Learning to Drive (2014)
Simple, sensitive & engaging.
An uncomplicated view of how and why people should abandon false hopes and assumptions about sex, race and privilege.
We're all in life together.
Adoration (2008)
Interesting depth of conversation...
I had no idea what to expect when I started watching, but half way through, realised there was a number of incredibly detailed conversations that lay under the script (which by definition had to be simplified for the movie to keep moving along).
You can watch this from one of many 'seats', and the message is just as strong - no matter your particular convictions. There are thoughts for every viewer if they care to look for them. Religious, the openness of the Internet, teacher-student relations, truth-and-lies, peer relationships and the way a story can gather unexpected momentum in many forms.
p.s. earlier posters, please don't confuse racism with cultural and ideological differences.
I enjoyed 'Adoration' a lot, and was not let down by the almost-always perfect production style that comes out of Canada.
The Haunting (1963)
47 years later and it's stayed with me!
I saw this as a pre-teen about 47 years ago, and while I'm not easily 'led', this film has been imprinted in my mind ever since - as a classic. The audience was fifty school kids on a Saturday night, running on 16mm film... Far more worthy than the more recent slasher genre, or the remake with Catherine Zeta Jones (but she's nice to look at!). Don't go in expecting CGI or effects. Have dinner, a glass of wine then watch it in a darkened room without distractions. A great example to show film students how script, acting and direction are far more important than colour, zombies or other 'horror' affectations. Just good solid filmmaking and will keep you up all night - if you 'get it' unlike some earlier reviews!
Zombie Shark (2015)
Where do we start?
Probably the best collection of the worst... Script, Acting, Dialogue, Animation, Rendering, Compositing, Animatronics... Perhaps the editing was OK, but I didn't see it because of the woeful direction! Watch it for no other reason than to grab your BFF during the bloody bits. The bikini babe in the beginning half is fine. The pointless use of firepower and explosives, paired with the topical application of zombies and remorseful reflection take this well down the list of stinkers... oh sorry... sinkers. In hindsight, the character of Lester is almost true, in the bumbling buffoon that tends the counter of the doomed resort. His role must be the lead, as the others certainly aren't supporting anything!
