles from now on. As the supporting cast, but leads in their own right, they put together a view of the often complex and challenging world of teenagers in school today. As an adult you can learn a lot about the current culture of this generation, as well as the maturity and knowledge that these kids have at such an early age compared to previous generations.
If you want stellar acting, comedy, awkward situations, drama and a joyous ride then do yourself the honor of binging through Sex Education.
The Last Kingdom (2015)
Hands down the best period piece since it actually happened!
Just finished season three after waiting with anticipation!
Simply brilliant!
The actors put forth such emotion and believable portrayals of each character it's hard to believe this is fantasy.
To take England before it was England and show the way people lived and thought is truly breathtaking. Mix that in with the invading Danes, a touch of history, a dash of brilliant wardrobe and scenery and that my friends brings about storytelling at its best!
Alexander Dreymon as the lead character is both sexy and convincing as Uhtred. Big things should follow for this young man.
David Dawson as King Alfred steals scenes without intent his acting is so good. Season three he puts on a performance that at one point made my eyes water up with emotion. I'm now a HUGE fan of this man's work.
Ian Hart is another actor that takes it to the next level, in part the role but also that he is so believable as the Priest we all wish was our friend.
Harry McEntire makes you hate him with a passion and sells the role so well you can't help but admire anyone making you feel the way he does. What a stellar young actor this man is indeed!
Two thumbs up, give it a host of Emmy's, it is all that and a bag of chips!
The Night Comes for Us (2018)
Graphic violence never looked so good! Martial Arts masterpiece
My God!!!! I want to give spoilers but just will not because you MUST watch this movie if you are a fan of action.
I've seen several of the Indonesian based actors before, many legit martial artist turned actors, and the choreography is insane and brilliant!
Graphic. It is VERY graphic. But that lends to the realism of what really happens to a human body when it's cut, beaten, shot, ran over etc!
The story line is actually REAL good. Not just a beat em up, shoot em up plot with no substance.
I applaud the actors and director for making a martial arts masterpiece that will surely be discussed decades from now as one of the best.
The Outsider (2018)
Brilliant!!!
Jared Leto again shows a level of acting and ability to make you believe his roll that has made him an Oscar winner.
This movie has so much to offer the viewer! Brilliant acting in every roll, action, passion, cultural depth and the list goes on.
I can't imagine anyone that loves a well acted, directed and written movie not loving this!
See it for yourself and dive into the world of the Japanese crime world experienced by an American!
Dog Years (2017)
Simple, funny, touching.
I have to give this movie high marks for both the acting of Burt and Winter. Yes, I am partial to Burt, he's been in some amazing movies that made him a true star and American icon. That being said watching him grow old has been sad and this movie seems to be as much about his real life from super star to forgotten star as it does about anything.
Winter....I've never seen her work before other than one episode of Modern Family. She does a very fine job here as a problem child with a talent for art and I adored her bond with Burt throughout the film.
Wont be an Oscar winner but it does warm the heart and leaves you to consider how fast life goes by.
Fire City: End of Days (2015)
How does garbage like this get funded?
I give this a one! Only because there was a song playing halfway through that I found good. A SONG! I had to give it a one for that!
Let me be honest, 100%. You would garner more enjoyment being a three year old, dinner taken away, and then forced to watch CSPAN for a week in your room!
Acting is awful, makeup for the demons is like "Hellboy" wannabe's. The script....seriously? What script? It's a mess! An absolute mess! The budget for this thing couldn't have been more than offering crisp crème donuts in trade!
Yes, it is THAT bad. You will never get the time back if you watch this so be aware, unless you like bad acting, makeup, and a stupid plot, don't bother!
Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Western meets horror and earns an A!
One thing that may turn people off, it has a slower feel with less action than some may hope. Other than that BRAVO! Kurt Russell won our hearts as Wyatt Earp and to see him in another leading Western movie role was great. His acting was spot on and believable as always. Patrick Wilson continues to shine as one of Hollywood's best male actors. His role as a cowboy with a fractured shin makes you feel his pain. His desire to find his wife is also believable and passionate. Mathew Fox was seriously amazing as a well to do, former soldier turned gun slinger. Truly captured his role better than anyone. Richard Jenkins puts a performance as Deputy Sheriff together that is not only funny, but lovable, innocent and honest. The banter between the above mentioned parties was spot on and their connection together as actors was simply stellar.
What you'll find is a true Western movie that has some very graphic and well done scenes in the first two thirds of the movie. What happens at the final third is disturbing and brilliant horror. Like Dusk til Dawn the movie switches speed at the end with surprises you may not be prepared for. Unlike Dusk Til Dawn, you wont find the quips in humor to lighten up the mood, keeping a serious and brutal tone.
I refuse to give away one death scene to anyone who has yet to see the movie. All I can say is it's unlike anything you'll see and it leaves you speechless!
An amazing and strange movie made possible by fantastic acting, chemistry, and shock.
The Bastard Executioner (2015)
It stands on its own merit.
First of all, those who want to compare this to Sons of Anarchy need to wake up. It's a period piece you fools. Are you waiting for there to be be drug selling or motorcycle gangs in medieval times? Stop. Rant over.
Stephen Moyer is brilliant. His role is suited for him. Flora Spencer-Longhurst is an actress we haven't gotten to see much of but I would expect with her performances in the show she will be getting a lot of future work. Lee Jones as the lead does a very good job, big, strong, compassionate, and wields a mean sword. Last, Katy Segal. It's a role unlike anything she's done. A role unlike any award winning actress has done imo. She's a great fit for it. Hair and makeup as well as her accent and she's hard to recognize at first.
The story, one of revenge, one of desire for forgiveness, for hope, and for a free Wales. The costumes, fight scenes, and some very graphic torture scenes are all fitting of this era. Not unlike the graphic nature of the Spartacus series.
I will say it has it's brooding moments and took a few episodes to build the overall plot, but stick with it and I think you'll be quite pleased.
Serbuan maut 2: Berandal (2014)
Best Martial Arts action film I've seen in years!
No Spoilers folks. Acting is good, storyline is good. OK? You wont be bored with those two. Now for what blew my mind! Add good acting, a storyline you can believe, and some of and often the best fight choreography I've ever seen! I'm not going to give you the premise of the film. I went into it without any knowledge of what it was about. The action sequences in the film are done by truly magnificent Silat (Indonesian fight art)masters. There's no flying through trees or garbage from a fantasy land. This is technical, fast, mind blowing and often gruesome fight scenes! There are points you might feel the urge to turn your head but you just cant! Iko Uwais who plays the lead role is AWESOME! I'm an overnight fan! Yayan Ruhian choreographed the scenes and has a good role as well and he is also AWESOME! There are half a dozen martial artist in this movie that stand out HUGE and you will know who I'm talking about once you've seen it. If Hollywood is watching they would do well to scoop these folks up and get them to LA. Bottom line...watch it. Even the most skeptical action/martial arts film buff will walk away saying "That's legit as it gets"!
Big Game (2014)
Time I'll never get back,,,,Big Shame
You will LOVE this movie if you are a boy ages 5-11. Otherwise prepare for a total sense of lost time. Time you could have spent re-watching Showgirls.
Take a couple big name stars, give them a script written by a sixth grader about POTUS getting shot out of the sky and rescued by a loser Finnish kid and you have the movie.
The story is that of the President of the United States being shot down in Air Force One over Finland. Betrayed by his Secret Service agent that took a bullet for him and forced to retire. So he gets offered big money by terrorist to help and the succeed. POTUS lands in his Presidential emergency pod and is rescued by a Finnish kid with daddy issues. Oscar, the kid, is sent out by his father and hunting buddies into the wilderness for his right of passage to manhood. Thing is the kid cant pull the string on the bow because he's...well...a loser. But of course he finds the President, befriends him, rescues him while helping to take down the all the bad guys. Very realistic...not. Spoiler....... Why did this happen??? Well turns out the oldest CIA agent (think older than dirt) and Vice President are behind all this so that the VP can take office. Well that doesn't happen, and POTUS gets rescued by SEALS and the kids a damn hero, and his daddy's real proud, and all the old hunters in the group are amazed..THE END. How do movies like this even get funded is what I take from it all.
Maggie (2015)
I guess Nicholas Cage was busy
This movie is so bad Nick Cage didn't bother signing up for it! The best part of this movie was the ending, as in, it's over and I can now attempt to deal with the two hours I'll never get back.
Arnold as a Midwest farmer is as believable as Arnold as a Midwest farmer. Someone thought they could get the big man to show his acting range........fail. This movie is NOT scary for starters. If you're going to see a horror flick this ain't it. It's a bad drama with limited zombies and virtually no action. That being said I know, I know, it wasn't supposed to be an action movie. BUT, one would believe that a film that is about a zombie virus, with zombies, and Arnold would have something more than father and daughter moments.
So this is a drama. A pure drama genre movie meant to show the love of a father (Arnold) as he stands by his zombie infected eldest child (Abigail Breslin). It's depressing, slow, and the actors are unbelievable in each of their roles....with the exception of Abigail Breslin. Poor child deserved a better script to work with.
So if you're going to watch this be prepared to take a long nap.
Monsters: Dark Continent (2014)
Wish it wasn't so.........a war movie.
The original movie was an unexpected and lovely surprise. Dark Continent was just a surprise.....a very bad one at that. The pros of the movie. 1. Visually it was excellent, the Monsters were very well done. 2. Johnny Harris and Sam Keeley gave great performances with the script that they had to work with. 3. Supporting actors were believable.
The Cons of this movie. 1. The actual Monsters we wanted to see were mere backdrops. 2. A depressing war movie with what appeared to be nothing less than the writers and director's agenda on war. 3. Depressing and dark. 4. An ending that leaves you empty and without reason.
Another example of a "what could have been" follow up movie. I'll for sure look to see the future work of actors Harris and Keeley simply because both men showed an impressive ability to make use of what was given.
