Foxcatcher (2014)
Does water triumph over blood my brother?
The story of Mark Shultz and his relationship with John E. Du Pont is dark, layered and complex. As I said the film is very deeply focused on the relationship between these two men and how they developed this relationship which begins with Mark (Tatum) trying to escape his brother Dave's (Ruffalo) shadow. John (Carell) on the other hand wishes to prove himself as independent and capable in the eyes of his mother and sees wrestling as the way to do it. The two find solace in each other and attempt to grow and develop into stronger men and good friends. The story takes a turn for the worse when Du Pont's mother shows disapproval in John's wrestling team and skills. Upon hearing this, seeking a chance for approval from his mother John betrays Marks friendship and trust bringing Dave in believing he will validate team Foxcatcher in the eyes of his mother all the while taking away Mark's opportunity to escape from his brother's shadow. Upon Dave's arrival Mark grows closer to his brother once more having felt betrayed by John. This Perplexes John who does not understand how he could return to someone he resented so much and tries desperately to acquire his friendship again. This is very much a story of loyalty and betrayal and puts these themes at the heart of its story and delivers it perfectly depicting their relationship in a realistic and deep way. Bennet Miller's direction is felt in every shot and face twitch of this movie creating a dark eerie setting for what is ultimately a tragic tale. This pacing may be very slow for some but it is deliberate and it's in place to develop and destroy this relationship in a provoking way. I would not recommend the film for all popcorn chewing audiences but for those who seek a dark and brutal character driven tale this is an excellent film to watch.
