River's Edge (1986)
Pushed hard to be quirky, kinda hits mainly misses
I saw this in the 80s and it seemed too alternative, not that I am a lot older I rewatched it and realized I missed nothing.
Crispin is kinda cool how he looks like he doing sign language as well as being a Broadway/West End thespian in all his scenes but it just seems pushed to be different and fit into the 'cult' section of the video shop rather than being honest.
Keano is always horrible as an actor and seems like he always will be. He's just really not a natural actor and has simply been elevated and pushed to be an actor all his life. I remember seeing a talk show interview of his where he even admitted he can't act and wonders why people watch his films. So I guess it's not his fault. Bad casting is often a massive problem and puts great actors like Hopper in situations where he has to waste his talents along side crap actors.
Keanos brother in the film is unbelievably bad as an actor.
All the hair flicking and bouncy walking that Keano later uses in Bill and Teds is hard to watch. Even Glover does it.
Ioni Skye is hot as hell and half decent and the mother of Keanos character is also quite good. The big dude that killed the girl is not bad either, surprisingly.
Pretty crap movie. Watch the Lost Boys or Rumblefish instead.
Wedgetail (2017)
Awesome, dramatic but relatable film with one of the best leads i've seen in ages
I haven't seen a film like this before. Original and topical and adds a new angle on an issue that i've seen tried before but not successfully communicated like this. Highly recommended if you like new information to contemplate on while being totally engrossed in almost perfect acting. The cast, especially the lead was incredible and relatable, alomst disturbing in a lot of parts. Probably not a date night movie but for people that love film and extremely well acted characters, this film blows away almost every other film i've seen this year. It was easy to watch but draining too, had some funny parts to it as a good balance and relates to a lot of people especially those who have tra\velled to south east asia. I saw this at a film festival and can't wait for it to be widely distributed so I can see it again. Won some awards too from what I remember.
Catastrophe (2015)
Culturally perfect.
Instead of listing all the reasons why this show is so brilliant, I need to address the people that gave it a low score.
I know the American guy wrote this series, but it is written in tune with the characters you will meet in the UK.
The only people that gave this series a low score were from American cities. NOW wait... I do know that a lot of Americans scored this show highly, however, the only ones that didn't understand or like it were also from the USA.
Now, without being negative or discriminatory, I have to say that this show has a LOT of UK based characterization and cultural references that are so subtle yet prevalent throughout the whole series.
You don't have to be from or have lived in the UK to love this show, however, it really helps. The 'annoying' or 'depressing' or 'rude' characters that some people were complaining about are actually very accurate if not slightly exaggerated for comedic reasons. To address some of the comments on the jokes not being funny, well, they are not so much 'jokes' rather than witty responses to cultural observations. Wit plays a huge part in the structure of comedy of the UK. It IS different to the USA in that respect. I am not saying American comedy is not witty, I am saying that in the UK it is a base structure and not so much a additive like it is in USA comedies. Neither is better than the other.
Just like Costanza in Seinfeld who demonstrates the highly anxious, elaborate and morally confused New Yorker, Catastrophe highlights the stereotypes of the UK in just as an elaborate way. Comedy in the UK is based around financial struggle, family problems, outlining how miserable and depressed one can get very quickly with the sharp turn of ill-fortune as well as keeping their chin up and making the most of it all by cutting someone else down for instant gratification. The wit is expressed by self deprecation and dark comedy as an observation and reaction to these dire circumstances. Comedy in the USA has a lot of different traits and I love them both. USA comedies are more often than not set in mid to high level income groups that either live in conveniently rent controlled penthouse apartments or 6 bedroom, 3 storey houses in affluent suburbs. UK comedies are usually set in low income groups where the character's lives are threatened by poverty or being perpetually ordinary.
These reasons are why some people may not quite like or get the comedic flow and brilliance of this show.
I do love comedies from both the UK and USA and there is no competition between them. If you don't like Catastrophe then you either simply don't like it or you don't understand the subtleties of the UK culture. THAT is NOT a bad thing, I am just saying that it happens, just like I would not understand the subtleties of Indian comedy or German comedy. They might not understand USA comedy either, it's more of a cultural gap than an intelligence thing so do not think I am putting anyone down. Thanks.
These Final Hours (2013)
A typical night out in Perth
The film looked like a typical night in Perth to me. Trying to escape from and deal with socially challenged cavemen. The end of the world is just something you deal with every time you have to venture outside your mcmansion and deal with basic and primitive Perth people.Their lack of social awareness, creativity and inspiration shines through in this film that depicts Perth people accurately. In fact this movie was actually mild in representing Perthies in their little town so that viewers with an IQ higher than 1 could understand it enough to watch the whole thing. I think to perfectly depict Perth they needed to add more neanderthals and brain damaged people with absolutely no way to communicate and live among each other without grunting and banging rocks against other rocks to bet their pointless messages across.
