Impact (2009)
An original approach to the standard meteor-disaster movie.
Impact is the kind of sci-fi movie you get when you spend the budget on well known (TV) actors and story instead of dumping it all into CGI effects and explosions. The implementation of science from old 1950s movies and unintentionally goofy dialogue result in some laugh out loud moments, but most of the time it's not too distracting.
The main story is original, although quite far fetched at times. As the movie goes on, the situation goes from bad to worse to disastrous... then everything goes to hell. But in a good way.
Luckily Earth is saved thanks to the deployment of a massive amount of different European accents.
The X Files: I Want to Believe (2008)
Not what you'd expect from an X-Files movie.
Mulder is brought in to investigate a RANDOM case in order to save a RANDOM FBI agent. Scully works in a hospital and tries to save a RANDOM kid.
The MAIN VILLAINS are a group of Russians stealing organs. Finally, the comic relief is a pedophile turned psychic.
I wish I was making this up.
I used to enjoy the series. I liked the first half of the first movie as well. In X Files 2, instead of sci-fi, mystery, conspiracies or aliens we just get fantasy and romance mixed with drama. What happened? Am I even the target audience anymore? Are the creators aiming for Hugh Grant fans?
If I would have to describe the movie in one word, it would be: "Dull".
Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008)
It's a good day to die, it's a good day to buy.
Satire at its best.
Punishments without legal trials? Check. An incompetent leader who thinks God speaks to him? Check. Suicide bombers? Check. Peaceful protesters labeled as terrorists? Check. Swearing considered a blasphemy, while killings go unnoticed? Check. Defeat equals victory? Check.
CGI has been improved - a lot of action sequences look bloodier than anything in the prequels. The "bugs" are more detailed and everyone has been upgraded - the bugs have XXL-scorpions and humans have, well, shovels. If severed limbs and exploding heads are not enough for entertainment, then there are also political intrigues which provide a few twists to keep the story interesting.
If the movie would take itself more seriously it could be a sci-fi epic. However, since the baddie "Main Brain" resembles more "Jabba from Star Wars" and less "Alien from Alien" it fails to do so. Anyhow, the Marauders themselves are impressive weapons and all in all, at the end of the day, Starship Troopers 3 is a worthy sequel that provides a decent amount of entertainment.
