Back from Eternity (1956)
One of my favorite "little" movies
This is one of my favorite "little" movies. It is better than the original "Five Came Back" and is a curiosity because of John Farrow's having directed both versions. The fact that it IS all done on a sound stage fits it perfectly, as well as the black and white. It reminds me of another of my favorites: "The Thing (From Another World)" with Kenneth Tobey. Great ensemble acting and not a word of dialog wasted. I think Robert Ryan's height helps him here; Chester Morris is on the short side. The story? Plane goes up, plane comes down. In jungle. People must get out of jungle to safety. However, there are problems with the plane and with the very unfriendly folds who live in the jungle. Kind of like an early version of "Lost."
Scrubs (2001)
Scrubs Two episodes Feb. 7, 2006
Just two short comments - 1.: are there any friends of this show among the network's top executives and 2.: these two episodes are, I think, among the funniest, if not the funniest, episodes this comedy has produced. I laughed out loud I don't know how many times. I have even gotten my sometimes caught in the Fifties college professor husband, who is nearing 70, to like this show and he watches hardly any TV except PBS. The sight gags are, of course, great, the surprise visits to the hospital by other actors, the dialogue, the in jokes - even tho I have been saving my money to get all the sets of the original "Star Trek" and "X-Files" shows, I will have to sacrifice some of that for "Scrubs" when it makes its appearance on DVD. I have to have it all.
The Human Duplicators (1965)
They don't make them like this anymore.
How can anyone not love this movie it is so awful! The girl running around the house in chiffon, the alien who obviously never attended The Actor's Studio, the secret agent who keeps pronouncing the professor's (of course there has to be a professor, this is a science fiction movie)full name as if it were his LAST name, the nurses in white in the lab acting like nothing was out of the ordinary - and above all the lead is Ralph Nader, his girl Friday is Barbara Nichols, wisecracking her way through her scenes and the boss is good ole Hugh Beaumont of "Leave It To Beaver." (Maybe he needed some extra cash.)This even has a version on MST 3000, but can stand by itself. Everyone should have a copy.
Flash Gordon (1954)
Flash Gordon (1954)
I was given a DVD of four of these episodes by my husband for Christmas when he couldn't find at the store the movie I had specifically requested. It probably cost a dollar and was in the cheapest possible packaging. I was screaming I was so excited. I have often thought of this series that I watched when I was young. I only remembered the name of Flash, but as soon as I read that he modeled for "Doc Savage," I recognized the resemblance.
The music sounds like Prokofiev's "Rite of Spring" at times and I agree that the German sets verge on the expressionistic. I'm sure I spend more on a week's worth of groceries than they did for the sets AND costumes. In fact, the costumes on "Akim the Terrible" look like they are handmade from a high school production. The German actor in this show who plays Kurt I think is very good and looks familiar; however, no credits are given for any actor except the three leads. One more thing, where did the commissioner get his eyebrows? These shows are great. I played them twice because I only had the four. Have to see if I can get any more. I'm sure it won't break whatever budget I have.
