Solid entertaining Sci Fi Hollyweird no longer does
14 February 2024
Watch this film. I gave this film a seven because it is an entertaining well told, well acted sci fi film. In fact I have watched this film four times, not only because it is good with good special effects but also because the rubbish propaganda films and tv shows from Hollyweird are unwatchable. In the ratings you will see people who have given it a one or two or three and I believe these are trolls who are simply down marking the film because it is Russian. I believe it has been attacked simply for that reason. Certain interested parties i.e. Hollyweird don't want Russian films to succeed and this film does succeed in creating good character, a solid story and believable likeable (some not) characters. So please watch.

Real writing
27 March 2022
I have watched two-hour films and read books with less humour, pathos and humanity than this pearl of wisdom. Can only leave this review if I use at least 150 characters which is difficult for a seven-minute film.

Clichéd but interesting
29 January 2022
This reminds me of the cliched way American TV and film still portrays Ireland in 2022, so its surprising that Germans see Ireland in the same way, or at least they seemed to in 2007. But its still interesting from a cultural point of view.

History with a revisionist slant
27 January 2022
This documentary is interesting from a visual point of view because it has been colourised but the narration by the Irish revisionist historian R F Foster, in my opinion, slants the history in favour of British/Unionist point of view too much.

Anti Christian propaganda 101
6 December 2021
This is as about as obvious as anti Christian propaganda gets. Which is the plus because it has spectacularly misfired. Seth Rogen calling people like me who are offended 'white supremacists' tells you all you need to know about the current media/NGO driven war on people of European descent.

You have to compare this to the original film which, although not without faults, had a great cast, character and mystery. There have been many film remakes, some of which were worthy but were mostly ill thought out. This falls between the two. The first mistake for me is the casting which seems to be based on who has starred in the most successful blockbusters. Lets take him from Guardians of the Galaxy, her from Mission Impossible, him from the Justice League, instead of picking the most suitable actor. Timothée Chalamet though sums up this best because he is just boring, weak and unimpressive. The story arc itself is almost identical to the original film which makes the comparison constant through out the film and does the remake no favours. All in all a pretty dull, though beautiful, film remake which is not close to Dune 1984 in terms of acting, originality and tension.

Unsurpassed historical re-enactment
12 October 2021
This film is simply superb. Whatever your view is of the Second World War this is as close as we will ever get to the reality of Hitler's last days despite it being a dramatic reconstruction. Its strength is a talented cast, realistic dialogue and the depiction of human beings rather than bogeymen. It is one of those small number of films that is so impressive that when, afterwards, I thought of the main protagonist I saw Bruno Ganz's face first.

It still amazes me that this film did not win the Oscar, he says sarcastically.

Neo Cold War propaganda
21 August 2021
If someone had asked me to write a propaganda film script to vilify post Cold War Christian Russians as exactly the same as cartoon Russian communists then this would be it. As if that was not bad enough the miscasting of Branagh as a most ridiculous Russian baddie and Keira Knightly as the winey voiced bad American accented irritating love interest then that truly condemns this film as the low IQ propaganda vehicle that it is.

Good idea but badly paced with the usual woke BS
3 August 2021
Not particularly original but fairly well acted and effects just about good enough. But the biggest gripe the usual woke nonsense with a plot that seeks to show that Muslims on planes can also be the good guys.

Well written and timely
27 October 2017
At last a drama about English Catholics that shows them as three dimensional people and not the caricatures that are usually trotted out on British television; not to mention the annual anti Catholic hate-fest that is bonfire night. Reading some of the negative reviews it is fairly evident that good acting, tense drama and a well written script are helpless in the face of the well entrenched and persistent anti Catholicism of some in 21st century Britain. For me at least, I am well satisfied by a drama that depicts accurately men and women of a lost English Catholic culture who were brave enough to fight and die for their rights against tyranny. How fitting it is that Guy Fawkes face now represents opposition to tyranny worldwide.

Dexter is great but...
12 September 2017
Dexter is great show and one I did not watch for years because I disliked it's premise and could not imagine how it could work. When I finally got around to watching it I was surprised how good it was and how the writers could actually make you root for a serial killer. The humour is one of the ways it softens the horror and the acting is first class. Using an entire series to tell one main story arc was also I think something of a first and it works well. Unfortunately the quality and believability begins to tail off after the 5th series and the hit you over the head anti Christian propaganda begins to become so obvious that it becomes a theme and is as boring as a fundamentalist atheist. But overall it is definitely worth watching.

Same old same old
23 July 2015
I really like Sean Penn and Javier Bardem as actors, so it is a real shame that they are both involved in this misfire. The dialogue is clunky, the plot is narcoleptic and the relationships unbelievably stupid. Apparently Sean was involved in the script. Stick to what you know best Mr Penn. The purpose of the film is clearly to try to launch Penn as an action man disguised as a humanitarian killer. All very confused and dull. If I want mindless violence I will watch Arnies latest resurrection. For Javier this is another 'negotiator' Maybe there is an explanation in the fact that the Director has only directed four films in eleven years. BTW was the review listed as no. 1 written by the studio?

Genocide ignored
4 March 2015
I have a real problem with a show like this produced by the BBC. This story is set just after the death and forced emigration of millions of Irish men, women and children by the actions and in-actions of the British government. The potato blight was an act of nature but the lack of help and support by Britain on the one hand and the forced eviction of tenants by landlords on the other produced this historic disaster in Ireland, the effects of which are still being felt. Does this British production actually reflect the hatred that these immigrants had for Britain at that time? Does it highlight Britain's responsibility for the death and destruction of the Irish people? The answer to both questions is no, which therefore makes this just British propaganda.
