White House Down (2013)
IQ Down. Way Down.
No doubt a vehicle to cash in on the Channing Tatum Magnum Opus, Magic Mike.
There is more security from a Walmart greeter wanting to check your receipt than the White House security in this movie.
This movie could almost be considered an homage to every action movie made since 1980. Only it does those same things jammed into some pretty decent production values.
One of the things that sticks in my mind is the way the top female secret service agent talks. She talks with all of the strength and authority as Jackie O describing the White House China.
Jamie Fox was the one bright spot in the movie.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
This is a mess (I did like the first Dr. Strange movie)
The evolution of the superhero movie. Things started out with the original Superman and Batman movies. Then came the Marvel and DC universes.
Now this is where we are at. Take a few well known characters and just throw everything into the sfx stew and stir it up. Super Smash Bros. On nonstop steroids and meth. Jackson Pollock would say this is too much.
It is time for a superhero mass extinction event.
Mom (2013)
Another Chuck Lorre turn the laugh track up to 11
Laugh track is an 11. Everything else is a zero. Here are some more words to get this review long enough.
Safe House (2012)
Come on man!?!
Herky-Jerky cinematography in the style of Paul Greengrass. Disorienting to watch. No thanks.
Dune (1984)
Not...uh...good.
The fact is, it's based on a book that was not very good to begin with. Combine that with really inexcusably poor special effects and you get Dune the movie.
Ozark (2017)
Strong start then downhill all the way
During the first season I probably would have given this 8 or 9 stars. I couldn't even make it half way through the 2nd season. Forget about the 3rd. The interesting story just kept getting smothered by one profanity spewing (It is on Netflix and can say anything you want. We get it.) unappealing character after another. SOME clever, well placed profanity can be a wonderful thing but this is just saying it because you can. Lazy writing to say the least. There might still be a good story in there somewhere but I can't wade through the garbage to find it. Maybe the two drink minimum crowd can.
Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969)
No, no, no, no, NO
One star each for Natalie Wood and Dyan Cannon. This is a weird, uncomfortable movie. Just saw this movie for the first time. Since it was billed as a "comedy", I kept waiting for the funny to arrive but it never did. The movie is soooooo self-serious. Slow pacing and unnecessary scenes (like the scene where Robert Culp is interacting with his kid). Did anything at all end up on the cutting room floor.
Dumplin' (2018)
Checks off all the boxes for this type of movie.
It is a 90 minute after school special.
I can't say that it is good or bad. It just is what it is. It is one of a million movies that will be made to pad the schedules of streaming services.
Sergeant York (1941)
Hollywood Hokum
The actual heroics and amazing accomplishments of the real Sergeant York get washed in the Hollywood machine. Southern stereotypes and schlocky storytelling detract but ultimately the story of the real Sergeant York carries the day and redeems the movie in spite of itself.
Terrible dialog throughout:
What are they fightin' fer, Ma? I don't rightly know child, I don't rightly know.
Enough with the harp and violins. We get it.
Those oddly dark colored caterpillars above Walter Brennan's eyes are unnerving.
USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage (2016)
What the ?
I guess I expected, you know, better quality. Closer to Sharknado than to Dunkirk. I trusted you Nicholas Cage. There are no more heroes.
