OXV: The Manual (2013)
Interesting Concept, Badly Executed
The idea is interesting - at school we're given our individual frequencies which determine our success in life. Zak's is abnormally low, while Marie's is unusually high, so she decides to experiment with how their frequencies interact with each other.
That's as far as I got into the movie, because the acting was so stiff, it was painful to watch, while the high pitched "frequencies" playing in the background of scenes became distracting and irritating. I understand that they were going for a potentially eerie acting style which felt cold and stunted, but unfortunately it didn't pull it off because the acting was below par.
I don't like to be negative about independent films because I like unique ideas and know that it takes a lot of time and effort to make a movie, but this was so unenjoyable to watch and I think others should be warned.
I should have watched the trailer and stopped there.
Spontaneous (2020)
Trying hard and constantly failing
The premise is interesting and it could have been decent if it wasn't emotionally flat, borderline badly acted and otherwise uninventive.
They seemed to be attempting an 80's teen movie vibe but it failed on every front. Langford's performance felt forced and unnatural. She was trying to be a quirky, carefree teenager but her entire performance felt contrived.
Piper Perabo and Rob Huebel playing Mara's parents were trying for some kind of cool parent vibe which floundered into emotionless, unfunny supporting roles.
The standout was Charlie Plumber. When he was on screen there was some genuinely good acting and you could relax. If the rest of the movie was brought up to his level it would have been much better.
The soundtrack was okay, although a little too on the nose.
I found myself feeling repeatedly bored and struggling to pay attention. It also bugged me how Mara was always flawlessly made up, even when she was apparently too depressed to move or blackout drunk.
I hoped everyone (or I) would spontaneously combust so the movie would finally come to an end.
Wolf Creek (2005)
Sick, twisted and disturbing. I loved it.
It's amazing that somebody could complain about this film so much! I watched Wolf Creek knowing nothing about it, apart from being told that the first 50 minutes could be slow and not much happens. This prepared me so I watched the first 50 minutes with patience as it established the characters and took you with them on their journey. Giving nothing away, two English women characters and one Australian boy go on a trip when their car breaks down and they get help from a friendly Australian guy. They stay the night. From the moment the first girl wakes up, the horror begins and your heart will be hammering in fear and disgust. The sounds and overall realism of what happens makes you feel as if it is happening to you and by the end of the film, you should feel pretty disgusted. Some parts sound as if they are a cliché but the film seems so real it's as if you are watching a documentary of these sick events. I've read a few reviews that say they didn't like the film because they thought it was too sick. It's the scariest, and most original horror of recent years that deserves to go down as a classic. If you watch the film with an empty mind, only remembering to be patient in the first half because the second half is worth it, then you should love it.
