Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (2024)
A cinematic masterpiece or a historical blunder?
It seems the writer did not bother to do research on the subject of how to execute the ambiance, the culture, the language or the true essence of the city from the history archives. This movie has nothing to do with Lahore. The area that they have presented was always called SHAHI MOHALLA, even before the partition. The courtesans were brought in and settled there to please the Mughal soldiers. These courtesans had nothing to do regarding teaching manners and cultural etiquettes to the nobility of Lahore. The writer confused it with the courtesans of Lucknow which had a very different setup. Secondly the structure of the buildings in Lahore's walled City was not at all like what Mr. Bhansali has portrayed in this series. The walled City that is adjacent to the Lahore Fort is still the same at this point. Narrow lanes and more than 4 storey buildings connected with each other. The waedrobe: Sigh......there are hundreds of references available about how the people of Lahore no matter which class they belonged from used to wear at that time. The jewellery is so Lucknowi and has no connection with the traditional Lahori Punjabi jewllery. And since when Lahore had those English carriages roaming around the city?
Where were the simple Tongas and Palkis. The cast: The most important thing missing from the female cast is NAZAKAT and expressions. Each lady talkes in a very masculine and robotic tone without any depth of emotions. The hindi accents and dialects ruined the urdu language. Last but not the least, the courtesans of Lahore had no interest in regime change as their source of income was generated by customers from all Caste and creeds and they had to oblige all without any discrimination.
A huge disappointment overall.
Chhalawa (2019)
Sheer waste of time 👎
Huge disappointment. No subject, no dialogue no substance. Had high expectations from Mehwish Hayat. Waste of time, money and mood.
